They seem to be working fine for me. Are you checking the box under "Miscellaneous Options" that says "Disable smilies in text?"

If you are on a filtered network (such as most schools have), the image path may be blocked depending on what content is allowed.

 

True that, my school doesn't let us access porn sites, sites containing personal information such as facebook or myspace and IMing sites such as OmGxD and meebo or even aim.

It doesn't let us sign into any site either.

Also listen to Misty there are boxed underneath that say:

Miscellaneous Options:
[♥]Show your signature
[♥]Automatically parse links in text
[]Disable smilies in text <-------- If that is checked then it' disabling smiles.
