So I saw there was a MGS collection on Playstation Now while checking the PS Store on my PS4 (that's a lot of playstation in one sentence), and I was wondering how worth it is to play all of the Metal Gear Solid games. I've never really been able to play any of them, and I've only ever seen all of Metal Gear Rising, but if I had the chance, would any of you say I should play them given the chance? And are there any that aren't part of the main story, or should they all be played to understand the story

If you want to play the games in-universe chronological order the line up goes as such:

    MGS3 -> Peace Walker -> MGS5:GZ -> MGS5: PP (not released yet) -> Metal Gear -> Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake -> MGS -> MGS2 -> MGS4 -> MGRR

To my knowledge the only Metal Gear games that are considered non-canon are Portable Ops, Snake's Revenge, the Ac!d series, and Ghost Babel.

Pretty much what Libre's been saying: play them in release order rather than chronological. The story just flows better that way (which is to say, in a somewhat bizarre way.)

Metal Gear Solid HD Collection has MGS2, MGS3, and Peace Walker. It's available on PS3, Xbox 360, and Vita (I think the Vita one is missing Peace Walker though.)
Metal Gear Solid 1 is available on the Playstation Network store, usually for $10. I recommend this version above the Gamecube remake, The Twin Snakes, and apparently so does Kojima.
Metal Gear Solid 4 is exclusive to the Playstation 3.
Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops is I believe only on the PSP. Same with the AC!D games (which are a separate continuation.)
Metal Gear Solid Ghost Babel is only on the Gameboy Color, and takes place in an alternate timeline.
Metal Gear Rising is on the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC
Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes is available on PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and soon PC. The Phantom Pain will be on the same systems.
Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake are originally NES titles that you'll best find in The Legacy Collection that I'll describe below.

There are also a few digital graphic novels, the database on the PS3, and a booklet.

All of the Kojima-directed games released before Metal Gear Rising (which I underlined) EXCEPT GHOST BABEL are available as parts of Metal Gear Solid: The Legacy Collection, which is exclusive to the Playstation 3.

Agree with this a lot. It's important that you see Raiden the way he was intended to be initially seen before he turns into the cyborg ninja we're all familiar with.

I've been meaning to get into MGS myself as well. What exactly are the differences between the PS and Gamecube versions? I know Twin Snakes is a remake by Silicone Knights, I just don't really understand the changes that were made, but I heard it's a solid game in and of itself.

I finished them all this year and new to the series. I played in order by story. I don't regret it. All the games are amazing!
2, 4 and rising are my favs.

The GC version has better graphics, the same voice actors as the rest of the series, and absolutely more ridiculous cutscenes ( ). It also plays like MGS2 with the environments of MGS1, so you're more capable. Not only that, you have a full health bar from the start of the game instead of needing to beat bosses to expand your health.

It's hard to say which version Koji finds canon- cutscenes from both games appear in flashbacks in MGS4, and the GC version has the same same voice actors as MGS4's returning characters. However, MGS1 is alluded to more than Twin Snakes.

Short answer? Play both. Play MGS1 on easy/normal, then play Twin Snakes on hard. You'll get both experiences and can decide for yourself.

Well for one, Twin Snakes is said to be much easier than the original, two the aiming are definitely different, (I think twin snakes have first person view), three in Twin Snakes you can ACTUALLY see the characters face, four much better graphics, five Twin Snakes cutscenes have more feel into it, and also it's action is more overdone. I'd prefer Twin Snakes just cause some parts are a pain in the ass to beat, but other than that there's no other significant difference.

I strongly prefer the original Metal Gear Solid 1, personally. While most of the voice actors were the same between games, there was one change that I really disliked: Gray Fox's voice actor, who was Greg Eagles in the original, and was replaced by Rob Paulsen. Also, I kinda prefer not being able to aim down my sights with every weapon, as the game becomes far too easy with that. The over-the-top cutscenes are too over-the-top if you ask me. Over all, I think Metal Gear Solid 1 is the better game than The Twin Snakes.

As Atlas puts it, it'd be best to try both and see what you like.

I disagree with this. They may have the better graphics, but the cutscenes are far better acted and directed (in my opinion) in the original version of the game.
