Originally going to be posted in the Maleficent film thread, I felt I could better elaborate it into a discussion. Obviously, I understand that many of the film adaptations to certain fairy tales will differ from their original literary counterparts, but it's the live action ones I feel conflicted with most.

Beastly, Jack the Giant Slayer, Hansel and Gretal: Witch Hunters, and Snow White and the Huntsman are just a few of the most recent portrayals of adaptations. It just seems just because it's live action, so much more has to be at stake in terms of action, and upcoming war, or just generally good looking people. The story if you look at it, DOES show what it borrows from the source material, but in the greater scope of things, doesn't really acknowledge it.

This is why Maleficent Maleficent worries me. In the most recent trailer, it makes her look like an Anti-Hero, and to be honest, that looks a bit insulting. I'll watch before I fully stand against it, but Maleficent was supposed to be this savant, dark fairy who plays the role of evil so well, just to see her become an object of sympathy is pretty befitting to the MISTRESS OF ALL EVIL!

Anyways, that's just my little take on it. Yours?

I was also a fan of how unapologetically evil Maleficent has been in various Disney productions throughout the years, and as interesting as the Maleficent movie looks, it does worry me. Adaptations of old fairy tales by all these different people is one thing, but Disney doing this to one of their own original characters is another entirely...

I don' t remember why Maleficent got mad in the Disney classic, but in the original tale she was upset because the king forgot to invite her to the party. She showed up anyway and found out the king had laid golden presents for every fairy but her. As petty as it sounds, she was a scorned woman in essence. The fairy tale boiled it down to something simple because that' s what fairy tales do, but scorned women is a topic worth exploring. After all, fairy tales are often cautionary tales.

Besides, they all have layers. Sure, Alice in wonderland can be read as an inocent stroll down a pure fantasy world, but when Gotlib decided to make it an analogy about discovering sexuality he pulled it off !

If twisting the original material helps you to expose one of its layers or to make a new one, heh, why not ? There' s a lot of cult movies out there who twisted their original material beyond recognition.[DOUBLEPOST=1395306783][/DOUBLEPOST]
Was she ? Or was she living in a medieval, bigotted society systematically painting unsubmissive women as evil incarnate ? Once you' re deemed to be a witch no matter what you might as well embrace the role.

Think about it for a second, prince "charming" was essentially a rapist, yet he was depicted as a rainbow farter. Maybe Disney was turning the tables on you from starters. Woops, did I just destroy your childhood ? ^^

I think live action films are obviously a different adaption and people can get mad because the original was an animation and this live action will interfere with the original story. In things like animes, I feel it's a lot harder to translate it to a live action because it's such a unique form of animation, a lot of exaggerated expression and feeling is portrayed in how it's presented but with something like Sleeping Beauty, it's not the same, it's just drawn as if they were human. This is sort of why I dislike anime to live action but something like Maleficent doesn't bother me too much.

I personally find opening up the story of Maleficent very interesting because, yes she is a villain, she is evil, but she is also someone who was made that way- all villains are there to be hated but we never get their side of the story. To me it's like in real life, we find it easy to hate on someone who has been horrible or done something terrible but we never consider their side of the story- we could throw insults at them not understanding their lives and think it okay when that makes us no better than them. Maleficent is evil but she was made that way in some shape or form and I like that that is being explored. I hope it teaches that although someone may seem evil on the outside, they aren't always as bad as they are made out to be.
