I really hope the Let's Play genre just dies out entirely. If I want to hear an annoying voiceover while watching someone play a game, I can just watch my 11 year old nephew play BlazBlue. With any luck, Let's Plays will be slowly replaced with "Let's Shut Up And Plays."

Also, that Nintendo Minute was way more than a minute long. I counted.

 

Man because the existence of a thing that others enjoy but you can choose to avoid is really hurting you isn't it?

Tell you what, if you want quiet footage, try searching for a walkthrough or a longplay. Better yet, play the damn game yourself.

 

Watching a playthrough of a game with any commentary?!

 

It doesn't hurt me, but I'm affected by it because no matter how clear I make it that I hate Let's Plays, there's always that one friendly acquaintance of mine who goes, "Hey, I know you hate Let's Plays, but check this one out! It's totally different in a way that you'll like," but then it never is. That guy is the most annoying person that I know and I can't get rid of him because he's practically everyone.

Let's Plays still manage to get through those searches, though, and I don't really mind commentary as long as it doesn't take place when the gameplay needs to be the star of the show. That's why I mentioned the idea of a "Let's Shut Up And Play." Something where the commentary is present, but limited to portions of the video where nothing significant is happening onscreen. You know, things like loading screen and menus, and generic gameplay like walking from Point A to Point B or mowing down enemies on the way to the next mission. With the right narrator, that would be okay to watch.

Wow, that really does sound terrible. Friends suggesting videos you don't like. Searching for something and not all the results being what you wanted.
Definitely good enough reason to wish an entire genre just stopped.

'Grats man, you've actually managed to make the guy who regularly preaches respecting other people's problems, no matter how small, and advocates empathy and understanding above all else throw up his arms and say, "Whoop-de-fuckin'-do." My friends send me shit I don't like all the time, and I politely (more or less) tell them to take it elsewhere. If they don't, they get reprimanded. If the problem persists, they clearly don't respect me, so I make it a confrontation. Point being there's a solution far more practical than "Kill the thing they keep sending me," and it's called "Set some damnable boundaries with the people I allow into my life."

It's one thing to have tastes that don't align with the norm, but wishing death on a trend that people enjoy, just because you don't, is absurd. So it's harder to find what you like. So what? It's out there, and if you look you'll find it. Off the top of my head, YouPickGames goes quiet during every cutscene of the games he plays. Besides, the thing you want can coexist with the thing you don't want, and eliminating the one doesn't guarantee more of the other will appear, so I don't get your train of thought.

I've never been unable to find a silent playthrough of a game if I wanted to see the footage badly enough and couldn't readily replay it myself. Let's Plays may breach your searches but they won't be all you find.

What about the third option of "Let people enjoy their stupid fad and hope to the Elder Gods that it dies on its own very soon?" I don't want to kill Let's Plays. I just want the fad to be over already. Although I wouldn't be opposed to having Youtube change its view counting system again to prevent Let's Plays from exploiting it, my current plan is to wait it out and spread my opinion.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to erase the word "---------" from --------- everybody's minds. I heard it misused one too many times and now I'm finally going to do something about it.

 

Is this reminding anybody else of those people who insisted the internet and videogames were fads that would fade like pogs and slinkies?

 

considering that a major feature of the PS4 & XBONE are built-in streaming, recording, and commentary capabilities

i would not hold my breath for the end of let's plays

( i like them as long as the person is not annoying, though the only one i have watched full through is scottish duck's playthrough of primal because i am terrible at puzzles. )

 

Streaming's not going to die out, especially with, as Misty said, next gen consoles having it built-in.

But how about, instead of hoping that something people genuinely enjoy dying, you drop the people who seem to be forcing you to watch it?

And there are people who do Let's Plays and don't talk the entire way through too.

 

That would be a walkthrough / playthrough, then. Let's plays have commentary.

 

Man, did Nintendo rape your first born son or something? I just can't help but notice your giant, pulsing hatred for the company spewing out all over the place with your constant jabs in your threads.

 

No I mean, they still have commentary, but won't talk over the game's dialogue.

 

That's just personal LP'ers preference, some people shut up during voiced cutscenes, some talk over, some voiced unvoiced ones etc. Need to find The Let's Player that best suits your needs. Which is a good thing we have 1,000,000.
