That's awful...I feel bad for the child and for her family. I know she apparently had "mental problems" but that's just wrong. That's horrible, tragic and disgusting.

That's one of the most heinous things you can do to a person let alone a newborn which makes it even sadder. =/

Poor child. Sounds like Otty [the woman] was a schizophrenic. Seems that the separation from her husband left her mental state in a terrible condition than it had been before. However, if the family was already aware of Otty’s mental condition, why was she not cared for in the mental institution to begin with till she had her baby...or sent to the psychiatric ward after the delivery, keeping the baby at home? Small mistakes of pity like that results in horrible consequences such as this.

That's really sad and yeah, it sounds like she has schizophrenia. There is treatment for that, but it is a brain debilitating disease and without medication the results can be this kind of thing. I wonder if while going to a psyche ward as the article says, if they actually bothered to diagnose her with anything and help her at all. Very tragic.

Cannablism is a culture, but this is sick. It almost seems ritualistic.

Ugh. This is horrible, and i feel bad for the baby. :(

This is just really gross. D:
If she had conditions like this before the birth, why would family members even allow the pregnancy to continue...? Perhaps the pressure of the break-up with the baby's father altered the mentality of her mind, to the point of her eharing voices and obeying them. >.>

She was obviously not very strong minded. i thought mothers were supposed to protect their child not decapacitate and decapitate their child.

This disease of the kind must've been their for a longer time than a week, this must've been triggered by something before it, something much grander than a break up must've caused it.

In the end it just shows you what happens when you box someone into a corner, whether it's physically of mentally, the actions can be extreme.

    Erm.., Eww??

I feel sorry for the newborn first of all. That poor child, it didn't even get a chance to live. I feel sorry for all those little ones who die without even knowing what life is about.

Poor Otty, she definately sounds like a schitzophreniac. When the doctors tested her, they should've checked properly and deeper, maybe they may have missed something that a scan didn't show/or whatever it is they do. The break-up with her husband most likely had an effect on what she did.

^^Where was the family at the time?? The article also says that some of the family was with her at the time of the incident, but were uninjured. Shouldn't they have of tried to help Otty?? To relax her or something?? To stop her from committing that terrible crime>? I'm not saying that the family is to blame, no one is, but I think they should've done something to help the situation, instead of do nothing.

I'm sorry for the victims of cannabalism. May that poor baby rest in peace.

I'm also sorry for the victims of schitzophrenia.

    1) This coulda happened anywhere, not just TEXAS.
    2) This is gross, disgusting, and I can't believe a woman could kill her child in the first place, much less eat it.

If the woman had mental problems, why didn't they just take care of her before something this tragic happened?

I believe Texas does have a relatively high mental disorder rate compared to others states I believe, maybe one of the reasons for the number of problems there.

Disgusting, is saying to little, but really it is a problem doctors or friends and family should have realised sooner than later, paranoia is scary as hell.

Oh wow, that's probably the worst kind of news I've heard all month. I never thought I'd ever hear about something like this.

But yeah, it could have happened anywhere in the world. If someone else had the disease, you never know.

I think this is disturbing, to a certain extent.
It's obvious that she had mental problems, and will be taken into care. I think it's saddening that a woman with such inner demons was allowed to keep her child, or that the husband did not take the baby into his care.

It really isn't her fault. She's mentally unstable, and while it is very disgusting, she needs help. Not much else to it.

    Thats sick.
But some new mothers after thier baby is born start hearing voices and start thinking that the baby is evil so they kill it.
But thats just cannibalism so she should get help and be put away from awhile.

My aunt said something about this last week. I don't care if your mentally disabled, why would your think that. I'm so sad for the baby.

Schizophrenia is a brain altering condition. It sounds like that is what she had and it worsened with the stress of feeling abandoned by those around her, so maybe on top of that was some postpartum depression and anxiety. Those things coupled together, I can imagine her will broke and she just went with things. It's quite tragic in the end; especially since it seems that others knew she was not 'all there' upstairs and just left her with the baby and little support.
