Well, the reason everyone probably thought he was a girl...is because Nomura originally planned on making Marluxia a female. However, he changed his mind at the last minute, made Marluxia a man and gave him a lower voice and all, but kept the powers and such the same. The reason he said for this was because Xemnas (apparently being a chauvinist of some sort) would probably never leave a female in charge of the Castle Oblivion and Org members stationed there. I thought Marluxia was female too at first. In RE when I heard his voice it was funny because it just doesn't seem to go with him to me, but at the same time it oddly fits.

 

Wait, don't tell me no one here knew that each member had an element:

Xemnas: Nothingness
Xigbar: Space/Gravity
Xaldin: Wind
Vexen: Ice
Lexaeus: Earth
Zexion: Phantom/Illusion
Saïx: Moon
Axel: Fire
Demyx: Water
Luxord: Time
Marluxia: Flower/Nature
Larxene: Thunder
Roxas: Light

Just in case, I will also note that each member's name is an anagram of their original name with an "X" added as a mark of brotherhood:

Saïx: Unknown (Most likely "Saï" which I believe means "Rhino" in Japanese which makes sense)
Axel: Unknown (Most likely "Ale" because he was based on Final Fantasy's Reno whose favorite drink is ale)
Demyx: Unknown (Most likely either "Medy" or "Myde" because his name was based on "Melody")
Luxord: Unknown (Dulro or Rudol sound the best)
Marluxia: Unknown (Lumaria XD)
Larxene: Unknown (Arlene or Renela sound the best)

I agree with that they said its kind of a personality thing. the person has a trait that is amplified during the process that the bodies of the stronger hearted people go through

 

Actually, each member also carries traits that fit into typical Final Fantasy job statuses.
I don't have the time to think of/remember them all right now, but...
