Mortal Kombat is a worldwide popular fighting game series that started in 1992 to compete with the then hyped Street Fighter II. Mortal Kombat's fighting game engine was similar to its rival's, though it had some differences. It had introduced the popular techinque known as juggling where you could keep hitting an opponent in the air for more damage. However, MK's greatest innovation was the Fatality, a finishing move that could be performed by the victor of the match, which resulted in the winner ending the loser's life in a gruesome manner such as heart ripping and immolation.

In 1995, a Mortal Kombat movie was released in theaters. Unlike other movies based on games, this particular one was exceptionally well-received even by those not familiar with the series..

The movie is based on the first game with some differences. It revolves around fighters chosen from around the world to participate in a battle of good versus evil known as Mortal Kombat. Liu Kang enters the tournament in order to avenge his fallen brother Chan Kang (Chow Kang in the video game), who was brutally murdered by the final boss of the game, Shang Tsung, an evil shapeshifting sorcerer who steals souls to maintain and sustain his life. Meanwhile, Sonya Blade of the Special Forces is hunting down a ruthless mercenary named Kano and tracks him down to the tournament alone. Finally, Johnny Cage, a 'washed up has-been' is given an invitation by an old friend to the tournament in order to confirm that his fighting prowess is indeed real. These warriors of Earth are guided by a dry-witted version of Raiden

Unlike other video game films, the Mortal Kombat film stays completely true to the original storyline, though there are some differences, such as the appearance of three MKII characters: Jax, Kitana and the MKII version of Reptile. The fight scenes are marvelous and the storyline itself is solid. The movie even features Fatalities, which was quite different from the time considering that infamous elements from their video game counterparts weren't normally prominent. Several of the differences from the movie were later transferred to the game, such as Cage and Goro's rivalry as well as retconning Kano into an Australian-Japanese thug thanks to the late Trevor Goddard..

At the time, if people wanted a perfect movie version of a video game, Mortal Kombat was the movie to look forward to until Tomb Raider came by.

    Any thoughts or questions? o:

I really did like MK when it came out. They did a really good job with the first Mortal Kombat film and sequenced it very well. The second MK was not as good and I was kind of disappointed to not see Christopher Lambert in the role of Raiden. There is apparently rumor of a third MK movie with Christopher Lambert returning to the role in 2010. It is up on the IMDB with a message of the script is being rewritten.

I don't know why but I think one of my favorite lines for MK 1 was "Your soul is mine!" which I still find myself sometimes saying today. It was just so catchy.

The first movie had me chilling with excitement. It was so much better than the Street Fighter movie. the second movie was a disaster, and apparently the new one being set into to motion is designed to make us forget Annihilation.

The second movie was alright but not as good as the first. The first just seemed so flawless to me in some ways and rolled through nicely. I think the second one was a downer because some characters were not the same actors and the plot was not that good. I will say though it was still better than the awful Street Fighter movie with Van Damme in it.

Oh yeah. The first Mortal Kombat film I couldn't stop rewatching over and over. However when Shang Tsung was dragging Sonya to the portal, the way she was screaming seemed a bit TOO enthusiastic. And after that Raiden's yell of "Stop!" seemed like he was bored of the whole ordeal. That part right there was my only complaint. But all in all, it was a good movie. The ending was kinda expected. Scorpion's spear was a pretty nice effect. So was Sub-Zero's moves. They could've done a little better on Shang's attacks, though. And Goro was expectedly the typical computer animated fight.

The second movie...if they had brought everyone from the first movie back instead of just Liu Kang and Kitana, it MIGHT have been better. But the script was pretty lame. They had too many characters (or not enough) and a pretty weak plot. Seriously, who the heck was that guy who played Sub-Zero? I mean, even David Hasselhoff (who I think his unmasked icon in UMK3 looks like) would've been better. Either that or it was just the poor script and lousy CGI (The Animalities blew big time) that doomed the second movie.

Anyway, first movie was legendary. Sequel blew chunks. If there's a third movie, it'll have to stay true to its storyline this time if they ever want the MK franchise to rise from the ashes instead of pitting it against the DC universe.

I didn't really mind Sub Zero. But yeah, the problem I had was just ...well the actors weren't the same. Replacing Raiden was the most obvious one. However, just the plot as well was weak. I heard that the third movie would have Christopher Lambert back as Raiden, but I'm not absolutely sure. If it does, surely that at least is an improvement.

Sad to say, Johnny Cage was my least favorite character in Mortal Kombat. =:/. So I didn't mind so much. lol. I suppose for fans of him though, that really did suck and it wasn't that noble of a death scene. He died so swiftly.

LMFAO, I suppose I may have heard about it, but kinda blocked it out since it's difficult for me to trust video game movies after Super Mario Brothers.
