You boot into the HEN, then run a program that loads CFW into the RAM for the session. For some unknown reason, the developers insist on storing the CFW files in the Flash, even though there's no real reason to as far as I can tell. The flash is where the bootable firmware is stored, although other stuff can also be stored in there, provided the firmware is left alone.

What do you mean? Like turning it into a full blown CFW, or something else? If the former, I will love you forever. (Maybe homo)

HEN doesn't give write access to flash. A CFW for those models won't come from it.

I know that. It's why I'm planning to sell my 3000 as soon as possible. But couldn't a CFW of that firmware (installable from a different CFW of course) come from it if someone is willing to put the time and effort into making it "flash ready" as I call it?

I thought it gave write-access, but couldn't get past the pre-IPL, meaning any alteration to the firmware would result in a brick?

Oh, I swore this was about PS3 (which HEN for it doesn't allow custom firmware to write to flash). Got it and PSP mixed up for a sec.
Do you have experience in advanced programming/hacking? If not, I wouldn't recommend working with you PSP in anyway that intends to someway edit your flash. Especially with these non-pandora models. I don't know how HEN for PSP works though, if it just edit security routines in RAM, then your good.

Editing the Flash is a bad idea for the non-pandora models, but for my PSP 1000, I can quite happily delete everything in Flash0, and have it restored within ten minutes. The only dangerous thing is playing with the NAND. I'm not entirely sure what that does.

i have a psp 1001 so i have no problem plus i back everything up
and NAND is just a type of flash memory

usually holds firmware (xbox 360 for instance)
you need access to the nand to flash certain xbox 360 models

Could you explain the NAND keys, that sort of thing? I remember reading that if you screw with them, you can break your PSP beyond repair.

    well thats a tough one
what the nand itself is a storage device located in most gaming systems
which has an image of all of the major files, ID keys and other important thing for a psp to run
if you get a bricked psp and restore it through the nand it will be identical to what is was when it was last updated
ex: 5.50 gen d3 in my case

but nand restoring is dangerous because its a physical restoration and could end up breaking so your psp wont be bricked its just dead
its worse than a brick essentually

So what's the difference between restoring the entire NAND, and restoring the Flash?

in basic terms you screw up the nand -no more psp
you screw up the flash and you have a chance to recover

It's been released for ages for the 1000 and some 2000s. There's a HEN for certain firmwares of 2000s and 3000s. What sort do you have?

Get a secondhand PSP 1000. Don't get one from the store, otherwise you can't get CFW.
