If I recall, something about our info not being too secure was posted wayyy before this happened. Just goes to show you how much Sony screwed up.

I'm not saying that this happened because of Sony, but the event itself shows how much disregard Sony has for our info. If they were so concerned about the Geohotz incident, then they should have predicted some form of backlash, and even if not, they should have worked on the security of the customer first, and then on their product.

Firmware updates are nice and what not to prevent the console from being hacked, but now they've got the disappointed costumers to contend with.

It only does everything. Including being hacked.

I'm pretty sure whoever caused Sony to shut down wants nothing to do with our credit information. That wasn't their intention. All they wanted was for PSN to stop working and it did. Sure, some of our info is out there, but none of it is going to be stolen. I used fake information so this doesn't really bother me.

This is what claimed to be the chat of the hackers in IRC (told ya, best things always happen in IRC!). Keep in the back of your mind that it might not be as true as they claim to be, without making assumptions though.

And of course, the suing has begun.

It's kind of sad that Sony thinks they're so amazing they don't even have to encrypt credit card numbers.

Well it's not like Sony's encryption is any good anyway. I mean Geohot and Fail0verflow found out the root key. That is not easy.

They found the root key because of an overflow, not an encryption error. And regardless, if you're handling someone's credit card numbers, you encrypt that ****, it doesn't matter how good you think your security is.

I'm saying if someone can hack that then they could find a way to decrypt them
and yeah that is plain stupid not to.

Yeah, any system has the potential to be beaten by a hack. That's not to imply that attempting to improve security is a bad idea, because even if it can be beaten in theory, it stops a lot more people than it would otherwise.

It's quite telling that it's Sony, the ones who didn't encrypt the information, which had the information stolen. I wonder why it didn't happen to all those other companies which encrypt securely.

If sony had at least tried to encrypt the numbers they probably wouldn't be sued right now.

I'd also like to point out that it's been possible to grab people's credit cards like this for a LONG time and Sony never did anything about it. Only now is something actually happening.

This could have happened to any one of the companies, but since it's happened to one company everyone else should be all "OH FFFFF-" and start beefing up security. To be honest though, I'm not surprised it's happened considering how half of these types of companies are all like "Our products and networks are hack-proof" then bam, it gets hacked. Hopefully, this will only mean future security increases for all networks of this kind, or ignorance from Sony and whoever else falls under the same category and a lot more hacks and unhappy people.

Could it? I don't know much about Nintendo's and Microsoft's security, but I haven't heard of them storing passwords unencrypted. Hacking fiascos always seem to be Sony's domain.

Sure, any company could have been targeted, but Sony made themselves a very juicy target by wrapping up the passwords as plain text, instead of with encryption. It's no coincidence that the hackers target the one company that's had a lot of coverage about a lack of safety with personal data.

Yeah in all honesty 4chan would never be able to pull anything of this magnitude off. They (And geohot) are just a scapegoat for these hackers at this point

4chan's a bunch of anonymous guys. It's possible that one of them had experience hacking.

Yeah, it's more likely that it's professional hackers. We'll find out in the aftermath of this scandal, when we see what the personal info is used for.

Well I kinda expected this to happen after PSN had been down for 4 days in a row, oh well. I hope I didn't save my credit card info, I don't think I did but still this is rather exciting. Hurry and build PSN up again Sony, I don't care about losing all my money as long as I can play nothing online! I wonder who did it though, must have been some pretty skilled hackers.
