    But how do those gem things work? Is it by rep or posts? I'm sorry, I should know this by now, but I'm really confused over it.

    By gems Im assuming you mean the green/red bars below your location, member number etc.

    They are rep bars. The more rep, the more "gems" on the bar.

    Erm, I hope this isnt considered talking about actual rep points or I'll be shunned. Shuuuuuunnnnned.

    It's rep. For every 100 rep, you get another gem. Though, I think after a certain amount of rep, you get one for every 200.
