Chapter 12

The next morning everyone gathered in an excited state. Breakfast had been a rushed affair and they waited for their orders. To their surprise Xigbar appeared and handed out their assignments. He wished them all good luck and waved goodbye as they entered the portals. This was the first time that they would be completely on their own. As each couple entered the portal they looked back. Nexitah and Xachmile were the first to go. They all but ran through into the darkness. Anniexo and Zexek followed, walking at a more sedate pace. Finally Xetherah left with the newcomer Kelyx. She had no idea what his element was or whether he could fight or not.

Nexitah and Xachmile came out of the portal into an exotic city. They appeared to be in a bazaar. All around were stalls that were still closed up. Soon the area would be packed with people. Xachmile wanted to know where they were so Nexitah looked in her notes. These notes had been her studies since she had joined the Organisation. So this was Agrabah. She knew that there were plenty of heartless here, but they had to avoid a local character called Aladdin. Xachmile had become so excited that she wondered whether the young matter manipulator would be more of a danger than help. Her own powers were still emerging. She remembered how Xemnas had commented about ‘another plant person’ with a sigh. The heartless were beginning to appear so the fighting would begin. These were not the lowest level and would be good training.

Anniexo and Zexek were the veterans of the junior group. Zexek had already fought heartless and the Keyblade Bearer. Anniexo was confident with her powers. The other end of the portal opened onto Twilight Town. Both walked out cautiously. The town was waking and everything was going well. With dawn however the dusks started to appear. Zexek summoned his scythe. The heartless poured forward and both nobodies fought with weapons and powers. This would be harder that they had first thought.

Xetherah looked at Kelyx and wandered through the portal. She had already summoned her broadsword and was ready to fight. Kelyx seemed unconcerned as he stepped through the portal behind her. Xetherah thought that he was overconfident. He said nothing but walked in an even measured stride. She wondered if he was scared and trying to cover this up. As they exited the portal Xetherah knew exactly where they were. As soon as she saw the buildings she recognised Hollow Bastion. The place was allegedly crawling with heartless. Kelyx unsheathed a katana and Xetherah mused that even his sword was flashy. He seemed quite and almost unfriendly. It wasn’t long however before the heartless appeared and both were fighting furiously. The ground shuddered and lifted under the heartless. Xetherah smiled. Kelyx was quiet but deadly. They ploughed through the heartless and soon the group was no more. Kelyx turned to her, smiled and thanked her for her help. It was the first thing that he has said to her.

Xachmile and Nexitah were not coping as well. The heartless were tough to beat and to make matters worse they realised that Aladdin liked to wander around the streets. They took to lurking in alleys and ambushing heartless. Taking them out one by one would be a long task though they had not been sent any targets to reach. Nexitah thought that this was all the better as they would not destroy anywhere near a large number at this rate. She wondered how the others were coping and hoped would do as badly as she and Xachmile were doing so they wouldn’t look so inept. They hid in the shadows and hoped that the day would be over soon so that they could then go back to the castle and safety.

Anniexo and Zexek were turning the hunt for heartless into a competition. They were both evenly matched so the number destroyed was important to them. As they played they systematically cleared the streets of dusks. Anniexo joked that she wanted to ride on the famous ghost train. Zexek was riding around on the tram and generally having a good time. Twilight Town had turned out to be a fun assignment. There were loads of alleys to explore and plenty of interesting things to see. Anniexo knew however that tomorrow might not be so easy. They were rostered to fight in each of the three places, changing round each day. What if they were in the easiest town? What if the others didn’t return? Zexek grinned to himself. If the other worlds were harder then he would rise to the challenge.

Xetherah and Kelyx watched the members of the Restoration Committee as they went about their business. This Committee was the enemy but the nobodies were instructed to have no contact with them. Xetherah was now trusting Kelyx. He fought bravely and could be relied on to stand and not run. They had even begun talking. Kelyx was easygoing and kind with a serious nature that never changed, but his gentle friendship was a pleasure. He listened to the conversation below them, taking in all the details and watching every move. Xetherah guessed that no details escaped him and that their report would be highly detailed. They had destroyed many heartless and neither had a scratch to show for it.

Time passed and soon they had to return to the portals. Xemnas was waiting for them. He informed them that after freshening up and eating they were to meet in the study and give their reports. The six juniors raced off to the shower, change and have dinner. Xaldin had cooked them a hearty meal. Everyone else had eaten and was in the common room. The juniors sat at one end of the huge table chatting about the events of the day. Anniexo and Xetherah noticed that the youngest two were quiet and subdued, which was unusual. Real combat had calmed them and the bubbly laughter was gone. Zexek and Kelyx were discussing how many heartless they had both destroyed and both complimented their partners on their fighting achievements.

