This was a classic for me that unfortunately died a short time after the dreamcast came out.I haven't played much of the new games, so bear with me: What do you prefer? The old games of speed and linearity with a ton of speed and fast moving action fighting against Robotnik, but with less storyline and less characters? Or the new games, with more story, more characters, and more things going on? Again, I grew up with the classics. While everyone was talking about Mario, I sat down with my Genesis and played Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic and Knuckles. I even tried often (and failed) to beat Sonic the Hedgehog 2, always getting beat at the airship. There's something charming about the game. I tried Sonic Heroes and really didn't find it appealing to me. Whether it was the 3D, the way the controls worked or something else, I never really got into it. The Dreamcast was way above my budget at the time so I didn't even bother trying to keep involved, instead opting for other consoles. Later on, I found myself excited for Sonic the Hedgehog 2006, and well... That was DOA before I could even blink. I have heard of other games coming out, but I never saw any games that have made me as excited as the original games.
I'm actually excited for the new Sonic game coming out on the 3DS. It's got a good mix of old and new, and has that kind of twist on it like Galaxy was for Mario. I do prefer the older titles, but I'd like to see a decent 3D one, so this one has me feeling hopeful for the series.
I prefer the old games. Main reason being the 2d style as opposed to the 3D games we keep getting now. I always felt Sonic was best as a 2D game series. That's not to say I don't like the 3D games though. Some, like Sa2 and Unleashed, are in my favorites list. I am interested in pretty much every Sonic game that gets announced though.
I like all of them. The 2D Games were my gateway, and some 3D games DO fall short of expectations, but they aren't horrible. Yes, you might think me crazy for including Sonic '06 in that, but it's by all means not a bad game, just a glitchy one that the fans demanded so badly Sega didn't even play test it. It's not THEIR fault it was wanted for Sonic's 15th, but I honestly believe they should have planned a game for Sonic's 15th. Anyway, my favorite Sonic games are; Sonic Unleashed, Sonic Colors, Sonic Generations, Shadow the Hedgehog, and Sonic 3&Knuckles. Sonic Generations was fantastic, and proved that as long as Sega isn't rushed to create the ext part of the story, they can make something absolutely fantastic. I really don't understand why everyone gets tired of the series after Adventure 2. The game doesn't even have proper closure to be somewhere the series can end or be left. Sonic is still trying to stop Eggman, and he will be for a long time.
OK THIS IS THE ONE I WAS WAITING FOR YO ARRIGHT FIRST OFF: EVERYONE WHO THINKS SONIC CAN'T WORK IN 3D NEEDS TO GET THEIR HEAD OUT OF THEIR TUCHUS BECAUSE SA2 WAS GODLIKE IN EVERY RESPECT "But Nova the models look awful, and the cutscenes are all stilted, and there are glitches everywhe-" EVERY. RESPECT. NOT TO MENTION CLASSIC SONIC WAS FULL OF PITFALLS AND SPIKES YOU COULDN'T POSSIBLY SEE COMING WHICH WERE OBVIOUSLY PUT THERE TO PAD THE GAME LENGTH BECAUSE GENERATIONS IS JUST AS LONG AS ANY GENESIS GAME BUT YOU CAN FINISH IT IN A DAY, KNOW WHY? BECAUSE IT WARNS YOU WHEN THAT F#♫%♥♂& 50-FOOT LEAP OF FAITH IS FATAL OR NOT ALSO SONIC HEROES WASN'T THAT BAD I MEAN YEAH SOME OF THE LEVELS SUCKED BUT AT LEAST WE STILL HAD DAVID HUMPHREY I THINK EVERYONE AFTER HIM IS THE FAKE HEDGEHOG AROUND HERE HELL EVEN STH HAD A KICKIN' SOUNDTRACK WHICH IS WAY MORE ENJOYABLE WHEN YOU DON'T HAVE TO PLAY THE GAME Nothing can excuse S'06 not even my impassioned capslock ALTHOUGH HONESTLY I LIKED MEPHILES HIS THEMES WERE COOL AND DAN GREEN DOES A GREAT EVIL LAUGH *cough* Arright enough yelling Yeah uh I like them both. I think people give the early games way too much credit, but I also hated the series for a time. Thankfully that time is passing, and I'm looking forward to Sonic Team's joint work with Nintendo, it's already looking pretty stellar. Get hype 4 Sonic Galaxy.
i like the old games; the old games had actually challenges; unlike games like sonic generation, the old sonic games don't just run all the time, they find items and solve puzzles, plus you get to play with people like tails and knuckles, but game these day you only play as sonic, so im voting for old games and hope that they make a sonic DX remake on the wii u
Excuse me, but have you played Sonic Generations? Short =/= not a challenge. Sonic Generations had enough challenge in the form of basically everything. Instead of going through two acts that link, you go through two separate ones, prompting you to try out something different.
Okay, favorite series time, baby! Let me just start by saying...Pretty much everything Nova said. Honestly, I don't see what all the hate is about towards the 3D Sonic games. SA1 was pretty awesome, and SA2 was just HNNNNNGH. Heroes was pretty cool too, imo, I loved a lot of it's music (dat Team Chaotix theme). Shadow was...Okay gameplay-wise in my opinion. I didn't think it was the worst thing evar but I've certainly played better from 3D Sonic games. And then we have...IT. Some have tried to tell me it's not as bad as some people make it out to be. I tell them to try playing it without a bag of weed. Then we have Unleashed, which was good as Normal Sonic and so-so as the Werehog. Colors was friggin' awesome, and Generations made me feel like a wee boy again. Sonic: Lost World is looking fan-freakin'-tastic as well. If I didn't already have a WiiU, I'd probably get one for that game alone. I don't think the classics need much explanation. They're fast-paced and fun, with plenty of replay value if you're like me and want to master the levels to the point of being able to speed-run them. Also, Sonic 3 & Knuckles is a must-play. Period. Go play it. Now. In conclusion, I like both styles, but the fact that Sonic 3 & Knuckles is a part of the Classic titles is what puts them a tad higher than the 3D games on my personal favorites list.
Classic Sonic is kinda junk. It's just a run of the mill platformer, but the level design makes it so going fast isn't ever a good idea until you memorize the level on your fourth playthrough and 100th post on Sonic Retro. That said, I lean towards 3D Sonic: Sonic Adventure? Hellz yes. SA2? Fantastic and easy to play no matter what Egofaptor says. Sonic Heroes? One of the most fun platformers I've played and the epitome of 3D Sonic GAME PLAY. Now, take into account current consoles. Sonic 4 is a much more playable Sonic (sorry Genesis era fans, it's streamlined and it works) and 3D Sonic is terrible to the point Sonic Colors, a 3D Sonic game, was 95% in 2D (with a horrid camera). Sonic Generations, you say? The 3D gameplay is seriously a racing game minus other drivers, but it was pretty cool.
