I have this one friend, and once I saw her put 'xD' on her homework. I said "Girl, you can't put that on your homework. It's stupid and only meant for the computer. It's kinda immature to be putting that on your homework..." and she just got upset and said "Well I don't care, and I can do what I want."

People don't realize these days what they're doing either... I have another ex-friend who comes in our class room and puts "Hey there ^.^". It looks very very [I cannot emphasise [sp?] this enough] stupid. It seems so immature since it was only meant as 'text talk' and is now used on homework.

I have to admit, I have put smiles on homework or letters [which is okay] once in a great while, but I don't put it on everything, and I only do when I believ is necessary. And my teachers do it too. BUT, I would NEVER ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever EVER put it on a test or essay. EVER. I'd just put "Kill Me Now" along with it if I did that.

Jeez, this 'lolspeak' crap is really messing up youth's lives, let alone our generation. It's not a bad thing when it comes to using it on the computer, but you can't object, in reality, we can't be using this stuff. If we continue, our "sentence" maybe even punctuation will die out. Just think about it that way...

I use text talk when talking to friends via messenger and talking on forums and such, but I've NEVER put it on an important paper because it is really immature. I even use abbreviations like "idk" "lolz" "lol" "omg" But to put it on a paper...I feel like it will lower my IQ a bit...

Text talk should not be used in an educational classroom or on homework. If I was a teacher, I would never accept that.

They're not "unnecessary" letters, because it's how the damn words are spelled.

But that's the reason, they are. It's the english language it's just the way you say the word.

There is a time a place for LOLspeak and that is the internet. A way in which I makes talking to friends easier and for humour purposes. In a real life situation it just shows laziness and it not professional. You get a job to work, you go to school to learn, using it is disrespect and shows a lack of care.

The English language is made up of a variety of different languages and so the spellings can be difficult, but a grasp of these and their correct usage shows employers and seniors that you have both studied the language and take care with your typing. I use LOLspeak on the Internet when it is suitable but when outside this I take care as not only is good English important for school and jobs, but not many senior people & Silver Surfers can understand LOLspeak!

    *facepalm* KMN...

I personally have no problem with LOLspeak, but it's got a time and place for it, and that is the internet. LOLspeak away in your little IMs and text messages and posts, but school is LAST place where LOLspeak should come into place. School is a place for learning, and there's not point in taking an English class where you write your papers in LOLspeak rather than proper English. Might as well then cancel the English courses then. What's the point of it if students aren't really learning the language for what it is.
Yeah, yeah, it's the language “revolution”, but seriously. . . it'd be nice to see LOLspeak stay where it belongs. If I was an English teacher, then I'd have definitely have cried the day I saw, “When President Abe Lincoln was gatted, the whole country was :(, even though some in the South must have been :).” on a research paper or an essay. I fear for this generation, I really do, and I hate myself every time when I find my teacher circling things like “ppl”, “ur” or “y” in my papers or I say “el oh el” or “oh em gee” to one of my friends during my chats. Not only is the LOLspeak going into writings, but it's also coming into my speech. I agree with that dude guy all the way that this LOLspeak has become a problem.
There's nothing wrong with it, as long as it stays in its place, in the internet and cell phones.

Whoa. That's sad. I mean, I do that sometimes but I have NEVER transferred it to school work or anything. That's just...wow. Not good.

As a creative writer who has dedicated hours to working on language and structure abilities...I'm shocked by those statistics. I mean, of course I use chatspeak...when I'm texting. I would never use the same grammar or abbreviations (such as lol or omg) in a high school essay or on a test. If you don't want to mix the two up, you only have to use your common sense. It's just laziness. Of course, I can't misspell anything even when I'm texting, but that's probably because I'm such a perfectionist. Oh, and emoticons? Are you kidding? No, today's society isn't exactly helping, and that whole cat caption thing wasn't even close to cute (the alternate spellings for the words were atrocious), but teenagers are smart enough to differentiate between casual chatting and formal written assignments. I agree with the article, but I think the linguistically challenged teens are to blame for sheer laziness.

LOLspeak gets on my nerves personally. I mean come one, how difficult is it to type out the damn word? Not very.

Sure I know its going to happen on the internet, because it originated on the internet. But can't it just stay there? When I'm actually talking to someone face-to-face, I really don't want to say a funny joke and hear them say LOL. It just....seems fake.

And the fact that students are getting away with using LOLspeak on papers and such is really ridiculous. I mean, if I was turning in an English term paper or something, I definitely wouldn't be using it. In English, you're supposed to show an understanding for reading and writing. By using LOLspeak, to me, it seems like you don't understand it at all.

But thats just all my opinion.
