It's a Dell Desktop, Windows XP Professional 2002.

It's been hit by a storm of viruses and crap lately and I've scanned and cleaned it many times, but a couple days later, it's overrun again.

So we decided to just system restore it using the installation discs.

Unfortunately, the CD drive wouldn't open. I finally got it open using the "paper clip in hole" trick, but now it says there's nothing in there.

If I go to My Computer, click on the D: Drive, the window's blank like there's nothing in there.

I put in an audio CD to see if it was the installation disc, but it won't say there's an audio cd in there either.

I tried checking the audio cd with Windows Media Player, but whatever's wrong with this computer won't let me do ANYTHING, it'll just say whatever program I'm trying to run is infected.

Am I missing something on restoring it to factory settings? Or is something wrong with the CD Drive that's stopping me?

I believe that viruses can sometimes override your CD drive and pretty much render it useless, which is probably what you're experiencing. I don't know much abut repairing it myself, but I did a quick google search, and these two sites might help:

Considering you're on a desktop, you could check to make sure it's not the cables that are causing the problems if you have some spare ones laying around, but unless you yourself have been fiddling around in there I doubt that's the problem.
