They don't need to have balance. The Starter type triangle is good enough. In Gen II, the starers were pure fire, water and grass all the way from the beginning to the end of the evolution That was also what made the rival so much more of a challenge and gave you a lot better sense of accomplishment once you finally beat him. Empoleon is a mess though. Weak to ground and electric (electric is fine) but now you have a starter who is neutral to fire and grass as well as strong to most elements because of the steel addition which is strong to a majority of elements.. Infernape did not become neutral to water and grass, nor did Torterra get a neutral resistance to fire. Yes, Empoleon has decent stats, but he is nothing special. Most people have fighting or ground attacks which wipe it out in one to two shots.

I would much prefer to have the net gen just be pure again. Fire, water and grass, back to the way it should be. They won't do that however. To much balance for them. The challenge is to get to people to the franchise, and if you make something Nintenhard, they won't come to it. That is what the ill balance did, but it made the game a lot more rewarding.

Which is why they clearly attempted to balance them in Gen IV... even if they failed. That said, Gen II wouldn't have benefited from balanced starters simply because your rival was the game's main antagonist. In Gen I, he was the final boss. In Gen III, he started with a Psychic type, in Black/White, you had two rivals and, ironically, the one with the better team was the one with the starter that yours had the advantage over and in Black/White 2, your rival really doesn't play too big a role.

The rival is clearly not a good reason to have single type starters.

Again, the balance was clearly an oversight on Game Freak's part. They clearly attempted to keep the balance by giving Torterra Ground which beat FIre, Infernape Fighting, which beat Steel and relying on Water beating Torterra's Ground. Or at least, that's the only way I can see how they expected it to work. However, this is only an issue with the starters themselves. As a whole, Empoleon is a fine Pokemon.

If you're going to quote Ground and Fighting as problems with Empoleon, well, that's the Steel type. Every Steel type is weak to Ground (save the Magnezone family) and Fighting (even Lucario, which is Fighting type itself).

And if you're really going to talk about balance problems, Infernape's really the one that hurts the balance the most due to the fact that while Torterra and Empoleon were good tanks (with Torterra more focused on physical and Empoleon more focused on Special), Infernape was a hell of a lightning bruiser. You get down to it, Infernape just had a blatant advantage over Torterra and Empoleon.

Also, none of the starters are considered anything special. They're all slightly above average and are meant to be good center pieces for your team. The only two starters that anyone has taken seriously in the metagame are Blaziken and Swampert because of their typings. Blaziken was quick with good Attack and Fighting moves and good Special Attack and Fire moves. It was just an all around good Pokemon with a unique typing and had potential as a sweeper. Swampert, on the other hand, remains the best Water/Ground Pokemon in the game.

Yeah, the way it should be... which is why exactly one generation had it that way.

    Gen I:
    Venusaur: Grass/Poison
    Charizard: Fire/Flying
    Blastoise: Water

    Gen II:
    Meganium: Grass
    Typhlosion: Fire
    Feraligatr: Water

    Gen III:
    Sceptile: Grass
    Blaziken: Fire/Fighting
    Swampert: Water/Ground

    Gen IV:
    Torterra: Grass/Ground
    Infernape: Fire/Fighting
    Empoleon: Water/Steel

    Gen V:
    Serperior: Grass
    Emboar: Fire/Fighting
    Samurott: Water

You can't really argue tradition when the tradition you're arguing in favor of isn't tradition in the first place.

LOL I actually thought that the Y and X pokemons were reversed! As I can see a Y in that stag but almost didn't see a X on it.

Seriously though, guys--do you think that Nintendo is running out of names for their Pokemon games? cx The legendaries look cool and all but I don't know about the game titles...

The names usually have something BIG to do with the plot (starting with Black and White). X and Y could likely be something that has to do with genetics, kind of like how Black and White had to do with Ideals and Truths.

That's a pretty nice way of putting it... o.o I haven't ever thought of Nintendo using generics in Pokemon before...

They DID make Mewtwo the Genetic Pokemon, so it wasn't too big of a shock that this is the "Genetic Generation".

Yeah, it's likely to do with the X/Y pairings of chromosomes, so genetics has a high chance of being prominent in the plot. Couldn't imagine what it could possibly be though. I want to say LEGENDARIES FUSE but that was already done with Kyurem.

Tho maybe Pokemon gender will have a bigger role? Or the bad guy team is genetically enhancing 'mons to be ridiculous (like Red's Eevee from the Pokemon Adventures manga). Whatever it is, definitely looking forward to it.

