The Avengers is my least favorite of the Marvel movies. I didn't find it very enjoyable. It didn't seem to have much going on with the characters, and the story was minimal. Everything is buildup to the last big action scene which is like half of the movie, and has no real payoff within the movie itself. It's not till Iron Man 3 where anything that happens in the movie matters at all. The Avengers works well for the continuity but doesn't do much for it to be worthwhile on its own. (for me)

I think that it's a good movie, but not as good as the other Marvel movies.

I feel a little awkward asking this, but you thought other Marvel movies did better with anything? I thought the X-men films were pretty much painfully bad at doing characters and had really run of the mill film plots barring First Class. Iron Man? Charming but still kind of feeble. Thor? Never saw it because no one I know is willing to watch it again. The Hulk? Eh, I actually don't like the Hulk to begin with. Captain America? Actually, I really liked this one, it was pretty fun. Spiderman? Very much just a series of action movies and came with the flaws you'd expect.

I understand what you mean with not a lot happening in Avengers storywise, because it was very episodic and self contained. In the grander scheme of things very little happened. But the characters is where I'm confused, I thought they did a pretty good job establishing every character and showing who they were and where they stood. People didn't change over the course of the movie very much, I liked that they did that because in all honesty, there would have been little point in changing them at all. So... where's the gripe, I guess?

Ah, when posting that I wasn't thinking about X-Men. It's been a very long time since I've seen the X-Men films, so I hardly remember anything at all about them, and since I don't like X-Men at all I would put Avengers above those movies as far as my enjoyment goes (except for First Class which was amazing). Iron Man does very well until the end where they throw away everything thoughtful just to have a big action scene. I thought Thor did very well with its story and characters as well. It's very basic character stuff, but it does it very effectively and it's very enjoyable to watch. I would give it a chance if I were you. I've never seen the 2003 Hulk, but The Incredible Hulk from 2008 also did a good job, though I won't be watching it any time soon because Hulk's not my thing. Captain America isn't my thing either, but I do acknowledge that it does what it does well. Spider-Man 2 is great for the most part. Thinking about it now, everything around Mary Jane is the only real problem with that movie. I could never see the other two again and I would be perfectly fine (well maybe not 1 if only for the nostalgia).

I suppose they did do a good job of establishing the characters, but they didn't change like I would have expected them too. Maybe that's a fault on my part for having expectations that I shouldn't have, but when I rewatched it knowing what I was getting into I couldn't help but have the same problem that I did when I originally watched it. I just didn't care about hardly anything that was going on.

Well, it was nice to see something different for a change. At least they did something productive with all the remakes they've been doing. Using those actors to cast the Avengers was pretty cool.

At least The Avengers isn't a beat down worn out completely overused idea.

X-Men 3 and Wolverine: Origins are objectionably terrible. Fantastic Four sucked and its sequel was somehow even worse. The Hulk was incredible only in how it managed to make a story about a giant green rage beast boring as hell. Ghost Rider was played by Nicholas Cage...

Now as for the Avengers-related films: Thor's biggest battle was in the first quarter of the film and none of the characters were memorable except Thor and Loki. The Incredible Hulk was a God-send after the first film but suffered from ultimately having a throw-away plot with little weight. Iron Man 1 was alright, 2 was basically a really-long Avengers trailer, 3 was good but very divisive (on a certain character change I'm still torn on.) Captain America was honestly the best character-driven film followed by Iron Man.

