I actually hate the world of cardboard speech. It characterizes the largest problem I have with Superman and most serialized characters in general. There isn't a planned arc for development or an intelligently constructed plot. It's done at best on a year to year basis and at worst on an issue to issue basis. Then there's other writers with different visions coming in muddying continuity further. So when we finally have our story it's not self consistent. It doesn't match up with itself and when it becomes important that something has a correct continuity we end up with stupid sounding retcons like that speech. I'm not going to lie, it's a very well constructed plot hole. But it's basically still just a lampshade. I feel like all of the good things you mentioned about Supes can be boiled down to the same thing. It's a series of very well constructed plot holes. You can still like that but when I see something that is so obviously just a patch for a problem that should never have existed it bothers me.

So read somewhere (can't remember where) that they are planning to make a sequel. So guys, who do you think should be the villain if there is a sequel?

I could respond to it if you want. :3

Ah... I'm going to sound like a complete idiot here but... I honestly don't understand. [IMG]

No big deal. I'll try to be more clear. So when you work week to week or month to month you have time constraints and you have to try to make every single update "worthwhile". This messes with the pacing of a grander arc and development and usually forces writers into situations where they have written two contradictory things to keep it interesting on a local basis. This might seem alright to some people, but I like things to have a deliberate and intentional feel not a thrown together, gotta get the ratings feel. The world of cardboard speech was introduced to smooth out some of the discrepancies in Superman's power level. In essence, they were covering their mistakes by pulling out a totally random reason for it. A lot of people like it because they can understand the reason and Supes seems relatively badass when he's saying it. I don't like it because I actually think it sounds like bullshit and I understand why they wanted to write it in the first place.

So if I understand, please correct me if I'm wrong, you dislike the "Cardboard Planet" speech (I know that's not what it is called. Shut up.) because you feel it is a random reason the writers just made up to justify why Superman holds back?

Because of that and the fact that it's the crowning example of all of the things they do of that kind. The reasoning for it is more important than the thing itself though. I just prefer a clean continuity because it shows a writer knows where they are going and what they're trying to say rather than pandering.

    Hmm, that's reasonable.

I imagine it is hard to write Superman. :\

It really is. It's probably got over 70 years of history by now. It was written in a different age, for a different audience by different people. There's no way adapting such an outdated idea could possibly be easy. The themes in Superman show it's age and it's origin, too. The outsider who never really fits in but decides to support the establishment regardless and ends up being the backbone of the system itself? That's early century immigrants in America to a tee. Even now that may hold true to an extent. Anyhow, Superman really doesn't appeal to my sensibility on any level and I do think Clark Kent is a bland and unlikeable character, but I'm not going to say that it's any worse than any other super hero series out there.

I agree to an extent. This is the only reason that I've avoided comic books (I've been meaning to try some but just haven't gotten to it), because there are too many writers, too many continuities, and too many different books for each character. The result of this is what you said you had a problem with, and though it doesn't really bother me to that extent, I see where you're coming from. If I had my way every character would only have one book, and only one author would work on that character until his time was up or he retired, and then they would give the character to another author. However, because of the nature of comic books the apparent sad truth is that this is unavoidable, and impossible to correct now. What I'm trying to say is that there's nothing that can be done, so oh well.

Start with Dynamite and Image. They are smaller and are less bound by the timed format. Also, Nonplayer by Nate Simpson is gorgeous and probably will only end up being about one book long if he ever finishes.

You also forgot being a good person and being someone to aspire to be like was something Superman represented back in his heyday.

Personally I was always more of a Batman fan. Superman I feel is alright but I can think of a few others that I like way better.

I have no particular feelings on Superman, I'm primarily just not interested; but I actively dislike Batman. New Aquaman is much better.

Aquaman is so unappreciated by the public at large.

A rep he will never, ever, get back. Sadly. And that is the reason why he will likely never get a movie, and if he does I doubt people will flock to see it.
