    Overwhelming Darkness

    Chapter one: Introduction

“Ashia! Ashia!†Black touched the depths of Ashia’s eyes, she felt like she was slowly slipping into darkness. She had been warned about this but she didn’t believe it would ever happen to her. She always pictured the ones that slip into darkness to be the bad guys that had done horrible things in their lives but that can’t be now, “I haven’t done anything horrible†she thought, “have I?†In the distance she could hear her name being called out again and again she tried to call for help but no words past her lips, she was being engulfed in darkness. It was drowning her, she tried to run, she just wanted to get as far away from darkness as she could but it held her down. Every limb in her body felt like it was made of cement. She could no longer hear the voices calling her nor could she see the bright sun shining on her; everything was just dark.

She felt a rush of cold air against her cheeks, it made her shiver. She realised then that this was the end, she was about to enter the emptiness of darkness, she didn’t even get a chance to say goodbye to her friends or family and she would probably never see them again. She tried to shout out again but she knew that no-one could hear her. She was just about to give up and let darkness take her when she felt the sudden warmth of an embrace. Her thoughts flickered to what was happening, someone was clinging onto her but all she could see was darkness.

She heard a grief stricken voice “Ashia, Ashia, don’t leave!†It was him! She reached out grabbing at thin air trying to hold on to him, she was slipping further into darkness. She felt him hold her tighter not wanting to let go.

“Make your way back to us, Ashia!†He was pulled from her as she sank into darkness she felt like she would fall forever; the rush of cold air was getting stronger, her light brown hair whipped at her cheeks; she tried to grab onto something but all she could hold onto was darkness; it was all around her. Was this what it was like, darkness, endless falling with no sign of stopping, she thought. Lately many people from her village had been captured by the darkness; everyone was terrified that they would be next. She thought of him and the pact that they had made together. Then suddenly with great force she came to a stop, her body crashing to the cold floor sending her enormous pain.

She felt like she had shattered to a million pieces, every part of her hurt. She tried to pull herself up, using her last energy she got to her feet, to cope with the pain she bit her lip, she didn’t realise then but her once plump lips were oozing blood from her biting it, the blood trickled done her chin until a few drops fell to the ground. Were the blood landed, a great blinding light came up from the ground, engulfing her, she couldn’t see anything. Then out of the light came a stern voice.
“The strongest ones are the ones that survive the fall...I guess I should congratulate you but perhaps you were better off dead...â€
“Who are you?!†Ashia screamed into the blinding light, silence, and then a figure stepped closer to Ashia she could barely see him; his face was covered in shadow despite the bright light.
“I am here to help. But I can only help if you are willing to accept my help.†said the mysterious figure.
“What help?†She wasn’t sure what was going on. Should she trust this person?
“You want to see your family and friends again, right? They all do but sometimes they aren’t ready yet.†This answer just confused Ashia more; she didn’t know what to say so she didn’t say anything.
    “I sense you’re confused.†He stepped closer.
“Of course I am! I’m sorry I don’t have experience with the darkness to know what to expect!†she said sharply, he took another step forward, “Stay away! I’m warning you!â€
    The mysterious figure started laughing.
    “What’s so funny?†she asked irritated.
“Oh nothing just you seem very confident that you could take me on, when really you have no chance.†He turned and stepped away from Ashia, “but if you don’t want my help I will leave.â€
Ashia looked around, there was only nothingness, she would have to accept his help...for now, “Wait...I want...I want you to help me...for now...â€
“You seem unsure, Ashia†he turned back.
“How do you know my name?†Ashia asked.
“I know a lot of things, so do you really want my help or not?â€
Ashia thought for a moment, “Yes I want your help.â€

