Well, what kind of audience are we talking about here? A Western or Eastern audience?

I'd have to say Dragon Ball is one of the most popular franchises in Japan. To them, it's sorta like Star Wars.

 

There's no most popular anime. What's more, popularity is meaningless. While Naruto is popular (undeserving of its popularity in my opinion) Lupin the Third, an anime which has far better plot and action in my opinion, is fairly unnoticed. Just because it got a dub that aired on Cartoon Network, it became popular. If Lupin the Third was on Cartoon Network and not Adult Swim (though you really can't do that with Lupin the Third), it would have been much more popular.

But if I had to list a few...
