'Nother rant about Attack on Titan.

How did it never occur to anybody 100 years ago to also divide each section of human territory into quarters, or even eighths? If they had done that, they would have lost a lot less territory after that first breach in the outermost wall.

I mean come on. Shouldn't that be Giant Zombie Apocalypse 101?

 

If by that you mean build more walls... Humanity struggles to even seal a single breach in one. One of the mysteries of the series seems to be the nature/origin of the walls, so I don't think it's as simple as building more.

 

This. The nature of the walls & such gets explored more in the manga, and you'll undoubtedly see it whenever the second season of the anime comes up.

 

That was my first thought, but in 100 years time they also probably could have dug some really deep and wide trenches that the titans couldn't jump across or climb out of. In the event of a breach, it would also give the WMS the added responsibility of clearing out the trenches every couple of weeks. Of course, they would have to be hella wide, so it might be counter-intuitive to the goal of maximizing the territory inside the walls. I DON'T KNOW I'M JUST SPITBALLING HERE, OKAY?

Though if the walls are special in some way, I suppose that's good enough for now. Even so, I'm still going to assume that it was just a massive oversight by the engineers who thought to build the walls that way in the first place. Maybe there was one really smart guy who spoke up and then everyone was all, "Haha, classic Greg, always wanting to go one step further!"

Ah, that's good because I'm reading the manga first anyway. It's up to Volume 12 at the moment, right?

 

The walls are made of titans.

 

Do you know how much work it takes to build those walls, the amount of materials, and the amount of space wasted for the population? Nobody expected the Colossal Titan and no other Titan has ever broken through those walls before. Plus, more walls means less room for the population to live.