Vee was amazing. I'd really love to see something like that done (though I hope the poor Pokémon is rescued afterwards ; ; ). Could it maybe have something to do with Xerneas and Yveltall being Genetically enginereed/enhanced?

I think that'd be a pretty cool idea behind the legendary pokemon, because they do look somewhat different. I mean, we've seen plenty of different pokemon, but I wonder what could normally cause a pokemon's eye to be a X, or a flying type that becomes....well, I don't know, I'm just taking random guesses here

It's a wild guess, but Bulbapedia had it down as "The Genetic Generation" on the first day, so it likely has something to do with this. I'd also think Legendary Z is the same, because it'd be strange if it wasn't.

They could be, but it's just a guess.

Then if they are, then the games won't be as fun if the Pokemon are just mixed DNA. ._.

Okay, so I had a thought come to me. The DS and below lacked a feature that the 3DS can offer. None of them had it because Nintendo didn't give it a chance until recently. But now that they have started doing this with the 3DS for many games, DLC may in fact be a part of this. Think about the possible ideas:

-New Pokemon can come to the system. And I mean NEW pokemon. Ones that are not originally. The faults is breeding and spreading the pokemon through trade.
-A release of certain regions. Some people, like me, wanted remakes of gen III Ruby and Sapphire. What if they release a DLC that allows you to spend $20 and go to the Hoenn region. I doubt it but its a possibility.
-Exclusive areas. Get access to areas to catch maybe past Legendaries. Want Darkrai or something? Take a trip to a new city which is purely based on him. It is more likely then the region idea.
-Items. Another thing that you could buy for benefits in battles.

On another note for speculation, StreetPass is a huge feature they use for the 3DS. Could we maybe see a feature from Ruby and Sapphire return? Talking about Secret Bases. Pass someone and gain access to their base and maybe have an option to set your Pokemon to allow people to fight them. It would be a nice addition.

More speculation, in the past, we have always had a similar feature about the antagonists that all of them share. All of them were male. Could we perhaps have a female antagonist for once? Who knows. Just pondering.

Now a thought on theme. I was doing some research on X and Y in meaning. X can mean a form of life as Y can mean a form of death. Could the main two Legendaires be of Life and Death. I will use Xe and Yv for the names for I still struggle with them. Xe stands in a forest which can be seen as a area for life to grow and expand. It stands on the Earth, grounded to the world. Yv however is in the sky. The final resting place for life is the heavens and hell. Its fire-like appearance can demonstrate hell while its ability to fly to the sky could represent heavens. These would be the locations of the dead. So I take it that X and Y can stand for Life and Death. The games have been seen to grow much deeper with story as in Black and White it was based off Truth and Ideals. Before then it was Time and Space, or Land and Sea involving climate. Earlier on it was Legend and Myth, or science for the future.

My first thought when heard Pokemon X and Y was chromossomes , but then It felt a bit ridiculous, as though they have had a "female game" as cristal was purple because it was the first game were you coud play as a girl I doubt it will have a female game intirely as well as a boy game... right after I thought about space coordinates (X, Y, Z) and made a lot more sense as it is as 3Ds game..
If gamefreeks want it to mantain some genetics on the topic they could make the first part Pokemon X and Y, and the second Pokemon Z and W , as they are the birds/lizards sexual chromossomes, yet it would lose the 3D reference that fits the handled.

And so are Porygon (and Porygon 2 and Porygon Z by extension), Magnemite (and Magneton and Magnezone by extension), Klink (and Klang and Klinklang by extension) and Genesect.

I think adding stuff about chromosomes in a pokémon game would be kind of extreme. Remember it is aimed at a younger audience. Yea I know, the average pokémon player is a lot older than what Gamefreak where anticipating, but it is still aimed at children. The names are probably coming from the 3D spectrum,(X,Y,Z) since the game is in 3D. I think about the Psychic, fighting and dark dual typing for the starters would erase some of the fun from the game. Your rival is supposed to be a hard trainer(because he cheats and picks after you), adding a dual type that subtracts from the rock-paper-scissors would ruin that element. I do think however that your rival is slowly becoming more of a main character instead of the bane of your childhood. Burgh from Black & White 2 was by far the worst rival, you only battled him twice in the entire game, and it is the latest installment, so I think that your rival is not going to be much of a problem anymore. Surprising as it may seem, I kind of miss your rival being a ******bag...
