Okay guys, how long can I do this before it kills me?

It's the holidays, and I'm toying with the idea of staying awake for multiple days in a row, just to see what will happen. I want to know how long I have before I start to suffer badly from sleep deprivation, and what threshold I shouldn't cross.

It'd also be good to know if using caffeine as an aid is a bad idea.

First day so far, and the only thing worth noting is how I nodded off to sleep for a few seconds while walking on the footpath.

    Don't.
There's a threshold after a few days that you do not cross.
There's a man that did it on the radio for what...five-ish days or seven, and he suffered permanent brain damage.

    ****'s crazy.
Caffine will mess you up, too. Hallucinations eventually. (self-experience)

Interested in experiencing the hallucinations, not so interested in getting the permanent brain damage (which is exactly why I started the thread).

So how long do I have to experiment with lack of sleep? Three days at most? Will moderate amounts of caffeine do anything bad, or am I safe to play around with it?

I wouldn't go past two or three days. If you start seeing things, go to bed. Immediately.
What's your idea of a moderate amount of caffeine?
A couple cups of coffee a day? Probably nothing bad at all.
Drink coffee practically all day like I did and **** gets real. D:

Sounds promising. So for it to work out interestingly, drink a lot of coffee, and only stay up for three days, maximum.

    Yep.
    Still, though.
Don't push yourself. It's serious business-your brain needs sleep to function well, and it can start shutting down without it.

So what sort of stuff can I expect to see?

    Mainly corner-of-your-vision things.
You'll probably think your house is haunted.
I saw figures walking in the corners of my vision, things moving behind me when I saw my reflection in a blank computer, stuff like that.
Not giant pink elephants walking across the room.
    It can get rather scary.

This sounds very promising indeed. Time to go and get a cup of coffee.

How do you recommend avoiding micro-sleeps, or full-on naps?

    Do ****.
I made four paintings in my time when I was awake. Play a video game, do art(preferably some where you have to stand). Do not exercize. While it seems like it's a good idea it's a terrible one-you'll feel ass-tired right after. Don't read, either. Easy to get you to fall asleep.
Don't fool yourself by saying 'I'll just sit down for a bit, rest my eyes. I won't sleep.'
    You will.

I tried this for a day. **** got real quick. I was only ten but I started seeing the toon Links pressing a button and a train exploding. My mother told me I also spoke a lot of gibberish. Thats why I don't drink soda after 2:00 AM anymore.

I don't wanna butt in or anything, but I'm kind of worried about this--I mean, if I were you, I wouldn't try, but of course, it's up to you.

...This is purely for fun, huh?

And to stay awake, play those REALLY FRUSTRATING GAMES that somehow make you competitive to the point that you just want to throw the controller across the room. With your TV screen and console of choice. Though I wouldn't suggest playing too long; you could strain your eyes too much...

Why the hell would you do that?

While on the final year of high school i had to read for finals, university exams to be correct, and hadn't slept for four days in a row. I didn't felt tired at all the first two days and i was wondering why everyone was saying that it was tiring to stay up all night -heck, i didn't even had to drink coffee- but after the third night i started to feel weird, seeing things. Dude you don't want that, trust me. Unless you like seeing black coated people appearing out of nowhere in your living room.

But if you insist on doing this, instead of coffee, try energy drinks, you will feel as possessed, tired but full of energy. It sucks to be honest...

Energy drinks will make it worse. Instead of making yourself sick from sleep deprivation why not enjoy sleep? It's delicious!

What ghosts and stuff are you talking about? You're just going to feel like you're drunk and pass out after a couple of days, then wake up at the hospital.

    Let's see; a friend of mine has had several visions before of insects crawling all over his body, and one pretty cool one of twelve mice climbing onto his lap and singing Christmas carols. Myself, when it gets to the summer and I stay up late, I keep seeing the fan in the corner and it's starting up its blades and trying to eat me. ;A;

    The key difference between what we did and what you're trying to do: we were both just tired after one day. I have no idea what kind of stuff I'd see after multiple days awake. 0A0;;

Hmm. I could get into the whole lucid-dreaming thing. It could work out. The last time I tried, it took took much effort though.

If you're seriously going to do this, I wanna see videos of it. This will be **** funny.

But seriously, you're gonna **** yourself up doing this. I stayed up for, I think it was close to 36 hours and I almost fainted. The paranoia is just a random thing that happens. I think. Don't quote me. Also, my sleep pattern has been totally bogus since I did this. Sleep at 5 AM, up at 3 PM almost every day.
