Right but you can't recommend it.

Also, that defense is weak. It's not technically written anywhere that it lets you emulate because you didn't make your own backups.

Unless he has a means to rip his own BIOS files himself, then there would be some level of "illegal download" happening even if he ripped games straight from the discs themselves.

Have you considered opening up your old PS2s and having a look inside to see where the problem is? Most issues with consoles often are just simple dust problems. If its something else entirely you could buy a PS2 for parts and try to fix it yourself with online guides. If you've gone through so many before, it must be worth a shot right?
EDIT: Of course, this is under the assumption you still have your old consoles laying around somewhere

I've cleaned the lenses multiple times with rubbing alcohol, which actually did the trick the first time and it lasted for about a year. I've also used the blowing side of our old vacuum cleaner (it still works, we just bought a better one) to blow dust out, though we've never actually taken it apart.

A PS3, though, will be better in the long run.

I have four PS2s, two phats and two slims, two of each I have modded with three of them being used when I got them. They still run perfectly to this day (I broke the reset button off one lol). I say get another PS2, a moddable slim if possible, but if you hadn't already decided I would have also said "get the PS3". If your intent is to play your PS2/1 discs on it though, you can't on the newer models (the phat has overheating issues and can't be bought new for cheap anymore).

As for the PS2 issue, you probably just have to reseat it or check the wires on the inside. If not, a replacement piece is like $12 and easy to fix. :)

I have a fat PS2 that my uncle got shortly after release that still works perfectly. Its modded and all. Dunno if I'm an outlier and PS2s arent supposed to last that long, but yeah. If you want a backwards compatible PS3, you'll need to get an original 60GB fat PS3. These are expensive, kinda hard to find and old as heck. Don't buy one. If you wanna play PS2 games on a PS3, buy any PS3 on 3.55 firmware (I can help you find one), mod it, install a cobra CFW and you can play PS2 ISOs right off the HDD. Its not illegal as long you own a legit copy of the game, you can even rip your own ISOs if you want.

If you wanna go down the PS2 route though, get a used fat off amazon or ebay for like $50. Even if they only last you 2 years (which sounds weird to me, I've only ever had 2 PS2s, a fat and a slim, and both still work perfect) thats still not bad.

Definitely going the PS3 route, mostly because I really want the Kingdom Hearts remixes, but also to get more updated with the times, yo. I already have a plan in place, though you may have missed that chat on Discord, Kyle.

I'll be getting the PS3 I linked to earlier in this thread that's 500 GB and reasonably priced. It's not officially backward compatible with PS2 games—though some games work, and there is a list on Wikipedia of which games those are—but since all versions of the PS3 are backward compatible with PS games—just not PS2 games for whatever reason—and since the PS2 I'm using now works with PS2 games (it just doesn't work with PS games since the CD laser is busted), I'll be using the PS3 for PS3 and PS games while I keep using the PS2 for PS2 games.

No PS3s except the 60GB are backwards compatible with PS2 discs. The PSN Store has some PS2 games available for download, but only a select few. Even if the games you want are available, you'll have to pay for them again. It also has some PS1 games available for download, but nowhere near all of them.

We had to explain to him how memory cards wouldn't work. But he is right on PS1 games being BC on every PS3 (not sure if you know, it was just worded like you didn't)

Do you mean digitally BC or physically BC?

Really? Was there a hardware or software update some time ago or something? I can't do that on my new PS3 model at all. The drive should make it impossible alone.

With the slim model of the PS4 coming out really soon ($299 on launch, will prob be $250 during Black Friday/Cyber Monday) I think either a PS3 or a PS4 are good choices atm; especially since they'll prob add more PS2 games to the PS4 lineup in time.

If you do want the HD remakes for KH though, I'd say go for a PS3. It has a good catalogue of stuff to choose from, and there are still games getting released for it (e.g. Persona 5). The remakes could probably come to PS4, but I don't think they'd announce that for a while out.