    Chapter two: Strangers

“Alright†he said gleefully, he stepped forward to reveal a huge grin. Ashia studied him carefully, this is the first time she could see him clearly; he didn’t look like what she had thought. He had messy blonde hair and large green eyes and he looked about Ashia’s age, 16. His large goofy smile made her giggle, he started laughing too.
“I’m sorry if I scared you...but I had to make sure you were tough enough†his smile disappeared and he looked at her sternly, “It won’t be easy getting back to your family and friends but I have a good feeling that you’ll make it†he smiled at her again, then with his left hand he opened something that appeared to be a portal.
“Follow me†He started walking in the portal but he must have sensed her uneasiness because he stopped and turned around extending his hand, “don’t worry, I’ll protect you, promise.â€
Ashia slipped her hand into his and instantly felt safe; she looked into his green eyes, “I trust you†and with that he led her into the portal. The portal led them to a small old shack that was practically falling down.
“The first thing to do is for you to rest, we can’t have you collapsing from exhaustion before the battle even begins†he said jokingly, “You can sleep there, I’ll be right outside if you need Me.†he said pointing to a small bed. She nodded and he exited the shack and left her to rest.
Ashia woke to the sunlight filtering in through the cracks in the shack roof. She slowly got out of the small bed; she still ached from the fall yesterday. She looked around the room, besides the small bed there was only a small table, she walked over to the table; on top was a small stack of clothes. She looked down at her dress, it was her favourite and until yesterday was in good condition; now it was ripped and looked like an old rag. She changed into the new clothes and walked outside. She squinted at the bright sun, she hadn’t realised how dark the shack had been. She felt warm sand in between her toes and realised she on the beach, looking around she spotted him sitting next to a fire, he heard her walking up behind him and looked over his shoulder.
“Good morning!†he said happily, “perfect timing, the fish is done.†He handed her a stick that had been in the fire, on the end was a fish.
“Thanks...uh†she thought for a second then turned back to him, “you never did tell me your name.â€
“Oh, it’s Toru†he smiled at her, “I see you found the new clothes I left.â€
“Oh yeah thanks...†she smiled at Toru and nibbled at her fish, “Yum! This is really tasty, I hadn’t realised how hungry I was.†Toru chuckled then looked out at the ocean.
After eating Ashia walked along the beach trying to find out where she was but after walking for an hour and finding no-one she turned back, following her footsteps in the sand to the shack. When she got back Toru was standing at the water’s edge watching the ocean again. She walked over to him.
“Welcome back†Toru turned to face her, he looked sad.
    “What’s wrong?â€
“Ah...nothing†Toru said cheering up. Toru throw a bamboo stick at Ashia, she caught it.
    “What’s this for?â€
“You’ll start training with that….†He saw how confused she looked, ‘I know it looks like just an ordinary stick… because it is just an ordinary stick…but you’ll learn to do some nifty things with it….†He looked at her smiling.
“Oh…†she looked at the long bamboo stick then back at Toru, “like hit things with it?†she said oozing ridicule.
“Well yes…I guess... but I can teach you to do other stuff too.â€
    “Like what?â€
“Like this…†Toru closed his eye and thrust out his right hand towards the ocean, his face showed his concentration. Ashia looked past his arm to the sea, were she could just see a large bubble of water rising out of it. It floated in the air for a couple seconds before racing over to Ashia. She let out a squeal as the water zipped around her twice before going towards the fire; it hovered again for a couple seconds then doused the fire, instantly it went out. Toru opened his eyes and smirked at Ashia’s astonished face.
“That…that…that was amazing!†Ashia said lost for words, she ran over to the extinguished fire, “incredible!†she excitedly turned back to Toru, “do it again!â€
Toru laughed, “Maybe later.†He spun around and walked inside the small shack, leaving Ashia with her mouth wide open still.
Later that night Ashia was sitting by herself watching the waves roll up the sand then disappear back out into the ocean. She hugged her legs and drifted into a light sleep. “You’re little so you might not understand...but the concept will always be in your mind and when you’re older you’ll be able to unlock it....†Ashia opened her eyes; it was still night, in her dream she remembered something her grandfather had told her when she was young but she couldn’t figure out what he had meant... unlock it....unlock what? She thought.

Chapter three: A place to be

In the morning Ashia decided to make Toru breakfast, she swam out into the ocean to see if she could catch some fish. She spotted one on her left and lunged for it but it was too quick and swam away. She sighed and walked back onto the beach. In the distance she spotted a couple of coconuts on a palm tree. She decided that the coconut milk would make a great drink and climbed up the tree to pull them down. She reached the top of the tree, while pulling the coconuts off she noticed the view, it captivated her. The beautiful clear blue ocean surrounded the tiny island and the sunrise was amazing, it turned the clouds a pale pink. In the distance she could just make out another island. She dropped the coconuts to the ground and slide down the trunk just as Toru came out of the shack.
“Toru!†Ashia yelled while running over to him with the coconuts, “I thought we could have these for breakfast.†she held out one to Toru.
    “Thanks†Toru said still half asleep.
They sat on planks of wood around the fire which was now extinguished after Toru’s show yesterday.
    “Toru…where are we?†Ashia asked timidly.
“Where we are is not important…†Toru quickly dismissed her question and went on drinking.
    “No please tell me!†Ashia pleaded.
Toru looked up at her, her deep blue eyes meet with his, he couldn’t look away, something in them made him want to share his life with her, but he couldn’t, he knew that.
“This place, it’s called Destiny Islands†Toru watched her carefully; he assumed that she already knew that they were no where near her village.
“Destiny aye…†Ashia looked out at the sea pondering.
    “Mm…destiny…seems fitting doesn’t it?†Toru said smiling.
“Yeah…†Ashia sipped some more coconut milk. “Does anyone else live here?â€
“Yeah, they live on the main land.†Toru pointed into the distance to the island Ashia had spotted before, “But they come over here on small boats sometimes…â€
Ashia stood up, “Let me meet them!†She looked at Toru, a large grin plastered across her face.
“No...It’s not that simple...†Toru trailed off looking out to the ocean.
“How come?†Ashia sat back down next to Toru, her face somber.
“You and me...we’re not like them...†Toru looked at Ashia, her hair was in her face and her eyes were dull.
    “I...I don’t understand†Ashia stammered.
“Forget it†Toru stood up and walked away from Ashia.
“Hey!†Ashia ran after him, “Toru!†She ran in front of him forcing him to stop.
    “What?†He asked fiercely.
“What do you mean?†Ashia asked antagonized.
“Don’t worry!†he went to walk around Ashia but she grabbed his arm pulling him back.
“Try and understand it from my point of view, I was taken from my home, from my family and friends, thrust into darkness, then I followed you here for help,†Ashia drew out the word help, “And have you helped? No! I’ve never been more confused in my life!†Ashia fell to her knees and burst into tears, “Just tell me what’s happening to me!†Toru knelt beside her, gently tilting her chin up with his hand so they were looking eye to eye. Tears that were building up in her eyes rolled down her cheeks. He gave her a meek smile.
“If it’s that important to you, we’ll meet them. But don’t say I didn’t warn you...†He helped her up and carefully whipped away her tears.
    “I’m sorry...for overacting†She mumbled.
“It’s ok, I understand...†He grinned at her, “Just cheer up!â€

