That was such a freaky movie..but I see the comparison. Seeing as we have the benefit of knowing it's going to happen, whether or not it's really destructive doesn't matter. We need to be prepared instead of kicking ourselves after the worst comes to past.

The problem isn't things going out for a few hours, if the flare is big enough it could ravage electrical girds for months. The kind of regression that could to do to our society isn't measurable, which is why we should take a threat like this seriously.

It's a little more complicated than that...

And don't forget that Solar flares emit Gamma Ray Particles (it isn't usually this bad, but in 2013 it will be a combo of Solar flares and the Solar magnetic energy cycle:

So in other words, if you have a cell phone, it'll be obsolete, totally fried. EMP are very dangerous for electronic devices. Hence the reason why it is used as a weapon in warefare and why this is a big problem.

Adding onto Llave's post, other forms of technology will likely be fried as well.

Computers, television, power grids; Basically, a lot of the things we depend on will be rendered more or less completely obsolete, and as Droid said earlier, there is a high chance that things won't be functional again for months. Which will also hurt the overall economy, considering we use technology for the stock exchange, and it would also mean that countries may possible lose any and all ability to communicate with each other. It's definitely a really scary thought.

Oh, well then I'm definitely off to Texas for the duration.
And if technology is going to be potentially out of it for months, then I can easily see other problems arising during that time. Time for everybody to travel by sail ship?
In all seriousness, I doubt it will as bad as predicted since these things tend to be over-predicted in order to be prepared for the worst, but in the off-chance it will be that bad, underground lead shelters all round. And plenty of CD backup copies of files you care about.
