it sucks I know. and yes, it is a edited picture of a transformer

 

First off, I would say never ever, effect your focal point like that, I had to stare and figure out what it was. Secondly the best thing to do would be to find a tutorial. I would say work on making things more complicated and trying to experiment with different things. Such as clipping masks and the smudge and burn tool, which will create depth to your work.

 

Well, it's a good try for a first try.