After the meal was over they all waited outside the study for Xemnas, as instructed. The Superior called them in and demanded their reports. Kelyx stepped forward confidently and gave a highly detailed report that included all the information of the conversation between the Restoration Committee that they had managed to overhear. Xetherah noticed that Kelyx gave her a lot of credit and she spoke up and corrected that Kelyx had led the fighting. Next Zexek and Anniexo stepped forward. Their report was less detailed but equally as impressive. Xemnas smiled at both reports and the four nobodies were allowed to sit down. Finally Xachmile and Nexitah stepped forward. The other four felt sorry for them as they heard the final report. They had done badly and had spent a lot of time running for their lives. Xemnas looked angry. This was not what he wanted to hear. He sent all six to rest and hoped that the next day would bring three good reports.

The juniors joined the seniors in the common room. To their surprise they were given the couches and the remote control. Demyx hugged Anniexo and they sat together. The others dispersed leaving Anniexo, Xetherah and Kelyx. Sai’x entered and headed directly for Xetherah and they kissed and embraced, ignoring everyone else in the room. Kelyx seemed uncomfortable on his own so Xetherah sat in the centre of the second couch and motioned for Sai’x and Kelyx to sit either side of her. The five settled down to watch a film together. Kelyx realised that he had been accepted into the group and he was included in all the conversations. When the film ended Demyx began to sing and play. Everyone was enjoying the impromptu sing along. Xigbar joined in even though his voice was awful. Anniexo wished that he would leave them alone and shut up. She eventually snapped and told him how bad he was. The entire room went quiet and no one else answered Xigbar back. He would get revenge by playing all sorts of tricks on her. Xetherah shook her head from behind Xigbar and covered her eyes. At this point Zexek and Larxene entered the room, holding hands. Kelyx was surprised that the juniors and seniors were so familiar but said nothing. He was the newest member and still didn’t know a lot about what went on in the castle. He had a lot to learn.

All too soon they started to leave for bed. Kelyx went to his room, pleased that he was part of the group now. Poor Xachmile and Nexitah would have a rough day the next day. Xemnas expected them to do better and had made sure that they knew this. They all fell asleep quickly, dreaming of the heartless that they had destroyed.

In another part of the castle Xigbar collected all the things that he needed to teach Anniexo a lesson. She would not get away with insulting him, no one did. He chuckled as he sneaked around the castle.

Chapter 13

Anniexo woke the next morning with a sense of dread. She knew that Xigbar was out to get her. She checked the door carefully for booby traps, knowing full well revenge could come in any form. The door was clear so she grabbed her wash kit and towel, heading for the bathroom. As she arrived she noticed that a crowd had gathered and were stood in horrified silence. Xemnas was stood in a puddle with a look of outrage and a towel gripped in his white knuckled hand. He roared for Xigbar and eager hands pushed the offending Organisation member forward. It seemed that Xigbar had super-glued plastic food wrap over the toilet, just below the rim. Xemnas had flushed the toilet and the water had overflowed all over his feet. The trap had been set for Anniexo, who was usually the first in the bathroom, but this morning she had been beaten by Xemnas who was making an early start. Xigbar looked genuinely terrified and was silent as he realised that this time he had gone too far. Xemnas said nothing but pointed in the direction of the study and quite a few people cringed in sympathy for Xigbar. Anniexo noticed that Xetherah was watching in disbelief, while Sai’x put a comforting hand on her shoulder. Anniexo looked around for the others and realised that Nexitah was missing which was unusual. After Xemnas and the others had dispersed Anniexo went to question Xetherah about Nexitah though all she knew was that Nexitah had left the castle early.

Outside in the garden Nexitah was sat on a stone bench holding a red rose. She listened as Marluxia talked to her about the gardens and how he tended all the plants. He had noticed her when she had first arrived, but he had taken his time approaching her. A delicate flower should not be picked too soon. For all his fighting skills he seemed shy around other people and it had taken him a long time for him to admit to himself how much he liked her and to confront her with this. Marluxia sat on the bench next to her and spoke softly to her, telling her not to worry about the day to come. It seemed that he had done badly on his first assignments. He hugged Nexitah and kissed her, reassuring her that everything would be fine. Anniexo spotted them and smiled to herself but left them well alone.

Later a dry but still angry Xemnas ordered the juniors through the portals for their next mission to collect hearts. Nexitah sighed with relief as she and Xachmile appeared in Twilight Town as Anniexo and Zexek had already told them all the best places to go and where to avoid. The six juniors had swapped information so that no pair would be facing the unknown. For Nexitah and Xachmile this meant that they had a much easier time destroying the heartless. Zexek and Anniexo found themselves in Hollow Bastion and followed the instructions on being careful around the restoration Committee and where to eavesdrop on them. They even knew exactly what they looked like. The only couple that were uneasy were Kelyx and Xetherah as they had ended up in Agrabah with the least useful information. They were both on edge but had been given a very clear description of Aladdin and were able to avoid him as soon as they saw him.

