There are two versions of the word: newb and noob. A Newb is someone who is new to some context (i.e. a video game, forum, etc.) whereas a noob is thought of to be a synonym for moron.

There are two different types of "noobs".

There newbs or newbies, which is a word commonly used to explain a person that is new to a place, but aside from the period of time they've been there, they're not too different from the other people.

N00bs is internet chat for... Basically, an idiot. You could be on a forum your whole life and still be considered a n00b. A n00b generally pays no attention to grammar or spelling and makes posts that you just do not want to read.

Urban Dictionary's definition for n00b:

"Those who are defined as "n00bs" will also refuse to listen to words of wisdom or, even worse, berate those who try to help."

"An idiot. Specifically, one who is woefully naive and lacking in knowledge of a specific area of expertise (in a fandom, game, or online), but is so convinced that he/she knows far more about said area than most other people, that they blatantly disregard, and often fight against, helpful suggestions and opinions from other, more knowledgeable people."


And for newb:

term used to describe a inexperienced gamer/person/etc. Unlike a noob, a newb is someone who actually wants to get better.