    Chapter Four: Intertwined Destinies

A few days had past, Toru had insisted on showing Ashia some basic fighting techniques before they went to meet new people.
Toru huffed, “I think that’s enough for today, you’re really becoming rather good!†Toru lay in the warm sand, catching his breath.
“Finally!†Ashia collapsed in the sand exhausted, “Does that mean we can meet the islanders soon?â€
“Alright...we’ll go tomorrow†Toru got to his feet and walked over to the fire place. Night was just beginning to fall and it was growing cold. Ashia came over and rested on a plank of wood.
“Can you use your trick to light the fire?†She looked at him blissfully.
    “I don’t know....â€Toru said teasingly,
    “Oh c’mon!â€
“Ok ok†Toru closed his eyes concentrating. He opened them suddenly, training them on two sticks; they lifted off the ground and began rubbing together rapidly. Sparks flew all around until a fire started, he slowly hovered the sticks back into the fire place.
“Awesome!†Ashia said impressed. Toru just smiled and sat down. Ashia looked at the flickering fire.
    Unlock it...Unlock it.
    Ashia gasped.
“What’s wrong?†Toru looked at her concerned.
“Oh...nothing†Ashia looked away nervously. Am I losing my mind? She thought to herself. Toru and her sat by the fire talking until they both fell asleep under the stars.
Toru squinted, it was morning already, today he promised to take Ashia to meet the islanders; he regretted that promise. He sensed movement beside him. He rolled over as Ashia opened her crystal clear blue eyes. He smiled at her; he was glad that she was the first thing he saw in the morning.
    “Good morning†he said,
Ashia smiled, “Morning†she sat up in the sand yawning, “We get to meet the islanders today†she spoke suddenly coming to life, she jumped up. Toru got up slowly.
“Yeah...first let’s have breakfast...†Toru said trying to delay the meeting.
“Ok, I’ll find something for breakfast!†She shouted over her shoulder as she ran down the beach looking for food. Toru sighed, she is really excited for this meeting but she doesn’t understand the danger, Toru thought to himself, I’ll just have to protect her if anything happens. Just then Ashia came running back.
“I found some fruit!â€She held out a star shaped fruit to Toru.
    “Uh Ashia...that’s a paopu fruit...†Toru trailed off.
    “So...what’s a paopu?†she asked confused.
“Nothing...†Toru looked at his feet then back at Ashia, “It’s just that it is said if two people share one their destinies become intertwined...they’ll remain a part of each other’s lives no matter what.â€
Ashia laughed, “What’s so bad about that? I happen to enjoy your company but if you dislike me that much then I’ll have it all to myself†she said teasingly.
“Uh...†Toru sighed, “I guess you’re right, and I enjoy your company too†Toru stuck his tongue out at Ashia and took a bite of the fruit.
“To intertwined destinies!†Ashia smiled and took a bite.
“To intertwined destinies†Toru agreed and they both finished the paopu fruit together.

    Chapter Five: Befriending the Islanders

Ashia followed Toru down the beach. They had finished breakfast and were now going to meet the islanders. The sun shined on Ashia’s shoulder length brown hair, it was such a nice day but Ashia didn’t notice, for some reason she had a weird feeling inside. She clutched her stomach. Toru heard her moan,
“Are you ok?†he said turning back to face her,
“Yeah... Just nerves I guess.†She looked down at her stomach. “I don’t know whyâ€
“You should be nervous...†he said uneasily.
“How come you are so concerned about us meeting them?†She looked into his eyes, “What is it that you’re not telling me?†she said troubled
“It’s just that were not like them so they may...be...uh...hostile towards us.†Toru looked at his feet then back up at Ashia.
“Hostile?†Ashia laughed, “What’s not to like about us?†Ashia said making the freakiest face she could.
    Toru laughed, “I guess you’re rightâ€
They walked on the water’s edge, the waves washing up over their feet.
“Even if they don’t like us we still have each other, remember our destinies are intertwined?†Ashia said splashing Toru with water.
“As if I could forget†He said splashing her.
They walked in a comfortable silence, just enjoying each other’s company until Ashia spotted two figures a little further down.
“Look!†Ashia pointed. She started running towards the figures, Toru close behind. She stopped running when she could she them properly, Toru almost ran into the back of her. The two figures were sitting on the edge of the pier; she approached them, the wood from the pier creaking underneath her shoes. They were both guys, about her age. One had spiky brown hair and the other had long silver hair. She walked closer, her heart racing. The brown haired person turned around and jumped up with a loud scream, the other one turned around too.
“Don’t scare me like that!†The brown hair guy said puffing trying to catch his breath; he looked at her realising how regretful she looked, the other boy got up smiling.
“Don’t listen to him, he is just a big baby†He said pushing the brown haired boy out of the way. He put his hand out to shake, “I’m Riku and this is Sora†Ashia shook his hand. Sora, recovered from the fright now had a large smile on his face. He shook Ashia’s hand.
“Sorry about that, you just gave me a surprise...†he said laughing. Ashia laughed too.
“My name’s Ashia†She said grinning, she didn’t understand why Toru was so worried, she looked around for him, she noticed him at the end of the pier hiding behind a bush.
“I’ll be right back!†she said then ran over to where Toru was hiding, she pulled him out from behind the bush, “What are you doing?†she asked.
“I...uh dropped something.†He said lamely noticing Sora and Riku’s gaze. They both walked over to Ashia and Toru.
“Hi there†they both said in unison.
    “Uh hi...I’m Toru†Toru said cautiously.
“You been here long?†Riku asked eyeing Toru.
“Well I’m not sure about Toru but I’m new around here, only a couple of weeks†Ashia smiled, “It’s nice to finally meet some new people besides Toru.â€
“Hey! I’m not that bad am I?†he said sticking his tongue out at Ashia.
“Of course not! I was only joking†she laughed.
“I’ve never seen you around here so you must be new, right Toru?†Sora asked Toru.
“Yeah...new†Toru looked at his feet nervously; he wondered if they could sense how different he and Ashia were to them.
Riku sat down at the end of the pier and Sora joined him,
“Come sit guys!†Sora shouted over his shoulder. Ashia moved to sit next to them but Toru caught her arm and looked into her eyes, his eyes reflected a warning to Ashia but she just smiled and pulled him over to sit. The four of them sat there for the rest of the day talking but Ashia didn’t mention the fact that she had gone through darkness to get here to Toru’s relief. The sun was just setting when Riku stood up,
“It’s getting late, we better be off.†He said looking at Sora.
    “Awww...do we have too?†Sora complained.
“Yeah do you really have to go?†Ashia chimed in.
Riku looked out across the ocean to the main island, “We better be home before someone gets worried...†He said anxiously.
“Okay....I guess we better go...†Sora whined, “Tomorrow we’ll bring Kairi to meet you guys.†He got up and they both waved goodbye and walked off down the beach towards their boats. Ashia turned to Toru when they were out of hearing range,
“See that wasn’t so bad, I don’t know what you were so worried about†Ashia punched him softly in the arm, “Let’s head back†She said getting up and running down the beach, Toru followed. At that moment Riku turned to Sora,
“Something just doesn’t feel right about those two.†He said plainly. Sora nodded and they travelled the rest of the way home in silence.

