The Princess Diaries movie series didn't go over so well with me (I used to be a big fan of the books >.<). The first one was somewhat accurate and tolerable, but the second movie was so off it was mortifying.

Movies from books are never EVER better than the book. Period. End of discussion.

You can fit so much more in a book, a book relies on the intelligence and imagination of the reader to make it work. I have been let down by too many terrible adaptions to think any other way >_>.

Any time a film adaption comes out ALWAYS read the book first. You will see the major difference.

    Alright.

Where the Red Fern Grows was extremely dissapointing. So were Bridge to Terabithia (it was a good movie , but not in the sense of being related to the book), Series of Unfortunate Events, Princess Diaries.... people, is it really so hard to do the movie like the book?! Really!

Are you serious? I never read the book, but the movie was a huge disappointment in general...except I almost cried when that one girl died T.T Eragon was also a let down. The book was really good and then the movie was just BLAH.

Not all of the movies based on books are bad. The Lord of the Rings was outstanding, not to mention easier to follow than the book.

The Lord of the Rings films are about the only films I can honestly say do the book proud ^^

This is something I have often said, I always prefer the book to the films, too much is cut out or changed. IMO even the Harry Potter films fail in comparison to the books (especially the 3rd one .__.)

I agree with Bunty xD Books rely on the reader to make them alive <3 but films are just how the director etc interprets =/

Oh, The Lord of the Rings, how could I forget ~ Yeah, those were all fantastic. The Harry Potter movies were good, but they really butchered some of them =/.

I heard they're gonna be making an Uglies movie in 2008, and I can only hope they don't ruin it. One thing about the fact that it's how the director interprets the book is once you see the movie, it's hard to interpret to book the way you did originally ever again. That sorta ruins the experience IMO. If Uglies sucks as bad as Eragon did, I don't know what I'll do XD It happens to be one of my favorites...

Anyway, most book-to-movie adaptations aren't too good, but I'm sure squeezing something like that into one or two hours is pretty difficult, so it's understandable -- which is probably why The Lord of the Rings movies were so good, they made them long enough to stay true to the books. And even with The Lord of the Rings they had to cut some stuff out...

Movies based off of books are sometimes really great but most of the time seem to be giant disappointments.

I have realized though one thing before I go watch a movie based off a book or series of novels. That is that I will tell myself that it is -not- going to be the same all the way, no matter how I feel the book would make an awesome movie left alone and just scripted direct. This way I don't disappoint myself too much getting all eager for the movies.

This philosophy saved me from being upset at Harry Potter movies and LOTR, along with some others like Interview with a Vampire and X-Men 2, Ghost Rider, etc.

However, when a movie -entirely- avoids a book like 'Queen of the Damned' did, it makes me really annoyed. That movie had -nothing- at all to do with the book other than names of characters. I was very annoyed because that movie could have been so much better, even with the actors that were in it. That was entirely the director's fault and the script was just plain awful. I'm sure there are other movies I could mention that have little if anything to do with the books they were derived from but if you haven't seen this movie or read the book, I encourage you to do so and then respond and tell me what you thought! It is my prime example!

YES. That movie made me so upset.

The book was so damned awesome. The movie looked like Mtv had made it. So many things wrong with it...

    1. MARIUS IS NOT LESTAT'S MAKER.
    2. There were no twins which was A CENTRAL PLOT IDEA
    3. No Louis which made me sad.
    4. Marius was not the Nordic man I envisioned.
    5. JESSIE SHOULD NOT HOOK UP WITH LESTAT.

    *Takes deep breaths*

It was good as a music video watching Stewart Townsend prance around half-naked though in those...should be illegal leather pants. xD

otherwise I'm usually good with the mindset that books based on movies will never be as good as the book they're based on.
