It plays games fine, but when it comes to movies it doesn't read the discs at all. What happens is that the disc just jerks back and forth, but never fully spins, but if it does spin its a very slow spin. The discs are fine, it doesn't have to do with the disc. Is it just a problem with the laser? does anybody know how to fix it, or does anybody have any theories on something I can try to fix it?
To be honest, while they can play DVDs, they're not meant for that. With DVDs, PS2s are constantly reading the discs, wearing out the laser, whereas with PS2 games, it reads the information, stores it somewhere, and stops reading the discs -- something like that.
It could be the laser. 1. Turn on diagnostic in console 2. Clean the lens with rubbing alcohol (Gently with a Q-tip) 3. Adjust the potentiometer under the laser by a hair (Not recommended) Or 4. By a new laser
and then go through the trouble of re-modding it? no thanks. I'll buy a blu ray player instead. I want one for upstairs anyway.
If I bought a ps2 I would get rid of this one, meaning I would have to re-mod the new one in order to play imports. I would have to buy a slim, as I only have the things needed to mod slims, and I haven't seen a slim for less than $80, and even if I could find a cheap one I would still have to go through the trouble of modding it. I could buy a fat ps2, but I would have to buy the materials to play imports for that, and I'm not sure how much that would cost but it would be to much trouble, and probably more than I'm willing to pay. Also, there's no guarantee that the one I would buy would be in better condition than mine is is. It wouldn't make sense for me to buy another ps2 just to play movies, since I could buy a blu ray player for roughly the same price, and then be able to watch blu rays upstairs. So, I'll buy a blu ray player whenever I get to it, and deal with not being able to watch movies for now.