    Chapter Six: Confusing Revelation

Toru walked next to Ashia, he looked at her, her hair was shining in the sunlight and she wore a smile on her face. He smiled at her.
“What do you think Kairi is like?†She turned to him.
“No idea...†he said shrugging, he hoped that Kairi wouldn’t sense anything either. They could just see the pier now, three people sat at the edge of it; their feet dangling in the cool water, Ashia started running towards them excitedly. Toru walked over to the group just as Sora was introducing Ashia to a beautiful girl that he assumed was Kairi; she had long red hair and deep blue eyes.
“Hi! It’s so nice to meet you, I heard a lot about you from Sora yesterday. Oh and this is Toru.†Ashia said to Kairi.
    “Hey†Toru smiled.
“Hi, I’m Kairi†she smiled back at Toru, “Riku and Sora told me that you’ve only just moved here.â€
“Yeah that’s right†Ashia replied still excited about seeing them again.
“Did these two show you around yesterday?†Kairi’s voice was sweet and innocent but Toru was still unconvinced, he wondered if he was just being paranoid. Sora and Riku looked at their feet.
    “Nope they didn’t†Ashia laughed.
“Well there really isn’t much too see...†Riku said thinking, “hmm...I know! Follow me!†Riku said running down the beach to a small waterfall. The rest of the group followed closely behind. Riku led them into a small cave.
“When we were young we use to hang out here all the time†Riku smiled.
Ashia studied the pictures on the wall, “I assume these are your artworks then?†Ashia smiled at a drawing of a boy with spiky hair that looked like Sora.
    “Yeah, that one’s mine.†Kairi laughed.
They walked out of the cave.
“Let’s go for a walk down the beach†Kairi said eagerly.
    “Sure!†Sora happily agreed.
“I meant just me and Ashia†Kairi smiled.
    “Oh...†Sora said disappointed.
“That way you guys can bond†She stuck her tongue out and walked away, Ashia beside her. Toru watch Ashia leave, this was not a good idea, what happens if it was a trap...would Ashia be able to defend herself? Have I taught her enough... he thought to himself. He saw out of the corner of his eye Sora and Riku staring at him.
“Uh so...†Toru said nervously, he took a step back cautiously.
Riku smiled at Toru, “What’s wrong? You seem nervous...â€
“Nothing...†he watched Sora and Riku move closer.
    =====
Ashia looked back, she and Kairi had walked for ages; she could no longer see the pier or the others.
    “So where’re you staying?â€
“Just up ahead...†Ashia said spotting the small shack.
“So where did you move from?†Kairi asked curiously.
“Uh...†Ashia looked at the waves just covering her feet.
“Is something wrong?†Kairi saw her uneasy face.
“Oh I just miss my old home, it’s so far away...†a tear rolled down her face, she quickly wiped it away hoping Kairi didn’t see it.
“Sorry if I upset you...†Kairi mumbled,
“I’m fine†Ashia smiled. She looked down the quite beach; the sun was just setting on the horizon. She sat down in the cool sand, “So...does anything interesting ever happen around here?†Ashia said grinning, Kairi laughed to herself, they had only just come back from their huge adventure a few months ago.
“Yeah...†Kairi sighed looking out at the sunset, “this was nice...†she said quietly
    “What was?†Ashia asked puzzled,
“Meeting new people...it’s nice to meet another girl...†Kairi laughed.
It was getting dark; Ashia looked down the beach to see if she could see Toru returning. She heard Kairi get up next to her and turned back.
    “I guess I better be off...†She said.
“Did you want me to come back with you so I can find Toru?†Ashia asked,
“Nah, I’m sure Toru will be back any second†she said smiling, “see you tomorrow!†she turned and ran back down the beach, once she was out of sight Ashia laid back in the sand stargazing, soon she fell asleep.

