i don't think anyone could've predicted this was coming. the price is pretty good though but that's about it. i think the design is pretty ugly but that's not exactly a deal breaker. the 3D really isn't essential for any games, though it does make everything look better. does it have the same screen size as the 3DS XL?

Is this a joke? it has to be a joke. Please tell me Nintendo didn't create something that ugly.

So basically it's the 3ds without the 3d option, and is incredibly cumbersome because it doesn't fold?

Save up a little longer and buy a product worth having.

Like the concept, hate the design. I don't care much for the 3D myself, but I can't see myself buying something that looks like a slick Leapfrog.

I think I have a few things to say:
    1) The hell is with that design? Someone said it before, but I'm saying it again: It's a door stopper right there
    2) If they were going to come up with something like this, why didn't they just make it a flip screen like the rest?
    3) I don't doubt this thing is either going to sell really well for those who don't already have a 3DS, or it's not going to sell at all.
    4) It looks incredibly uncomfortable to play

Yes. Leapfrog. FOR KIDS. LIKE THIS.

Seriously, do we all need to actually sit here pretending to sip our high class tea and look down on this like "Well, I'd never be caught dead with one of those on my person." If so, good news, you don't have to. The original is still out there doing the same thing it's been doing.

    Goooood one, Nintendo. ;D

Anyway, I don't think this should bother people as much as they think it is. And even if it flops in the market, it probably won't hurt Nintendo majorly. I don't see any real improved designs compared to the 3DS XL model. Sure, I don't use 3DS option because I get blind as a bat, but lol, it seems this idea was put together in less than a day or something.

I agree. they probably just decided on this two days ago, manufactured it, then released it.

    Repostin'.

While I do not have much to say about the aesthetics or internal mechanics, I can understand why Nintendo would want to aim at an audience younger than seven with a handheld like such (taking into account what James posted regarding the audience). Acknowledging the 3DS' constraints by virtue of its design -- the 3D and the clamshell -- is understandable when one realizes that the intention for the 2DS is indeed because things might be too complicated for younger ones and the like. Therefore, targeting the below-seven age with a handheld taking influence of simplicity from the Game Boy era makes sense when Nintendo's success has partly been built on young children in the past. Did many of you play something on a Game Boy when fairly young?

Nintendo is just trying to cover their bases. I am fine with my 3DS, however.

Also, the battery life is just a smidgen greater than the original 3DS which is more than anything a slight improvement considering they seem to be using essentially identical technology.

I think it is natural that nintendo tries to sell cheaper games( are you kidding me? Vita is curently at the same price as the 3DS XL, they need a price drop), and a lot of people don't like 3D( headaches, dizziness some say the turn off the 3D is the best feature of the 3DS). For example, I don't go the 3D movies unless I got no choice, until this day I never saw a movie that worths the price of the 3D

The strange thing about it, is that they should try to make the 3DS cheaper (lite?), and not more expensive like the XL. The absurd thing about it, is that while I don't like the 3D, making it 2D isn't the same as go back to the Nintendo DS? Like to admit the only new thing on their new generation of handleds wrong? They could go back making DS games insted? At least we can play some pokemon!

I hear rumors that some 3DS games acutually uses the 3D in the gameplay (and the flip screen as well), didn't you guys said that the main motive Kingdom hearts 3D couldn't come to Ps3 was the "Motion flow" ? If they make it work in 2D, there is no more worries then? I don't know, but maybe some games are ruined without the 3D.

Other aspect of the 3D... we all like to say it is horrible and stuff, but I read an article at Kotaku about a guy that is "Stereoblind" (can't see 3D), however he could see the third dimension for the first time at a 3DS, so we can't say is something "worthless".

I think nintendo did this because as it is today a Vita and a 3DSXL are at the same price $199, they would not make the 3DSXL cheaper so they made a "creapier version" to make people find the 3DS even more appealing.

The Flowmotion could work on the consoles (Nomura confirmed we'll be seeing some form of that mechanic & others from 3D in KH3 in an interview a while back). The real issue with it being on PS3 was because raising the Dream Eaters requires use of the touch screen, which the PS3 unfortunately doesn't have.

The 2DS still has a touchscreen and can still play all the games the 3DS can -- it just doesn't have the option to turn on 3D and doesn't have the flip screen.

It's not so much a crappier version as it is a "kiddie" version. The 2DS is being aimed specifically towards the younger end of the audience (like 5-10 year olds). A large part of this, I believe, was because little kids' eyes are much more sensitive to the 3D the younger they are, so removing that and also cutting the price gives more incentive for parents to go out and buy it for their kids. Plus the fact that it lacks the flip portion the DS/3DS has means it won't be easy for kids to snap half the screen off and render the whole thing obsolete (though there is still concerns about how to keep the screens safe since they'll be constantly exposed).

****ing this. The 2DS is ultimately harmless. Its great for people who don't want to spring an extra $40-$80 for one of the other versions, as well as for kids, but this means nothing for people who already have a 3DS.

None of the three versions of the 3DS are meant to be better than the others, they're meant for different demographics and preferences. The original is meant to appeal to most customers. Compared to the other models, its the most portable design and is decently priced. The 3DS XL is intended for an older demographic with poorer eyesight, as well as gamers who prefer a larger device with larger screens.

The 2DS is not meant for the same demographics as the other two models. It is meant for a younger audience, as well as budget conscious gamers who outright can't afford the other models. It is not in anyway meant as an upgrade. In fact, its meant as a downgrade with the removal of the 3D screen, the lower quality mono speaker and the lack of clamshell design (which is just as much to reduce parts count as it is to make it more durable).

The design is a bit eh, and the button placement is very odd. But overall I have to say its nice for a younger audience.
Honestly, I hope this is also some way that Nintendo realized that 3D is just really gimmicky and unnecessary. Despite the fact I do use 3D a lot its p dumb lol.
