I really need help now. My laptop has stopped working. I'm writing this on my dad's computer because it's broken. I was watching a video on youtube and I heard a rattling sound from insode the computer. Then it bsoded. Now it won't start up, I get a screen saying "drive not found" or something like that. I took out the hard-drive and that's where the rattling was coming from. I was going to open it up because I think that maybe a power cable has fallen out or something. The model of computer is A Dell Latitude D600 series laptop. I really need it fixed rather than a new one because everything is on there. all of my music, photos, scores, art, all my programs, everything. I made back ups on the system but if the system on't start up then they are useless. Help me please.

Maybe it is a cable :/

If not then your computer must have crashed. Did you try recovery disk? If not then you might have to reboot your entire computer from the beginning.

I thought it was a coble but it's getting to the cable, I am pretty sure it's in the hard drive but I really don't want to break it more by fiddleing around in there.

I don't think Hard Drives have any internal cables. Either a cable popped out OR your hard drive is actually fried. I hate to tell you, but It might be the hard drive is fried. A hard drive consists of two Magnetic plates that are balanced. Rattling may have been the plates being put out of alignment.

could a magnet have distupted that alignment and if so can that be fixed. I think I was playing with a magnet at the time and it slipped out of my hand. That was at around the time it happened.

A magnet could have done it if I remember correctly. Yeah Magnets should stay far from computers. Its just a good thing to follow lol. I doubt it can be fixed though. I would have someone from a professional standpoint look at it though.

Your best bet would be to replace the hard drive.

Yes. Unfortunately, when a hard drive is fried, everything is gone. Getting a new one means starting from scratch.

Before you replace it though, have a pro look at it. It may be possible to salvage some of the data.

Try having a professional look at it, and don't do anything else by yourslef, because you might make it impossible to fix.

To me, it seems like you heard the death rattle that is common when a hard drive is dead.

You will want to call Dell since it is a computer from them and if you have a warranty, they can replace the hard drive. As for getting information off the old one, you can ask and see if they can save anything from that and transfer it to a new hd.

If you have no warranty or way of getting it to Dell, my suggestion to you is to buy a new hard drive and then take the old one and put it in the freezer for around 6 hours or more. Take it out and then try using it as a slave drive to take off information from. However, this may not work. If it does not work, you are rather screwed and will have lost all of the old data.