“Watch carefully now.†Ashia trained her eyes on her grandfather, and nodded. He held out his wrinkly hand towards her. The small child lifted off the ground; she floated in the air for a few seconds then gently floated back to the ground.
“Now you try†he said excited, “You’re so close to getting it, I just know it†he smiled at her. She smiled back. She stuck out her hand in front of her.
“That’s it! Close your eyes! Concentrate!†his voice kind. She had her eyes closed tight but after a minute she opened them and frowned, her grandad sighed, “maybe you’ll get it tomorrow...†He said patting her head; he opened his mouth to say something else…

Ashia woke up to something poking her, she looked around, it was still dark; Toru was kneeling beside her poking her,
    “Ok ok I’m awake!†She laughed.
“About time†Toru said jokingly but Ashia sensed something wasn’t right, she sat up at looked into Toru’s eyes,
    “What’s wrong?†she asked seriously.
“Huh? Nothing’s wrong...†Toru looked away from Ashia.
“Toru...†Ashia put her hand on his shoulder, “tell me what’s wrongâ€
“I‘m telling you nothing’s wrong!†he smiled to reassure her.
“Ok...but I’m still not convinced,†she said looking at him closely, “So how was your day with Riku and Sora?â€
“Normal I guess. They’re actually pretty nice guys...â€
“Told you! So what did you do?†she asked curiously.
    “Talked...oh and we foughtâ€
    “Fought?†Ashia looked at him concerned.
Toru laughed, “Play fighting, silly.†He lay back next to Ashia, “they’re pretty good but what do you expect for keyblade masters...â€
    “Keyblade masters?†Ashia laid down too, “What’s that?â€
Toru explained Sora and Riku’s story to Ashia until they fell asleep. That night Ashia dreamed about their adventures, she dreamt she was there with them fighting against the heartless. She slashed at one with the bamboo stick Toru had given her to train with, when she saw a hooded figure walking towards her; she pointed the stick at the figure. She thought she heard a small chuckle then her bamboo stick snapped without the figure even touching it, she was left defenceless, she turned around to Sora for help but he was nowhere to be seen and all the heartless had disappeared. It was just her and the mysterious hooded figure. She ran at the figure with her fist, but the figure dodged it.
“Fighting for the wrong side, aren’t we Ashia? Face it, you belong to darkness now!â€
    “You’re wrong!†She screamed.
Ashia woke up suddenly, the figure was gone, she was back on the beach next to Toru; the sun was just rising. She stood up and stretched, she walked to the edge of the water; she splashed some water on her face. She looked out across the water to the main island, suddenly she remembered something...
    “Maybe you’ll get it tomorrow...â€

    Chapter Seven: Unravel

A cool breeze carried the fresh smell of the ocean; Toru rolled over and glanced at the morning sun. He yawned, pulling himself to his feet he noticed Ashia sitting on a rock staring at the air in front of her intently.
“What’s up?†Toru called walking over to her. She turned around, a huge grin was plastered across her face,
“I finally did it!†she said excitedly. Toru looked at her confused,
“Did what?†he asked. Ashia pointed into the space she had been staring at,
“Look!†Toru leaned in to where she was pointed,
“What is it?†He said not seeing anything.
“Look closer!†Toru squinted; he saw the outline of a small grain of sand floating in the air. He looked at Ashia confused.
“I made it float! I’m telekinetic!†she announced proudly. Toru started laughing so much he had to gasp for air.
“What’s so funny?†Ashia demanded. Toru held in his laughter when he looked at the grain of sand again, he smirked at Ashia.
“I guess you really did start off small†he said pointing to it, “Now all you have to do is work your way up!†Ashia frowned at his remark.
“I had to start somewhere! It’s not like you were lifting great water bubbles when you started.†She said annoyed then she smiled.
“Wait till I tell Sora about this!†she turned and skipped off down the beach leaving Toru, who had entered another laughing fit.
    =====
Ashia found Riku practicing his fighting skills,
    “Hi Riku!†she waved smiling.
“Hey!†he walked over with his keyblade.
“So this is one of the legendary keyblades!†She said staring at it.
“Uh yeah, I guess Toru told you about them then.†He smiled, dismissing his keyblade.
“Yeah yesterday...it’s so cool about you and Sora being Keyblade masters†she said intrigued.
    “Yeah†Riku laughed.
“So where’s Sora?†she said looking around.
“Oh Kairi and him are further down the beach†he said pointing.
“Thanks, see you later!†Ashia smiled and walked along the beach, Riku turned back to training.
Ashia went to yell out hello to Sora and Kairi when they came into view but no words came out instead she hid behind a bush and watched. Sora held Kairi’s hand as they walked down the beach, occasionally they gazed into each other’s eyes. She suddenly felt hot, she turned away not wanting to watch them anymore. Still hiding behind the bush, she frowned, she realised she was jealous of their relationship, she wanted to be that close to Sora. She turned back glaring at Kairi, she watched them angrily then she sighed. I guess they’ve been through a lot together she thought, she waited till they were gone turned to run home but ran straight into Riku.
“Why were you hiding behind that bush?†Riku said curiously, raising his eyebrow.
    “Uh...uh†Ashia mumbled lost for words,
    “I...uh...dropped something...â€she said hopelessly.
    “Oh yeah...†Riku smirked.
“Uh...guess what!†She said changing the subject.
    “What?â€
    “I’m telekinetic!â€
“So you can move objects with your mind?†Riku laughed.
“I can!†Ashia frowned and she concentrated on a small rock on the ground, she made it float in front of Riku’s eyes for a split second before it plummeted to the ground. Riku stared at her surprised,
“I guess you really can†he said astonished, she nodded happily, “C’mon it’s getting late let me walk you back...†Riku said still partly surprised. They walked down the beach heading towards the small shack. Riku talked about how he and Sora defeated Xemnas, Ashia listened to his stories hypnotized by the excitement of the battle.
“I dreamt about a hooded person last night, similar to your description of the organisation nobodies.†She said interrupting Riku, she paused for a minute remembering it; “He told me that I was fighting on the wrong side and that I belonged in darkness†Ashia said confused.
“You don’t belong in darkness...†Riku said somber, “I once walked in darkness, but you just have to remember that in every heart there is a light that never goes out†He said a little more cheerfully. They reached the shack; Toru was sitting by a fire,
“Hey! You’re finally back!†He said rushing over, “Hi Rikuâ€
“Hey†Riku said kindly, “I better get back as well, sorry I couldn’t stay longer†he turned and walked off down the beach.
“So what did they say when you told them†Toru said turning back to Ashia
“Well I only talked to Riku and at first he didn’t believe me until I showed him†she said proudly.
“A grain of sand again?†Toru grinned.
“I’ll have you know it was a small rock†Ashia giggled.
For the next few weeks Ashia spent most of her time in Sora’s company growing fonder of him with each meeting. But she also frequently practised her fighting and telekinetic skills, she tried to remember more of what her grandfather had told her but nothing else came. The more time she lived on the island the more she felt like she was losing her past; her friends and family were just a fond distant memory now, but one thing remained loud in her mind, the final words she had heard before darkness ripped her away from her home, make your way back to us...

