This makes me remember that April Fool's joke that nintendo did about the phone app where you can catch pokemon. Looks like someone decided to make it a real thing. If I traveled a little more I would be able to get more out of this, but I don't, so I wonder if I would use it

I just really hope they don't end up doing too many micro transactions.

It's already been noted that there will be in-app purchases

Well I mean, it would be an okay idea if it was for legendary/event Pokemon, seeing as to how not everyone can afford to just travel to special places for them.

Watch as famous spots around the world get crowded to the brim with people for 3 minutes just because of this app.

I am assuming its either for legendary/ rare/ mythical Pokemon or its for things like better Balls to catch Pokemon with. Say like X number of Ultra Balls for X number of actual dollars. Perhaps it would also be used for items if this ends up being the new spot for Pokemon competitive. The VGC already happened this year but I won't doubt if they have something set up using this app for the next years Pokemon championships in San Francisco. Hell, they'll probably make that location the place to get something unique like Surfing Pikachu.

Regardless, I'm getting this app. This looks like a huge step closer to actually owning a Pokemon. Its not the virtual reality I want or those assumed watches that will be made in the next few decades that will summon a virtual pet, but its pretty close. Plus, I feel this will make the Pokemon community as a whole a lot bigger and hopefully a lot more friendly. This sort of thing has been done in the past with other mobile real world application games where groups gather up in certain locations to interact with one another in a common interest. I think it can only be positive.

Honestly, with this thing being made, I can feel that we are getting closer and closer to the Yu-Gi-Oh situation where Dual Disks and stuff might not be too Farfech'd. Its a small step, but in time, I can see people with Pokedex like things simulating actual real world Pokemon Battles. Its a beautiful dream, but a dream nonetheless.

It's funny, because we can do a slight version of virtual holograms, but not nearly anything like in Yugioh, but if we could manage something like that, I'm sure people will be playing Yugioh all over and having pokemon battles wherever they get the chance.

Man, now I'm daydreaming about that epicness. I want it to be real now

So just to make sure, you can't transfer Pokemon you get from this into the Nintendo games, right? All I see are plans for future titles.

Not to existing titles, I don't think. They do want it to be compatible with future titles, though, from what I understand.

i think people are romanticizing the potential. real life pokemon fantasy is fine and all but any tiny misstep in the execution could destroy that.

why can you catch wild charizards?

i won't take part in this. i don't want to catch pokemon irl i want to catch pokemon in fictional places like Hoenn, Sinnoh, etc.
when i play pokemon i want to know i'm getting a game full of limitless content in a wonderfully crafted setting. it's an immersive experience and trying to bring that experience as close to the individual as possible is fine, but it's being done through a way that doesn't appeal to me. i like the real games too much.

Following a cancelled GDC appearance and a surprise SXSW appearance, new screenshots and details on the game have been released!
    • Players will have Trainer levels; as your level increases, you can find rarer and stronger items and Pokémon.
    • Real-life monuments and landmarks will be turned into PokéStops, locations where you can find not only items, but also Pokémon eggs! These eggs will incubate and hatch as you walk.
    • Catching enough of the same Pokémon will allow you to evolve one of them.
    • Upon reaching a certain point in the game, players will be asked to join one of three teams. As a team member, you'll have the ability to assign Pokémon you've caught to empty Gym locations, or to places where other team members have Pokémon assigned.
    • Gyms, like PokéStops, can be found at varying real-life locations. Team members can place a single Pokémon each to an individual Gym, so teams must work together to build strong defenses. If a Gym is claimed by another team, you can take them on with your Pokémon to claim control for your team.
    • Many different challenges will be available through the game, and completing them will unlock achievement medals for your profile.
    • If you don't like the AR backgrounds in the game that use the phone camera, you can switch over to pre-rendered backgrounds.

I'm so ready for this game. Especially how the whole gym thing works with the differnt teams and everything. This will probably drain phone battery life fast though.

The one thing I'm going to have an issue with is having to catch multiples of the same pokemon just to evolve it. I rarely go to any places outside of work and home, so it'll be interesting to see what I can contribute. Maybe if I take a trip to downtown houston i'll find some special spots and get eggs.

This is going to kill my phone storage and battery though

Yeah, there isn't a lot of stuff where I live so I doubt I will get very many pokemon unless I go to downtown Houston, but going there makes me sad cause it's so crowded.

The only reason I go close to downtown is when I have to visit UH Main Campus, but that might actually be fine once this app comes up and I can do something with it.