Avengers particularly is the best Marvel film, to me, because of how well it captures every character in the film better than many of their own movies: Bruce Banner is extra meek and knowledgeable, Tony Stark is the rich asshole with an ego but a heart underneath his guise, Thor is a tough guy in an alien place to him with a soft spot wanting to bring his brother back from his own evil mind, Steve Rogers is the team-player trying to pull together ultimately selfish superhumans (besides Tony obviously), and Loki is a pathetic trickster who believes himself a deity due to the power we doesn't even understand fully. Not only is this great to see in the individual characters, but the way they interact with each other, my favorite being just how polar opposite Tony and Steve are initially before they learn to understand and respect each other. I haven't even touched on Hawkeye, Black Widow, Nick Fury, or Phil Coulson. Every character in this film feels really unique compared to each other. As someone who struggled with this in a college scriptwriting class, Avengers is a simple example of how to write an interesting cast while developing four at the same time, as well as how to show really interesting conflicts between said characters. I can't say anything of this for Les Mis outside of maybe Javert and Jean...and even that was undone by the fact that the prisoner Javert's held this grudge against is RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIS FACE IN THE MOST OBVIOUS WAY.

The story actually did a lot of things in the time it had: an alien engine stolen, a military base destroyed, a band (composed of a God, a superhuman, a bipolar behemoth, and a technical genius) struggling with the ideals of each other and then figuring out how to work together, a city on Earth invaded by a seemingly unstoppable alien army, an Asgardian trickster sent back to his own realm, and the attention of a mad titan turned to our world...more happens in this film than half of the movies I've mentioned (want to see examples in nothing substantial happening for way too long? The Hulk, Thor, and Iron Man 2).

I never said it wouldn't be a good movie. I love remakes, because the better the graphics the more I'll love the movie. I'm simply saying that a lot of these are overused titles. Sure, they changed the name but it's generally gonna be the same idea. Meh, I liked The Green Lantern, The Avengers, and Tron (I know Tron isn't Marvel, but it's a good example for stunning graphics)

I forgot to talk about Spider-Man. It's really simple.

    Spider-Man 2 >>>>>>>>>> Spider-Man 1 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Spider-Man 3 >The Amazing Spider-Man

...please, just...no...even one of my best friends who's a massive Green Lantern fan loathes that terrible disgrace on the Lantern Corps. name.

    Objectively*

    Again

    Mark fucking Ruffalo

    "His first name is Agent."

"Uh, raise the mizzen-mast. Jib the topsails. That man is playing Galaga! Thought we wouldn't notice. But we did."

"I'm sorry, Nick - what were you lying?"

"Well, you know, performance issues... Not uncommon. One out of five-"

Joss Whedon + Robert Downey Jr. is actually the most immaculate combination ever to exist

"We are not your enemies, Banner! Try to think!"

Thor has just met Hulk less than an hour ago

has only seen him transform once

    and calls him Banner throughout

LIFELONG FRIENDS CALL HIM A MONSTER WHEN HE HULKS OUT

AND THIS STRANGER FROM ASGARD SEES THE HUMANITY IN HIM, REFUSES TO GIVE UP ON HIM

IF YOU DON'T LIKE AVENGERS YOU'RE FUCKING WRONG

The trouble is Steve gets so much development in his own movie that there's kinda none left for Avengers, so he ends up being the most static

Then again that actually suits him perfectly, being the team's pillar and all

THEY DIDN'T EVEN CAST NATHAN FILLION

HE ACTUALLY PLAYED HAL JORDAN ONCE AND IT WAS FUCKING PERFECT

Meh, I think Ryan Reynolds is hot. If it wasn't for getting to see him in spandex it wouldn't be as good a movie.

Woah woah Woah . . . Loki is hot.

Just now seeing the typos I had in my Avengerrant...sorry.

    How to write bros.

Except that he's got garbage CGI all over him that could be done better by people with a quarter or less of the budget they got to make that film.

You don't understand how pissed I am about that film really. It's only excelled by my hatred for Wolverine: Origins (although that had a sickass game)

I can already tell we wouldn't be able to go to the theater together. We have completely different tastes in movies. The Happening was a good movie, imo. And Marky Mark is ohmahgawd hot.

Mark is a good actor. Zooey is a good actor if not stale in her roles. The Happening utilizes neither of their talent. It constantly tries to make tension and suspense out of...nothing.

I meant as a person. Tom Hiddleston did an amazing job and Loki is one of my favorite characters because of how he just OWNS being a devilish trickster.