    Chapter Eight: Moments Together

Sunlight filtered in the small window in the shack’s wall, last night Ashia had slept in the shack because it was beginning to grow colder at nights. She swung her feet out of bed onto the cold floor, she shivered. Toru had insisted on sleeping on the floor but now he wasn’t there. Ashia slipped on her sandals. Sora crossed her mind when she was deciding what to do for the day, she excitedly ran out of the shack and down the beach towards where Sora normally hanged out with Riku and Kairi.
“Hey!†Ashia halted hearing Toru’s voice sounding from behind her, “Where are you going?†she spun around and looked at Toru; he was cooking fish over a small fire.
“I’m going to see Sora!†Ashia called, she turned heading away from him when Toru called out again.
““Don’t you think you’re seeing a little too much of them?â€
“What are you? My parent?†Ashia said sharply, she regretted saying it when saw Toru look away hurt.
    “I’m just concerned†Toru mumbled “What about Training?â€
“We’ve trained everyday this week†She said disgruntled.
“But you can never have too much training†Toru said half-heartedly.
“You’re no fun!†Ashia yelled frustrated as she ran off down the beach, Toru sighed as she watched her leave.
    ====
Ashia sat on the end of the pier, hugging her legs tightly, it had started pouring rain. Suddenly the rain drops stopped, she looked up; Kairi was holding a bright purple umbrella over her head.
“What’s wrong?†Kairi said sitting next to her.
“It’s Toru...he treats me like I’m a little kid, I can look after myself, I survived darkness didn’t I?†Ashia said distressed. Kairi gave her a curious look, Ashia realised that she and Toru hadn’t told anyone about her being in darkness. She looked at Kairi worried hoping she wouldn’t bring it up; she didn’t feel like discussing it, instead Kairi just smiled.
“You can tell he cares deeply for you, you know.†Kairi said kindly. Ashia looked out at sea; she wanted to change the subject.
    “Where is Sora and Riku?â€
“They’re sleeping in...Those lazy bums†Kairi said laughing. Ashia smiled, she appreciated her friendship and felt guilty about being so jealous of her only a few weeks ago, even though she still liked Sora, a lot. Just then she saw Riku and Sora running along the beach.
“I won!†Riku yelled running up before Sora.
“Hey guys!†Kairi said turning, she put down the umbrella, since it had stopped raining.
Sora sat down in between Kairi and Ashia and Riku remained standing, they had only been talking for a couple minutes before they heard someone calling out to them, they all turned to see a girl running towards them, she had long hair white as snow, she looked a little older then Ashia, maybe 17. She had black short shorts and a black tee-shirt on and wore white runners.
“Hi there!†she said reaching them, she smiled at them. She was rather pretty, Ashia glanced at Riku and Sora; they were practically drooling over her.
“Hi I’m Kairi and this is Sora and Riku†Kairi said, Sora and Riku waved.
    “I’m Noriko†she smiled.
“I’m Ashia†Ashia shook Noriko’s hand, while shaking she felt an eerie feeling deep within, she shivered.
“I know who you are, Ashia. We’ve already met†She whispered to Ashia, her voice sinister. Ashia stared at her surprised.
“When?†she asked defensively, Noriko smirked but before she could reply, Kairi asked her something obviously not noticing the confrontation Noriko and Ashia just had.
“Have you lived here long?†Ashia heard Kairi ask Noriko. She felt dazed, she knew that she hadn’t met Noriko before but something in the back of her mind made her doubtful. She drifted in and out of the conversation, she was feeling dizzy and Noriko kept glaring at her. She turned away and stumbled a bit down the beach, she heard them calling to her but she didn’t turn back. She staggered further away, a figure kept obscuring her vision, it flashed in front of her and when she blinked it would disappear. She slowly recognized it, she concentrated hard; it was the figure from her dream!
“Fighting for the wrong side, aren’t we Ashia? Face it, you belong to darkness now!â€
She fell to the ground weak, she closed her eyes. Suddenly she felt arms wrap around her, it reminded her of when she first entered into darkness, when she was just about to slip away, someone grabbed onto her and held her tight, she try to remember his name but she couldn’t think.
“Ashia! Are you ok?†Sora said holding her.
“Ashia, wake up!†Kairi shook her gently. Ashia opened her eyes, everyone was crowded round with a worried expression on their faces, everyone except Noriko; she just smirked then turned and left. Ashia blinked, she looked around for her but she had disappeared. She started to feel a lot better now that she was gone.
“I’m fine guys!†Ashia tried to persuade them, “I just need some sleep, that’s all!â€
“Ok if you’re sure...†Sora examined her carefully, “I’ll take you home if you want.†Ashia nodded and Sora helped her up, placing her arm around his neck to steady her.
“I’ll be right back†Sora promised Kairi, she nodded obviously still concerned about Ashia. Then they turned and walked down the beach. This is nice Ashia thought; she didn’t mind being so close to the brunette as he took her home, she watched him closely, his eyes were as blue as the ocean, she smiled.
“What are you smiling at?†Sora asked inquisitively.
