How time flies! It's already been a year since we signed up with DirecTV, and so the stupid price went up from around $72 and some cents to $94 and some cents, and she had to downgrade from Choice all the way to Select because she couldn't even afford $84~ on the Entertainment package, where I would have lost only one channel.

So, I lost six channels from my favorites list:
    • Lifetime Movie Network
    • OWN HD - Dr. Phil, etc.
    • Nicktoons Network - Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Legend of Korra (upcoming), etc.
    • ION East HD and ION West - House, etc.
    • UP - Everybody Hates Chris
    • IFC HD - Malcolm in the Middle

LMN and OWN: I'm not really upset about these, though LMN had good movies now and then. Hardly ever watched them. Dr. Phil is on a local channel, too.

Nicktoons Network: Actually hardly watched this, either, but unlike the above, it had more shows I really liked, and the ****ing main Nickelodeon channel, of course, doesn't air them because the idiots at Nickelodeon don't stop and think, "Hey, maybe some people don't have Nicktoons Network." So, I guess when the new season of The Legend of Korra starts, I won't get to see it. Hooray!

ION: Not TOO big of a deal here. USA also has House.

UP and IFC: Thankfully, MTV2, which we still have, has both Malcolm in the Middle and Everybody Hates Chris, but the problem is that with Malcolm in the Middle, it's currently more toward the beginning of the series, whereas IFC was more toward the end (it was around the beginning of season six, and the show had seven seasons), so now I have to wait a while for them to get there unless I can find everything online.

Alongside all that, I'm also pissed off at my mom for the downgrade and ended up getting into an argument with her, because the only thing we could do that would maybe work in order to not downgrade at all would be to give up my car insurance, which would then make my mom's payment for her own only about $40, but that, of course, means I wouldn't be able to drive, but I told her I'd drive, anyway, since I still have a valid license, and lo and behold, she was against it because I could get into a collision, which would prove problematic since I'd have no insurance, and, of course, she has zero trust in me.

The only other option is for me to get a job, because then we could upgrade back up to where we were (or go further) since I'd be helping with bills, BUT it's not like I'll ever manage to get a job.

I fail to see the point you're trying to get across.

On the contrary, they're completely aware of it. The idea is that people will pay their cable provider more money to get their additional channels.
I understand being frustrated but it's really not your mom's fault and you shouldn't take it out on her. Growing up I was poor, still am, so we had to cut corners in a lot of places, including television. You can get creative with the solutions... watch things on the internet, ditch cable altogether & keep up with shows through Hulu & Netflix & other places on the internet, watch at a friend's house, or just straight up stop watching TV.

Also, driving without insurance is illegal... to be fair people don't follow a lot of laws when it comes to driving (hahahaha 55mph speed limit), but you can get slammed with a pretty hefty ticket for driving without insurance. Drivers without insurance are incredibly costly to all involved too. I don't think it's so much that your mom doesn't trust you to drive, but no one should be driving without insurance. Even if you're driving perfectly, you can still get hit, and good luck paying car repair bills without insurance... not only that but if you do hit someone, you're pretty much ****ing them if you don't have insurance.

If you're trying to reduce your insurance rates, taking defensive driving classes and/or driver's ed can sometimes get you a discount.
I watch television SHOWS, but not really cable anymore. All my TVs have either a Roku or a game console hooked up, and the Hulu/Netflix/Amazon Instant/Piracy quadripartite serves us pretty well.

I guess it's better defined as cable, yeah, but I still don't get it. You have to wait and hope what you want comes on, you have to deal with a million hours of ads, and despite all this it costs a bunch to actually get what you want and you're forced to get a bunch of other stuff you don't want just to access it.
It's so archaic, why do people still use it in 2014

Pretty much the point I reached in like... 2011. Primarily I started moving us over to Netflix-esque services to save money (cable is ****ing expensive), but my family preferred them so much that we've just about ditched cable completely. I don't miss spending 30 minutes searching through the guide only to find that there's only shite on and dealing with commercials. Just ????????
I'll take binge watching OITNB over that any day

Misty already touched on everything expertly, so I won't do a repeat of that. But Korra does still show on the main Nick channel. They also put it online on the site, and countless people host livestreams of the new episodes the day that they air.

    so, related note
How terrifying is it that that future could have us pay for internet the same way we pay for cable

I never get why people's complaints about ads. Sure, a lot of them are annoying, but it's part of the system. You're not forced to watch them; you can easily just tune them out. Plus, there actually is a used to them when it comes to the structure of good television shows.

Pretty ****ing terrifying, although John Oliver crashing the FCC website gives me hope
I do agree that they can be useful to build suspense but they reflect the rampant capitalism and consumerism in American society, which disgusts me, and they do too. So many of them are trying to sell us pretty repulsive ideas (makeup commercials are a great example). A lot of them are just straight up annoying too. I don't want people yelling at me to buy their product.

I want to sit down an enjoy the show, not 20 minutes of show and 10 minutes of ads. The worst case is movies, where they randomly cut in the middle of dialog and stuff. Sure, TV shows are often based around the ad structure (though if you watch shows from years ago when there were less ads you get that same movie thing they they just get cut off randomly)
In theory I have no problem with ads. It's how most people make their movie in the entertainment industry, but the bold faced intrusiveness makes it a lot harder to swallow, especially when for a tiny fee you can watch it without ads on Netflix, or just pirate it. Piracy is illegal, yeah, but ti's still their competition. I prefer Netflix over piracy because it offers me far better service than a torrent site.
I wish it were acceptable for stuff like youtube to have more ads, so content creators I like could get more money, and I dislike the smug adblock culture, but I definitely don't want to watch something on youtube full of breaks and stuff
(as for the tune it out thing, that involves having something else to do while watching TV, that's a lot more active than I'd assume most TV watchers want to be, since most people I know do it to relax)
but honestly, I think people would tolerate ads a lot more if they were just... a lot better

They're just a bunch of cheapskates.

I'm sorry. I'm just stressed. Combining this with our frequent Internet problems and the fact that I'm so discouraged about getting a job, I'm at my limit. My mom keeps saying to go to work source, and I can't even get the motivation for that -- how pathetic am I?

I ended up apologizing to my mom (and she did as well), but yeah.

I'm not seeing it anywhere on the guide.

Dr Phil is a fucking joke and an insult to the people that actually give a damn about improving the terrible mental healthcare in the United States.

"You have a problem, let me exploit your problems on TV and tell you how wrong you are the whole time". YEAH because in the history of time itself, telling someone they are wrong over and over fixes fucking everything.

I've noticed an increase in typos in your posts. Are you trying to humanize yourself or are you being lazy?

The latter. I have not been active on a forum in a long time.
