How come in all of the main final fantasy games up to 10 you could name the protagonist, but when 12 came out they stopped that? Is it because they decided to have set names for the characters so the script would stay exactly the way they wanted? Or something else? I guess X-2 didn't since it already had set up the characters in X, so it wouldn't have been right to just completely rename everyone, but it just seems strange to break something off like that after so long. And they even had canon names for all the characters as well in the other games, but you could still put whatever you wanted (within reason)
Basically It's only really evident in FFX because it's the only one with voice acting, but you do notice at some points that the characters are never able to call Tidus by name. I think there's also an argument to be made for the narrative of the game -- characters can be developed as much through their internal struggles as by other character's reactions to them, which you're limited in when you can't call the character by name. In addition, though this doesn't really affect many of the Final Fantasy games, allowing the player to name the player character encourages them to make the PC a self-insert -- think Pokemon, where you usually name the character after yourself: it's like you are the player character. While that's a really interesting storytelling device, it's more common to have a set role that the character fills and allow the narrative to control the character rather than the player.
I've always had this thought that they could have two scripts. If you decide to keep the default names, the script would run as usual. If you rename the characters, then everyone else just refers to you as "Hey you" like in X.
Really the only way around it is to give the player character a title Commander Shepard. The Dragon whatever from Skyrim Gets increasingly awkward over time
Shep always felt natural to me, tbh I have completely forgotten what I named my Shep. Probably just left her at the default (Jane?)
They actually call attention to it in the third game, there's a cutscene where Shepard asks someone to call him/her by their first name, and they refuse But I think an easy example for how awkward it can get is in FFX, where Auron refers to Tidus as "new kid" for no reason
Actually I can, and I would rather not have that occur to me. Especially if someone ends up being a d*** and names the characters something inappropriate. It already happens enough in FF
Let's leave that job to persona...I already have enough trouble when it comes to choosing my own name I wanna use in a game that allows you to do this B| though I always end up going with the "canon" name..