At the end of the shift the three groups came back and reported on their progress. All three had done well and Xemnas smiled at them; the first time he had smiled all day. Xigbar was nowhere to be seen in the castle and they all knew that he was in real trouble with his last practical joke and apparently Xemnas still couldn’t see the funny side of the incident and Anniexo thought he never would. Surely he hadn’t condemned Xigbar to death? Marluxia grinned at Nexitah and informed them that there was no such luck and informed them not to feel sorry for Xigbar who had made it his life’s quest to make everyone’s life hell at some point. He was getting well overdue payback. He had to clean the dungeons and the sewers with his toothbrush until they sparkled. Xemnas was cruel at times. The six juniors felt sorry for Xigbar even if he did play bad practical jokes on them, as Xemnas could be so cold at times. Marluxia noticed Nexitah’s unhappiness and offered to take her on a private tour of the new section of the gardens. Marluxia had been working on the project alone and had not allowed anyone else to see his creation up to now.

Demyx was not so mature about the Xigbar situation and wanted to tease and annoy the punished senior to generally make his life hell. Anniexo got the feeling that the bad feeling between Demyx and Xigbar went back an awfully long time but she also guessed that Xemnas would be watching Xigbar like a hawk. She had found out the hard way that Xemnas had a spooky way of knowing exactly what everyone was doing and it seemed that he missed none of the details. As Sai’x was fond of saying, Xemnas made sure that everyone who deserved it received ‘maximum punishment’. Thinking about Sai’x made Anniexo wonder where he and Xetherah had disappeared. She could see Zexek in the common room with Larxene. She was talking in a fast, animated manner and Zexek seemed to be listening to every word with a look of horror on his face. Anniexo giggled as she wondered whether Zexek was horrified at the story or at Larxene. At least they had all pleased Xemnas today. The evening passed quietly and Anniexo relaxed with Demyx. As she left for her room she realised that she had not seen Xetherah or Sai’x all evening and she thought that they were probably stargazing together, having forgotten about the time. Anniexo would interrogate Xetherah tomorrow for gossip.

The next morning after breakfast the juniors gathered for their final trip through the portals and they waited with excitement. Anniexo realised that Xetherah was missing and to her surprise Roxas appeared and informed them that he would be taking Xetherah’s place at Xemnas’s instruction. Kelyx looked at him and nodded in understanding giving Anniexo the impression that he knew what was going on but wouldn’t or couldn’t talk about it. Xemnas had got to him first. Zexion entered the room and opened the portals sending them to their assigned destinations. When quizzed he smirked at them and whispered in a conspiratorial manner “can’t sayâ€. It seemed that he was enjoying holding back the information from them and letting them guess. They carried out their task with little enthusiasm, each wanting to be back in order to find out what was happening. They all arrived back that evening to the normal chaos. Xigbar was mopping floors, an apron with playful kittens printed on it over his cloak and a duster hanging out of his pocket. The juniors burst out laughing when they saw him and he brandished the dripping mop at them. Sai’x took their reports and nodded his congratulations to them. Smiling at Anniexo he suggested that they all relax in the common room before going to the evening meal. Xachmile and Roxas rushed off, hoping to play a game before the meal while the others followed more slowly. To their amazement Xetherah was already there, watching a film on the mail screen. Xachmile and Roxas groaned in disappointment, as it was the best screen for playing games. They slumped n the sofa and sulked. Anniexo ignored them and along with Nexitah, sat with Xetherah and asked her what she had been doing all day that meant she had been given permission to miss her tasks. She sat back and related the story.

A strange newcomer had been brought to the castle barely conscious and delirious. She had been helping Zexion to nurse him back to health. Xemnas himself had given the order and was hoping to come to an agreement with this stranger so that they could work together to rid the worlds of the Keyblade Bearer. Apparently he had a fearsome reputation and his coldness and cruelty were legendary. Xetherah had been chosen as she had some nursing skills and previous experience. She was assigned to the task until the stranger was fit enough not to need any help and support. Little information had been given about him other than he had been rescued from one of the restoration committee members called Cloud and that he was also known as the One Winged Angel. Anniexo went pale as she had heard that name before and it was always linked with death. Xemnas might as well have made a pact with the devil himself. Even those walking in darkness feared the name and he was in the castle be invitation. Had Xemnas lost his grip on reality? The name Sephiroth would surely haunt their nightmares.
