I managed to get my hands on Persona 3 Portable for about 15 minutes yesterday and being my first experience with the franchise it seems like something I could become totally engrossed in and play for hours and hours and hours. Particularly the social-aspect. That seems like something that I could really latch onto in addition to the action. But this is all based off of one fight and not much else, so I may start playing it and find out it's not for me.

But yeah, needless to say FES has moved to the top of my to-buy-as-soon-as-I-have-money-to-spare list.

Was the single fight you played the very first one where you first get a Persona, or one with party members? P3P and FES play differently in regards to the party members (P3P let's you control them, FES they attack by themselves but you can prioritize what type of movepool you want them to use), so that might influence your decision, lol.

FES also has a bonus playable epilogue~

    There were no party members.

I've read about the differences between P3, P3FES, and P3P somewhat. During the spring I planned to get FES but never did and kinda forgot about it.
I do want to get FES first because it seems like a fuller experience, being able to play as the character and not a cursor on the screen and all, and then if I find that I like it I'll get P3P sometime later when I want to replay.
I also plan to get P4 as well at some point. Unless I just absolutely hate the mechanics of the game then I won't. But if it's just a matter of atmosphere and characters I'll try P4 and maybe I'll find it's more to my taste. though I doubt that

I can't really speak on it since I haven't finished yet, but it gets points for ma lady being the main star in it

Oh both P3P and P4 use the same gameplay mechanics so there isn't much of a jump on that front, aside from some specific optional stuff.

    That's what I'm saying.
If that's not what I dislike about P3 I'll give P4 a try, or if I like P3 I'll try it anyway. But if I don't like the mechanics I'm going to assume Persona is not for me.

As someone who played Persona 4 Golden and then moved on to FES, I must admit the latter disappointed me, to an extent. All the concepts, story, characters, gameplay, battle mechanics, or really just both games in general are fantastic and super fun, social interaction being my favorite aspect as well. I mean, I literally spent months savoring, if you will, my first p4g playthrough. However, I'm not saying you should play it first like I did; quite the opposite, in fact. Had I tried FES first, there's no doubt that my impression of both games would've been far better. Is it bad that I never got around to finishing it? I blame Elizabeth's requests

That should be as far as my experience with the franchise goes, sadly. Can't say anything about other titles or versions, like p3p and the original p4, so I might be somewhat biased. Definitely looking forward to future releases, though. So, please, do The Universe (get it?) a favor and play whatever variant of Persona 3 you pick before going for 4, otherwise you possibly run the risk of ending up like me. /two cents

Not in The Answer, but I made the mistake of using him way too much in The Journey, so I had to rely on him for the battle against Nyx because he was my highest leveled non-MC character. I corrected for that in The Answer by keeping Yukari the whole way through.

I love P3P just because I can play as a girl whoops
Well I guess thats icing on the cake for me
the real good thing is getting control of teammates, extra social links (for a girl that is) and I find the characters more enjoyable than P4.
