It's pretty simple. You need another's voice to guide you. Even if you have to record your own voice and then play it back to yourself. It won't work if all you're doing is letting your thoughts drift with nothing for your subconscious mind to focus on.

Create a script, write it up, record your voice in a soft, gentle tone and then try doing the trance thing again but this time play the recording.
