need suggestions for an anime to watch

Someone mentioned D.Gray-man. The anime is horrible and will turn you off to it. Read the manga instead.

Samurai 7 - Based on Seven Samurai, a movie about seven samurai (hor hor naw really) who agree to defend a village from bandits for nothing but rice. The anime greatly expands on the plot, adding extra time spent in the city, a rescue mission, political intrigue, greatly developed story for most of the cast, and some steam/cyberpunk elements for that Them Crazy Japs flavor. Great story, finale is absolutely breathtaking. WARNING: Mild case of Anyone Can Die.

Ergo Proxy - I'm only three episodes in but god damnit, watch it. It's cyberpunk, and it looks to stand on even ground with Ghost in the Shell. If you haven't seen that, well, watch them both, and I'm not even going to describe GitS because you do not have a choice in watching it, it needs to be watched.

Baccano! - Mafiosi, alchemy, immortals who actually like being immortal, and sweet, sexy jazz. Also Jerry Jewell in the dub. Need I say more?

Eureka Seven - Did anyone mention this? Well, they should've. First off, the anime came first, so there's no filler and the animation quality is tops (doesn't hurt that BONES made it, either). Second, it's mecha, but very weird mecha, and doesn't revolve entirely around the mecha; there are non-pilots who have relevance to the plot, if only a bit. Also lots of pseudo-philosophical madness, always good. Oh, and did I mention it's a love story with REALISTIC CONFLICT? That is, the couple encounter ACTUAL PROBLEMS that aren't always solved by the power of LOVE AND FRIENDSHIP? Yeah well there's that. Oh and there's multiple couples, so if one makes you sick you might like the others. Even sans the love plot, it's still worth a watch.

Backing this up with gusto. If you have watched anime, you should watch these. They're some of the greats. Dub or sub, doesn't matter, just get that shit done.

Love Hina
Usually described as and ecchi or harem anime, it is really more comedy and slice of life in my opinion. Follows the efforts of Keitaro Ureshima, an obvious accidental pervert, who gets recruited by his grandmother to be the manager of an all girls dorm. However, he discovers this in the most painful way possible, bathing in the hot springs just before the girls get back from some sort of outing. Filled with romance, comedy, fail, awesomeness, and turtles. Robot turtles to be precise. Including one episode where something goes wrong and the resident swordswoman, who is incidentally afraid of turtles, has to fight a GIANT ROBOT TURTLE.

Kampfer
12 episodes that are pretty much a bunch of hot girls fighting and one blatantly lesbian girl who has a crush on a girl whose default form is a guy who she hates and has a crush on her. It gets really weird when Male Natsuru and Female Natsuru start dating and Kaede, the lesbian, catches Male Natsuru "cheating" on Female Natsuru. Very funny when the girls aren't fighting. It's one of those series that gives anime a bad name, but it's really awesome if you manage to look past the extremely blatant sexual themes.

I'm sure I'll think of more eventually.

You should watch Berserk because it has titties, an amazing story, gore, an amazing soundtrack, titties and some of the greatest characters of all time. Oh and titties.

 

That's a good one. It's filled with romance, comedy, nonsense, and it has a great dub to boot.

 

See, that may have worked if she said "you should watch no anime", but she said "you should just not watch anime."

 

Except I was referring to the whole "you should just not watch anime" as the title. I shouldn't have expected normal people to get it.

You do know that "most popular anime" doesn' t necessarily mean "best anime out there", right ?
Anyway, the best selling shonen is neither Bleach nor Naruto, it' s One Piece (how come nobody mentioned that one ?)

 

yeah but it's the one people recommend based on the choices.

idc how good it is, i just want something to watch that other people enjoyed. Also, most people on this forum aren't weaboos and don't say that their favorite anime is Naruto, so I can trust their judgement.

Ergo Proxy - psychological, steampunk. Not for the faint of heart; really, it's confusing, but one of the best made animes I can think of in terms of presentaion and execution. Post apocolyptic, but don't let that deter you. I don't like to give anything away at all, though, so I don't know how to convince you but...whatever.

D.Gray Man - Reminds me alot of FMA somehow

Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom - psychological, tragedy; one of the most tragedy-est tragedy you will every see. Lots of shoot-outs and hand to hand stuff. How some of the characters age really bothers me (ex. afters years have passed, they still look exactly the same), but otherwise, I have no qualms.

Vampire Knight, Mirai Nikki (ongoing) too lazy to put info for these.
