To be fair, the ending of SotC is horrifying, if you think about it. You guys know what I'm talking about.

The final act of SotC is one of the saddest endings ever when you get down to it, really.

I once had someone tell me how SotC had an extremely happy endings, since "everyone survived". I was baffled by his inability to actually think about the implications of the ending.

HOW IS IT HAPPY. It's one of the most tragic things ever made.
Since the beginning of the game you're told that the price you pay for trying to resurrect your loved one will be extremely heavy.
When you're getting to the final fight, Agro falls off a cliff and you think he's dead, and you're left completely alone against the most ominous boss ever. Furthermore, during the fight you know that something is wrong, that what you're doing is not right. This is amplified by all the colossi you killed off during the game.
Once you defeat the boss, Dormin (the entity) possesses you, you get attacked by an Elite Guard, you turn into a monster, and on top of it all Mono still wasn't resurrected. It's only after that the protagonist gets sucked into the vortex thing (While still trying to reach out for Mono, and then gets turned into a horned baby) that a few seconds later we see that Agro returns and Mono gets revived. AND HE WON'T EVEN KNOW ANY OF THIS.

    Yeah, pretty ****ing happy ending.

Moral of the story? Don't trust demon entity thingies

In my case, I always liked Ico more. There was just something about the whole Ico and Yorda relationship that makes me full of feminine feelings. But yeah, SotC is definitely the more beloved out of the two.

and that is just taking everything at face value.

The fact that Wander and Mono are the only two people in the forbidden land at the end, as well as Ico taking place in the same land, many years later, there is only one way things can happen. Mono has to raise Wander, alone, just herself and a baby and a couple of animals. No interaction with other humans, other than Wander. Then, when he's grown up, she has to carry his baby and raise that one too. And you also have the whole curse thing Wander gets from Dormin, that will cause tons of horned boys to be outcasts, eventually thrown in a dungeon where they starve to death. Then their soul is trapped in the dungeon, until Ico comes and destroys the place.

The entire forbidden land is a very tragic place, when you think about it.

It's still something most people tend to ignore haha. At the very least, the last part is very bittersweet.
Yeah everyone is still alive, but at what cost? It only made things worse.
The whole thing about killing the colossi was just wrong. As you progressed, you knew what you were doing was bad, and you still pressed on because you wanted to save Mono. I felt extremely bad every time a colossi died and you got hit by those dark snake things ._.

That said, people are left to interpret whatever they want from the ending. I just found it very tragic.

Yeah, even though you have a "just cause", you are very much the bad guy in Shadow of the Colossus. Depending on your interpretation, you're even worse than Dormin too. I agree with you though, the ending might have actually been happier if everyone had died.

And yeah, anyone can interpret these things as they want. Like with the ending of Ico. Fumito Ueda's said his own interpretation was that the ending, with Yorda on the beach, was only a dream that Ico was having while unconcious in the boat. But he said that it is all up to the intepretation of the individual. Kinda interesting, when the creator has his own interpretation, which even he states doesn't have to be the correct one.
