It's because one fine summer afternoon the bytes wanted to become super awesome. Ya know how bytes are, they dig Transformers. So the bytes wanted to gang up and become super awesome LIKE the Transformer. But they coco for cocopuffs over Megatron and absolutely hate Optimus Prime. Onward they went by the millions to take down Optimus Prime so they could further brown their noses for Megatron. Once there gang of one million bytes took down the mighty Optimus Prime they gallivanted their success around until the news had reached Megatron himself. He rewarded the million bytes by giving them their own Transformer name; part of his own name: Megabyte.