“Nothing†Ashia looked away turning bright red, she hoped he didn’t notice but if he did he didn’t say anything.
“Here we are†Sora announced, Ashia had been so preoccupied watching Sora that she hadn’t noticed that they had reached the shack.
    “I’ll be fine from here†Ashia said, “Thanksâ€
“No problem...well cya later!†Sora smiled and then ran back down the beach.
    “Toru?†Ashia called.
“Still mad at me?†He asked cautiously coming out of the shack.
    “I’m sorry†she mumbled.
“It’s my fault.†Toru said sitting down next to her, “I guess I just worry too much.â€
Ashia nodded, “What were you so worried about anyway?†Toru looked away not wanting to make eye contact,
“I guess I should explain, I mean you have a right to know...†he said gloomily.
“Please Toru?†Ashia pleaded softly. He took a deep breath and sighed,
“When you entered darkness...when the heartless attacked you, you should have lost your heart...†He said somber, Ashia frowned not knowing what to say.
“But your different†he looked at her, “You kept your heart, you remained exactly the same! The darkness didn’t affect you at all!â€
“Then why are you so worried, isn’t that a good thing.â€
“I came to help you that day because I couldn’t let them get a hold of you...â€
“Let who get a hold of me?†she asked confused.
“The organisation, a bunch of nobodies who lost their hearts, they could have used your power to try and obtain Kingdom Hearts...â€
    “Oh...†She whispered.
“But then I found out that Sora and Riku had defeated them when I was talking to them the other day, but I was still doubtful, they were a pretty powerful bunch of nobodies...†He said softly, “And who knows there might be others like them out there.â€
“What are you then?†Ashia said, “If Sora is a keyblade master and Kairi is a princess of heart, and there are nobodies somewhere trying to get Kingdom Hearts and I survived darkness, where do you stand in all of this?â€
“I...uh I lived in Radiant Garden when the door was opened, I was curious so when no-one was around, I went in through the door...then I finally ended up here ages later...†Toru trailed off. Ashia could sense he didn’t want to talk about it any further so she changed the subject.
“You are obviously very talented with your powers...so teach me!†Ashia said lifting a grain of sand in the air with her mind, Toru laughed,
    “Okay†he agreed.

    Chapter Nine: Clash & Crash

“Concentrate!†Toru urged, “Just use your imagination†Ashia studied the small puddle of water in front of her; it quivered then started to form into a small ball then it lifted into the air before it trembled and burst back onto the floor with a splat.
“You’re getting heaps better!†he encouraged her, she smiled her eyes shining.
“Hey Guys!†Kairi called, “That was so cool!†she said to Ashia.
“Thanks†Ashia grinned, “We were just about to come see youâ€
“Noriko is hanging down further with Sora and Riku; they’re giving her a quick tour, I said I’d come and find you two then meet them down at the pier.â€
“Let’s head over there then.†Toru said, walking away. He had grown to like the Keyblade masters and was curious to meet Noriko as well.
    “Yeah...†Ashia said hesitant.
“What’s wrong?†Toru and Kairi asked simultaneously,
“It’s Noriko...†she looked at her feet, “Something doesn’t seem right about that girlâ€
“You sensed that too!†Kairi said surprised, “I thought no-one else noticed...â€
Toru looked at them curiously, he hadn’t met Noriko before but Ashia had told him about her yesterday, “What is it?â€
“When we met she told me she already knew who I was...I think she is the mysterious figure from my dream, the one who told me that I belong in darkness.†Ashia bleakly explained.
“That’s absurd, why would you belong in darkness?†Kairi said reassuringly. Toro and Ashia glanced at each other uneasily.
“I was taken from my home by the heartless, they tried to steal my heart...that’s how I ended up here†Ashia looked away unsure how the princess would treat her now. Kairi took a moment to reply as if she was letting it all sink in.
“Silly!†Kairi slapped Ashia in the back of her head softly, “That’s not your fault; you didn’t choose to go into darkness,†she looked at Ashia closely, “You kept your heart though and you should be thankful of that†she said grinning.
Ashia saw Toru sigh with relief and relax around the red head.
“Thank you for understanding...†Ashia said quietly.
“Why wouldn’t I? Riku lived in darkness and we don’t treat him any different†Kairi laughed, hugging Ashia. “You’re such a good friend and I will always be there if you need me!â€
“Same here!†Toru said hugging Ashia as well.
“Guys!†They all turned around to see Riku running up to them, “Someone has challenged Sora to a fight! And it won’t be an easy fight too, the guy looks pretty tough†he said puffing from the run. They all looked at Riku for a moment then started running back towards the pier to see Sora. Ashia ran up first but stopped suddenly.
“Ashia!†Kairi shouted almost running into her. She noticed Ashia’s grave face, “Ashia what’s wrong?â€
Ashia felt like she was being ripped in two, her heart pounded. Sora stood facing a tall guy with short brown hair; Sora had a cut down his cheek. Their eyes locked not turning away from each other. Sora held up his keyblade and charged at the guy, he deflected the attack with his sword.
    “Michio!†Ashia ran forward.

