I don't really see a problem with the websites and all. What I do see a problem with is that teachers are letting these kids get away with doing text talk in school papers and homework etc. I remember my dad telling me that whatever 'assignment' I handed in, or whatever project I did for serious, I had to put my name on it so it should be of quality so there's some pride there. This is what kids today don't seem to be told to any level and instead they are getting away with this and can even be encouraged.

So teachers should crack down and for those parents that always whine that their kids are doing nothing wrong, ignore them for a change. Let it actually go to court and counter sue the parents who are clearly neglecting their kids on the notion they think it's expressing 'individuality'. Hard to express individuality when -everyone- is doing it, isn't it? Parents aren't doing their jobs here by helping set some guidelines.

I don't think lolspeak in itself is bad as I sometimes get a laugh out of it, but I certainly wouldn't use it in official things that I put my name on that reflect me. 30 years down the line I don't want to look back and say 'look! I did this report and got away with using lolspeak language!' It just takes away from the credibility of an author when you see that they apparently can't write sentences correctly or choose the short cut simply to express themselves and get attention.

It's cute, but it has its place on some forums, chats, phones, letters to friends etc. It's an informal version of speech. Homework, essays, literary reports, business stuff etc, these are meant to be formal and that is perhaps what parents need to start teaching kids. The difference between formal work and informal stuff. It's the same way with dress appearance. You won't wear certain attire to a work function but you wouldn't wear work clothes chatting with friends on the street either. If there is a line set by parents and teachers, it would greatly help children because even according to that poll he said 86% of children -do- care and think good writing is essential. So, in the end, they just need a line to help them establish what is 'formal' and what is not. They already have the will.

I'm waiting to see a resume written in LOLspeak. I know that person won't get hired. But seriously, if these kids are writing reports and essays in LOLspeak, what's to say they won't grow into adults who write their resumes in LOLspeak?

It will be a sad day.

You hear that it schools alot. Kids talking to each others, using LOL here and there. But in classes, students are usually putting smily faces on important reports to give teachers for possibly 30% of their grade. It's like kids don't really care about grammar anymore.

In my school, I would always write works with good gramar, punctuation, the works. Every student in my class, though, think that 'I'm a nerd' for using real words. O.o At that age, people should be learning how to use English correctly, not make up our own.

Oh Repliku, you and your informed and well-thought arguments. What would we do without you? :D

I can't believe that people ACTUALLY used chatspeak in the real world! The only way I have been CLOSE to using that is when I'm with my friend and I shorten Oh My God to something like omigod. Really, people who use chatspeak in real life need to get a grip and have a reality check. And I think that the ICanHasCheezburger dig was a low blow. It's a comedy site, and not intended to teach children to use chatspeak. I love ICanHasCheezburger, and I'm great at writing despite my age.

Our world is changing slowly. Everyday passes and more words are made to express ourselves. I think tis is how nature should be working.

This isn't "expressing" anything, it's just being ignorant and showing disrespect for the language and the people around you reading what you write.

I didn't say anything to imply the authoress of the column wouldn't get hired. I was putting forth a hypothetical situation about what would happen if one of these users of LOLspeak in their school reports had the same thought process when writing their resume.

Since essentially the thought process is 'ROFL I don't care if I fail this assignment.' The thought process then would be: 'ROFL I don't care if I don't get hired.'

And please use proper sentence structure? You're setting my grammar Nazi off rather fiercely.

Psh, that article is so melodramatic. Language is always changing, but saying 'the sentence is dead' is a huge overstatement. Everyone knows lolcats is a website for humour. Gossip Girl's ad campaign fits in with the show's content.

If anything, lolspeak is a fad that will be left behind eventually.

Why do you all see this as a bad thing? It's just the evolution of language, whether it becomes bigger or smaller. Stop living in the past and embrace the future. You can't stop it.

HA! that's sounds like a whole bad guy monolouge thing... "embrace the future... my future! ahahahaha"

no... "proper" english will always be the "proper" way to speak... even if everyone uses LOL and ROFL and ect. you will never get rid of the fact that it isn't "proper"

repeats: if the english we use in our paper's is called "proper" by our teacher's than it is the best
