    .... MY GOD

Backstory: I donated to this KS because I adore WayForward and I respected the ideas that Yacht Club had here, plus I wanted to expand my Wii U library. After some... not so respected behavior from the team during the development process (treating the donors like children and oft looking down on them, never updating, delaying the game and giving no one any reason as to why or what the new schedule will be, giving builds of the game to YouTubers, but people who donated thousands of dollars didn't get to see the game till release, etc) I had lost hope in this project and figured it'd be another failed attempt of a game trying to be retro and just ending up using that as an excuse to be simple.

    But... MY GOD

Did you ever want the exploration of Castlevania, the rule of Mega Man, and the soul system of DkS/DeS? Yeah? Well, here it is. I've gotten through three stages now and the bosses really all have character and stand out as difficult and rewarding fights. The balance of losing gems when you die and having to go pick them up (like Souls) is much better than a lives system with this type of game.

The worst thing about this game honestly is just how badly it wants to be a NES game, but having a graphical look that does not remind me of any NES game. They did get the sounds and the effects for that era of game DOWN PAT. But who cares about that crap, it's fun as heck to play.

AHH I WOULD SNAG THIS STAT IF I WASN'T SAVING FOR MY MAME CABINET. I'm glad it's good. That's really unfortunate about the dev team's behavior during development though.

M-m-m-mame cabinet? .____. We can wed now. Let's just skip all the nonsense =P

But yeah, their behavior wasn't really on purpose. They're just the first generation of Kickstarters and really didn't quite grasp the whole "these people are replacing the publisher," rather they still felt they were a studio without a publisher. There's going to be rough patches in the KS process (I'm still bitter about having to go look up YouTube footage to check out a game I helped give the opportunity to exist), but at least it turned out a good GOOOD game. Their actions are no where near as timeless as the game they made, so there's that.

I've been seeing it everywhere too, but something they all have in common is that they kickstarted it. So there's a bit of personal investment to view it as amazing.
Maybe I'm just being cynical, but I'll wait a bit and see if people still say it's great after the hype dies down a little

Quite frankly, you are being cynical. I said in my first post that I lost interest entirely in the game and was expecting it to be bad based off the behavior of the devs. So that leads to..

There's no hype here, at least not from me. This is just actually a good game. The levels are very obstacle course like with lite exploration. If you die, you lose a percentage of treasure to the environment. You can get it back, but you can't die on the way to where you died, much like souls. A cool twist on this formula is that you can sacrifice your checkpoints as you run into them by attacking them to get a ton of extra money. If you do this, you gain about $5000 making the next levels far easier due to more health, more MP, and more gadgets to play with. If you do this and die, you have to spawn at the last available checkpoint (or beginning of the level if you destroyed them all). This adds A LOT of pressure to perfecting your platforming and combat skills giving a great risk and reward element that battles your own player greed. It's as frustrating as you allow it to be as there's no set amount of lives. You can play and risk entirely as much as you want to. The bosses at the end of each level are great too. They all are on your level of skillset, they never feel superior to you or out of your grasp- they just pressure you. The first one fits this especially as he is right out of the Mega Man X sequelitis being a symbol of what you can grow into. Also, King Knight for best character 2014. Oh, and I really like the town hub too just because you can access the sound test and the death counter all via NPCs rather than a menu. Anyway, these are just my opinions. There's a lot of counter arguments to the points I made already.

Here's how you can tell if you want the game: Do you like Mega Man? No no, not do you know of Mega Man, not do you want to play Mega Man, not have you watched a full Let's Play Mega Man, but rather have you actually played and beaten Mega Man games? If so, this'll be right up your alley as it's the same type of obstacle course platforming but with a lot of twists and even some homages to popular NES titles. It's good in my book, and once you know its tricks, well, what you see is what you get.

Okay, but a lot of other people who say it's great have been hyping it up well before it was in a playable state

That sounds a lot like RUNNER 2, where you can jump over checkpoints to get bonus points added to your score. I may have to check this out.

Yeah kind of. If you do, don't play it with a keyboard. This game demands a controller.

You can play it with a keyboard, I just wouldn't.

Troo, but whoever you're referring to isn't here. Give a playa a chance to explain his side and combat it if you wish, but don't toss labels you'd toss at other people at him.

The game is fantastic. I've already beaten three robot masters boss knights, and each level is incredibly unique so far. Difficulty wise, it's as challenging as you'd expect from a game trying to be a NES retro game (not a bad thing at all).
but yeah I'm loving the game.

Spectral Knight and his level can seriously suck my nuts. Was so pumped after I took him down, and on the first go (mighta used a potion of the trouple king or whatever his name is)