    Chapter Ten: Starlight

    Toru grabbed Ashia’s arm.
“Be careful!†Toru whispered, she shook him off and ran in between Sora and his challenger,
    “Michio!†Ashia said shocked, “Michio!â€
    “Ashia?†he stared at her.
“Michio!†Ashia started crying, she ran forward throwing her arms around him. “What are you doing here?â€
Noriko stepped closer from the side lines, Ashia hadn’t noticed her until now, Kairi ran up to Sora whipping his face with a cloth and asking if he was alright
“Why are you just standing there?†Noriko yelled at Michio angrily, “finish them off!â€
“What’s going on?†Kairi shouted at Noriko.
Noriko glared at her, “Well if you must know†she said bitterly, “I brought Michio from his home town to help me seize her†she said pointing at Ashia coldly.
“What do you mean seize her?†Toru said standing in front of Ashia to protect her.
“I couldn’t take the waiting, unsure if you’d ever come back, I missed you so much, then when Noriko came to me and said she would take me to see you I agreed to come...†Michio said softly to Ashia.
“Michio...†she murmured. He turned back to Sora and ran at him, catching him off guard he knocked his keyblade out of his hand, it skidded across the ground where Noriko picked it up, Michio held his sword up to Sora’s throat.
“No!†Ashia screamed and ran at Michio but Noriko grabbed her, she struggled to get free but Noriko held her tightly.
“You changed Ashia! The Ashia I knew would be trying to come home but you kept her here!†Michio said. He pulled his sword back then thrust it at Sora. Ashia looked up to see Michio’s sword penetrate his cthrew Noriko off her and ran up to see Michio standing over Toru!
Ashia knelt beside him, she couldn’t breathe; she clung to him sobbing.
    “Why?†Sora said stunned.
“Because you can make a difference, you can protect her.†Toru replied running his hand softly across Ashia’s cheek, whipping away her tears.
    “You can’t die!†Ashia said hysterical.
“Remember the paopu fruit...I will always be with you...forever.†he whispered softly.
“No!†Ashia whimpered; she hugged him listening to his heart beat, tears pouring down her face. Time seemed to stop, she felt at peace listening to his heart beat but slowly it faded, she laid there not wanting to let go.
Sora called his keyblade from Noriko and slashed Michio, he began to fade. “Losing my heart was worth seeing you again.†He said to Ashia as he faded away.
“You took his heart!†Kairi shouted at Noriko accusingly. Noriko went to say something but stopped; she glared at Kairi then stepped through a portal and disappeared. Everyone looked around stunned still finding it hard to believe what had just happened,
“Ashia...†Sora spoke softly, breaking the silence. She didn’t respond she just clung to Toru, she had realised now all that he had done for her, she realised that deep down she truly loved him, she just hadn’t realised till it was too late. She sobbed quietly brushing her hands through his blond hair.
“Ashia...†Kairi rested her hand on Ashia’s back; she then gently tried to help her up but Ashia shook it off and gripped onto Toru tighter, refusing to let go.
Kairi went to help her up again when Riku stopped her, “Give her some time...†he said quietly.
    ====
Ashia watched the small bunch of flowers gather above the ground and float towards a patch of green grass that had just grown back; Ashia blinked and then they gently fell in front of a carved stone with the word Toru etched into the front. A month had past since Toru’s death but not a day went past when Ashia hadn’t thought of him, she whipped the tears from her eyes and turned and walked back towards the pier. No-one had seen Noriko since that day and she doubted that they would ever see her again. She took her time walking back to the pier; she walked slowly letting the warm sand swallow her toes as she went. She sat next to Kairi, Sora sat on the other side of her with Riku next to him. They all looked out over the sea, their feet dangling in the cool water. The sun glinted off the deep blue ocean as it set. It turned the sky a dim violet colour with highlights of soft pinks mixed in. A small fish scooted past her feet. The sun slipped beneath the horizon turning the sky dark. A single star glittered above in the night sky. It fell slowly through the dark clouds until it disappeared where the sun had just set. The sea seemed to glow for a brief second, the ripples reflecting the starlight. You could just make the silhouette of them sitting on the edge of the pier. One silhouette was slightly transparent, compared to the other four, the starlight shone right through him.
