    I believe it was supposed to be because they were a different sect of them, possibly living slightly more on instinct, whereas the originals were implied to be assassins of sorts, though it has been a while.
    A more logical explanation though would be that they simply needed the numbers, especially once they discovered the temporal disturbance.
