As I am sure many of you are aware there is a process known as "Continental Drift", America, for example is said to be moving roughly 4cm a year from the UK.

My question is this, if Continental Drift (CD) is causing places to move further away from each other, and the Earth is a globe, does this mean that in time the continents could remerge and recreate the Super-Continent that existed before (Pangea) as they meet on the other side?

Look at any map and you can fit places together like a jigsaw puzzle, are we heading back to that picture? (True the continents would be merged in a different way due to the directions we are moving apart).

Thought and Comments? What do you think? Or am I just thinking weird thoughts again? xDDD

I actually thought about this a day or two ago, but then realized firstly it would take hundreds of years (and by then we'll have killed ourselves through Global Warming).

I suppose there is a possibility, but I surely won't live to see it.

For sure none of us will see it ^^ I just wondered if it was realistic to think it could happen :) glad I'm not the only one who has thought about it 8D

Interesting idea. It would happen again although it wouldn't look the same as you would be putting the pieces back together the wrong way round. New mountain ranges would be created along the collision lines. New inland seas and lakes would also be created. It would be interesting to see maps in 50 odd years and compare them with the maps now to see if there is any noticeable difference (although it is unlikely >_>)

    I agree.
But the continents wouldnt fit together like puzzle pieces so I guess new mountain ranges would be made and there would be one or two oceans.

    hundreds of years?

It would take millions of years before that happens again. But it probably will happen again. Though we will never live to see it....even thousands of generations down the line.

Also due to Continental Drift at one point in time LA and San Francisco will be next to each other.

Edit: .Kairi.- they actually do go together like a jigsaw.

But they wouldn't, they are going the wrong way around the world to fit together the same way.

In my defence I DID say they would join differently xDD

I agree with DA over the time frame, afterall it has taken millions of years to get to where we are now with the landforms, not to mention the fact that we are still recovering from the last ice age.

I think of it a little bit like the Big Bang Big Crunch theory, but limited to Earth ^^

That actually depends,if the americas moved southeast and eurasia moves west, THEN, africa collides into south america (GO BRAZIL!! XD) They would all fit and would become "Pangea-Reincarnated" (Pangea-"R")

It's already being anticipated that California will no longer be as we see it on the map today within the next hundred or so years. The fault line there continues to show signs of deterioration and will eventually just split.

Yes, it is probable that there will be Pangea 2. The continents are drifting closer every year. It will take Millions of years for the continents to come together though.

Yes, this will happen as well. Constant Earthquakes will eventually split California and Nevada apart. And after that, California will either drift away from Nevada or collide with it, causing changes in the land and the formation of new landforms like Mountains

1love, don't make me quote Keiji! Too bad here it is: 'You worry too much! Just smile! Now lets have some fun!

If pangea does happen over agin then I don't see too much of a problem, if it doesn't affect anything badly, it shouldn't be a big problem in my mind.

If a nuclear war was to break out, then we'd all be screwed. War would be a gaint problem and could be the end of the world as we know it.
