So I have a few options regarding my PlayStation 2 dilemma since I can't find any refurbished ones:
    • Just break down and buy a brand new one and deal with it going out in two years, at least that's what I predict based on past experience with brand new ones, compared to four years with the one refurbished one. Although my previous one we bought that I'm now using as my "current" is still technically working longer than two years, just not with PlayStation games.
    • Buy a separate PlayStation just to play PlayStation games
    • Drop my dead PlayStation 2 off at GameStop, if possible, and have them send it to Sony for another refurbishing.
    • Fix the CD laser on my previous PlayStation 2, which is now the one I'm using (which technically makes it my current now), so it can play PlayStation games.

Buy a new one. Shell out large sums of money.

    I don't think Sony refurbishes PS2's anymore.

Just live the dream and buy a TEST PS2

Just buy a new one, if you can find one that is. Still, I'm surprised you're having to get a new one. I've been using the same one I've had ever since we got ours about...10, 11 years ago?

I just emulate. But there is the issue of if can your computer handle it, and a few games have some jankyness to it.

Well, forget getting a new one. For the slim PS2s, the price range is between $393.00 and $553.92, not including shipping and tax, and while I don't want to get a fat one since @Patman mentioned they're hard to clean, they range between $292.69 and $849.99, not including shipping and tax. No way am I paying that much as they weren't even that much when they first came out. Just a bunch of scam artists.

Same goes for the PlayStation, but I'd be more willing to get a used one there:

That takes the first option off the table, which leaves me with the other three options, unless what Atlas says below is true, which then takes the third option off the table and leaves me with two options. And very likely, the second option will also be taken off the table, leaving me with only the fourth option. I refuse to get a used PS2, unless it's been refurbished, which I can't find!

Ugh! This is a nightmare! It wasn't this difficult to get a PS2 four years ago when I got my refurbished one and the times before that.

    Test PS2?

My computer would be fine with 1,000 GB of hard drive space and eight GB of RAM, but it's much more difficult to find the games for the emulators.

If you have the disks and a DVD reader you can rip them yourself.

Likely can't discuss much more than this, so don't want to get too much into it, but that's interesting. If by DVD reader, you just mean the DVD ROM drive in the computer, then yes, I have it.

If a brand new one from Sony goes out after two years, a used one would have an even shorter lifespan, unless it's been refurbished, but I can't find any of those.

Last stance I heard is that emulation is fine, pirating is not. But best not to dance too much with that line I guess. And yes, I was just talking about the DVD-ROM drive.

I bought a used one, and it's lasted a good five years thus far (and still going strong). It's possible that you just got a bad one last time.

I'm actually now considering a PlayStation 3, though it wouldn't be until my birthday, and it would be a birthday and Christmas present combined from my mom. I found a new one for $215.50, and that's much more reasonable for a PlayStation 3, but not a PlayStation. I won't be fully up-to-date, but PlayStation 4s are still too expensive. However, I won't be quite so outdated, either, and I could get games like the Kingdom Hearts remixes, right?

It'd certainly make @Roxam happy since he was always nagging me. ;) Speaking of which, Roxam, this seems to your expertise area, and I want to see if this would be a good choice. Are PlayStation 3s still fairly supported and do they generally last longer than brand new PlayStation 2s, even brand new ones? Also, I'm not sure how to tell if a PlayStation 3 is backward compatible with PlayStation 2 and PlayStation games.

So you're telling me that the five or six brand news ones I've gotten that only lasted me about two years, with the exception of one that only lasted a little over a year, were all bad? LOL!

That doesn't include the first one my dad got me, which was the fat one, and it actually lasted quite a good while, or the last one I got, which was refurbished.

I've added a poll to this, which will be open until my birthday on November 8. This poll will close on November 7 at 11:59 PM (PST). I'll adjust the poll later as you can't choose the close time, only the date. The time comes from whenever you make or edit the poll.

Isn' t it legal if he actually bought and still owns the games ? Not that I would expect a cop to knock on his door for that anytime soon.

Honestly, PS3 or emulation (or both if your PC can handle emulation). PS3 games are pretty cheap now so you can get entire series for a small amount.
