when I lightly tap the black circled areas, it makes a loud clicking noise and moves a bit (and this is not pressing in the <</ or menu buttons)
when I lightly tap the red circled areas, it stays put and makes no noise.
iThink the clickwheel is loose, which could lead to other problems, like the clickwheel becoming unresponsive or the buttons not working.
anyone else ever had a loose clickwheel? what happened?

    lol.

Anyway, it does awfully sound like a faulty part of the ipod. I would suggest sending it back to apple for repairs, but that depends if your ipod is covered by warranty(otherwise I believe you will be charged).

I have it covered by Bestbuy Warranty so if I bring it there they'll give me a new one or let me upgrade to a different iPod, so I might do that (this is my second replacement, the first one was a silver 3rd gen nano, which froze and erased data, the second was the same kind, but the headphones wore out which I replaced with this.) I wonder if they have a limit on replacements.
    I'll read the warranty terms.
