I'm with freezing the earth. I loved that movie....

In all seriousness, this is gonna suck majorly. OK, I'm British, but if Obama goes through with this, then Mr Brown's gonna get the same idea in his thick skull, or worse, if David Cameron comes to power... *shivers* Lucky I have only a couple years left.

But adding more time to the school day will NEVER help. It will want kids to rebel for the time they (quite frankly) deserve.

Whats the whole point of cutting summer?
All it does is give us more work and like half of the kids wont even pay attention. If you ask me it doesnt really matter how much days we have left its not like everyone is going to listen and do the work. I mean we have advanced over the years but that doesnt mean that we dont have breaks and limits. Plus what would we do after the yearly test comes (for me its fcat). What you want to do with your future is your problem but getting more school days isnt going to have a big difference.

Great, let's get more sub-par teaching to our kids.

The way I see it, it isn't the amount of time a person spends in the classroom that gets them the material adequately. It's the quality of the teacher as they are teaching that gets students to learn. I've had some teachers that are brilliant, intuitive teachers with great stories that stimulate the learning experience, other times I've had teachers that just put notes up on an over-head and lecture. Then give us some homework and expect us to teach ourselves and figure things out for some parts. Sometimes the latter is a great method (for some students), but the majority of people I've met prefer the prior.

Again, we should focus on how the teachers teach, not on how much time is spent on the material.

Plus, how is Obama going to figure out how certain schools with financial problems are going to manage all the extra hours for teachers? That's a lot of money he's gonna have to invent out of thin air.

Students would focus less in class n' goof 'round more if they have less leisure time, or worse, dog school (it means skip school).

    It would surely fail.

How about just improving the education system so students can learn more in less time?

I agree with Obama on this. Students need to spend more time in class, but not in longer days, but a longer year. But the thing still is, the teachers, just as Darky said. More time in school isn't going to do anything if the teachers suck. My high school had teachers who didn't even have a degree in the subjects they taught. It was also overcrowded with about 500-600 students more than it was built for.
The school system in America needs to be revamped a lot more than adding more time. Higher standards for hiring teachers, more schools so there's no overcrowding, more extracurricular programs, a safer environment, and a way to ensure kids don't cut class.

Which is why adding more time to the year in general will help. Kids may deserve free time, but they also deserve education. So if one country antes up their school system, another country will get competitive and do the same? In the end of the competition, thel countries should (in theory) have smarter students.
The California State Department of Education's reports show an increase in reading test scores.
Yeah, there'd be students who won't listen, but there'd be students who will.

If Obama decides to follow through, I hope he doesn't stop there. More hours won't do crap without better teachers, programs, etc.

Meh that movie wasn't so good, the other recess movie was better. Recess was a great to show anyway.

Actually I wouldn't care what he did, I already have plans to move out of the country when I graduate and anyway even if he did it. I'm gonna go with eight graders and higher wouldn't be affected. It would take a long time, and a lot of money to make that change. So any kids in elementary school, have a nice non-summer.

Not good to increase spending in a weak economy.

Why does it seem like every time that man makes an announcement about anything, I end up hating him even more? Oh yea, because he's obviously not qualified to run the country. That's why I didn't vote for him. Kids have a hard enough time staying in school right now, and he wants to keep them there longer? How exactly is that going to solve our problem (if, indeed, we have a problem in the US)?

Has anyone heard of the education system in France crashing and burning? Their schools (or at least their equivelents of high schools) have 8 hour days. The one my friend when to when she was on exchange in France had school on Saturday morning. The kids aren't going haywire and ditching school, at least not more than in America, my friends says.

If Obama knows what's good for him, he'll lengthen the hours slowly; gradually adding an hour or half an hour a year or something like that.

If this happened to my school, I can guarentee you after a bit, it would ruin my perfect record because I would never have time to relax, and I would get so stressed I'd go insane.

Of course, I don't care what he does for the 2012-2013 school year.

    This.^

And all I wanted to add on

And its true, people have been saying that Americans are stupid, we're generally obese, we aren't as smart as the rest of the world, (for a while now too) but we're still America, and in general terms, we influence the world the most. Unless Obama sees that quality of schools going down the shithole within the next decade, I doubt this is changing much. I'm not saying its good we let America be stupid/not as smart as the rest of the world, but it seemed as though we've been doing just fine.

What we need is a better education system. Teachers get like $30,000 a year. 1 person can survive off of that... barely. Maybe if teachers had more of a motivation then they would teach better...

Also it has to do with the parents. They need to teach their kids how to sit down straight, stay awake, and not give the teacher a hard time. Seriously the kids today are totally disrespectful.

You can hardly blame the overall uneducated American stereotype on our school system. We learn plenty, and I know a bunch of people who have good heads on their shoulders, there are just lazy people here who don't take school seriously that give us a bad name. It's probably the same in other countries too.

I don't really mind cutting down on the summer vacation, I would rather have no summer vacation but have shorter weeks (such as only going three or four days a week instead of five, but no eight-week vacation in the middle of the year).

I disagree with lengthening the school days though. Kids do extra-curriculars, they have homework, some have chores, and they have to eat dinner. That's tough for some people to fit in, and shaving another hour off that freetime they have is not going to be a good idea. (Although it doesn't really pertain to me as I spend five hours sitting around each day)

That really sucks, but doesn't really have an effect on me (since I go to an British International School) but somethings might change.

Well... How long do Americans spend in school every day, Australia is 6 hours.. High school is 6 1/4 but that ain't much difference is it?

But I think I'm going to be the first and see the financial side of this. Teachers don't get much money anyway, and they now want to raise the hours. They're not going to like this. Probably the reason why most aren't good at their jobs.

But I don't concentrate in all my classes, so raising the school day will make me concentrate less, meaning worse results, and what about kids who walk home from school, later hours are less safer hours.

So no Obama, your ideas have sucked lately anyway.

Ugh. And Obama wonders why his approval rates are down... Oh, and I'm sure he'll want to get the money out of the tax-payers to do this, correct? I wonder if my parents would let me ditch school for the Obama days. Why can't he just focus on the matter at hand? The economy and the war in Iraq/Iran/etc. are much more important than making kids even more miserable. I'm sure he thinks it's good'n'all, but he could maybe bring this subject up at a better time, when the government, y'know, has some cash?

I can't agree with you more.
