Humans will kill themselves long before that, give it till we are older you will see this planet will kill itself. Probably over something such as religion, resources, land, or something so stupid that people will wonder why they died for the most useless cause ever. And on the point of this being possible...I really doubt stars don't expand as such stated, they burn out, or blow up.

I read a book called Time (science-fiction) and it was mind-blowing and all based on the future of mankind to the end of time. It worked with the future of us colonizing the galaxy, then as the stars start dying they created new stars at the edges of the galaxy. Then when there was only black holes left they farmed them for energy. Then they arranged the black holes around a super-massive black hole and still survived. Then when heat-death occured they spread their conciousness accross the sparse interstellar medium, conserving and hoarding what little energy they had by thinking the same thoughts over and over again (remembering) and not inputting any new data. Then it turned out that that was the wrong future, and the Carter Catastrophe (which is a real theory/equation) which predicts the end of humanity came true etc etc.

Basically there's not much point in thinking about the future, especially that far in the future, as there are far too many possibilities although all limited by the laws of physics.

Further reading on the Carter Catastrophe

As you can see it is rather sketchy and relies on a number of variables and can give many answers.

    Basically.....................STOP WORRYING!

    hehehe...

I've always believed december 21st 2012 will be the final day...why you may ask? do some research on the date, I'm sure it will come up somewhere

other than that though, saying thats not the date, I believe we will be able to get far far away by that time

I believe we will be dead before 5 billion years....

So why worry? Its not our problem XD

Well, IMO, that was just a date that most religions point to (mainly some Christian faith's) to show the end of the universal calender.

I wouldn't place any money on that date. Unless there's a meteor headed full force into Earth, we're not dying.

I am almost certain that I read somewhere that that date was predicted by the Aztecs. Although it says the world will end, it can also be interpreted as the world as we know it will end. Meaning the world may change beyond recognition but it may not necessarily be a bad thing.

The study of the end of world/humanity is called Eschatology. The thing is there are so many ways that humanity could end in the 5 billion years till the end of the Earth, the future doesn't bode well for us =/. But I'm not going to live past the next century (and there's certainly a lot that could happen to me in that time) I highly doubt I will live to see the end of humanity. But it would be pretty cool to see the end of things, make life a bit more interesting =D.

Really the way to increase the chances of humanity surviving is to colonise space and spread people out as far as possible so as to lower the risk of one event wiping out us all.

But then there is the question: Is surviving enough? I mean, if we found a way to survive past the Heat Death of the universe, would it be worth it? Humanity would be stagnated, nothing would ever change again. It then comes down to is the purpose in life simply to survive or is there more to it.

Lol I can't think of anything more >_>

You're both correct, it was predicted by Aztecs, and Mayans, and about that meteor...well, do some research on that too, cause you're actually fairly on the mark, I wasn't speaking religiously at all, I heard a meteor was gonna hit earth in 2012, I figure the mayans could have a fairly good chance of being correct...

They can't predict that the earth will end by a metorite striking the earth on 2012.

    *ahem*

Many believed a metorite was what killed the dinosaurs.

IF A METORITE MADE DINOSAURS EXTINT, WHY THE HELL ARE ALIGATORS AND CROCODILES STILL AROUND?

A metorite can't metophorically kill EVERYTHING on Earth, there is a chance many things will survive.

Because the meteorite or two meteorites were not the only cause. They brought about darkened skies and killed off many plants and such that such humongous creatures required. Also, analysis of the KT line shows that ferns grew where many plants were dying which is often a sign of great catastrophe because ferns are one of the heartiest plants in the wild and can grow distinctly often while others cannot. There were possibly dramatically overcast skies and a drop in temperature and the smaller creatures were able to withstand it, not requiring so much to survive off of. Also, another point that has been debated is that dinosaurs were on the way out any way, dying off prior to the meteorite in the New Mexico area so they may have well been going extinct any way by poor vegetation and other reasons to do with weather and environment changes. The meteorite was probably the coup de grace.

If it was big enough it would shatter the Earth maening the atmosphere would escape killing ALL life. Except maybe bacteria and other microscopic organisms.

It wouldn't have to be an asteroid, it could be a comet (far deadlier as they are hard to detect and travel much faster), a black hole (also very hard to detect and would probably wipe out the whole solar system if it got too close =/), a freak radiation wave/storm/cloud travelling through space (possibly caused by a supernova) and an array of other things.

Really the most dangerous thing is ourselves. Then there are natural environmental cycles which could kill us off, or we may not become extint until the end of the universe we (i.e. our generation) will probably never know.

Yes. All suns die eventually and ours is no different. Our generation and many more to come are safe.

Why not? Scientists predict all sorts of things years in advance...

Not even the galaxy will last forever let alone the Sun.

Yes, one day humans will cease to exist. The question is how long and what happens after that?

People go on about this invention and that being able to save us but in reality science can only go so far.

xD I don't care about the however so many years I'm going to live, why the h311 should I care about how long the earth lasts?

I think that global warming is there, but the majority of the reason the earth is heating up is because the earth is going through a cycle. Like I'm sure many people in this thread have said. Ice age was cold, now it's going through a hot cycle. Since this is natural, it obviously isn't going to desroy the world! xD

So, My theory about global warming rules out it destructing the world, but everyone's theory is different.

The sun might be expanding, but at a very slow rate. Like, a milimeter every million years. I don't know, this is all theory. No one really knows how this world is going to end, and I don't plan on giving it much thought.

Pretty much everyone knows that by now, no offense. still, it's weird that the universe works like that.
