I found my old cards. I never played it for real, but I've been thinking about getting into it seriously. Does anyone here play or know any resources a beginner can use?

I'm not good at Magic per se but I know a lot about it. There's no real place for a beginner in any of the competitive formats but if you're trying to get into it with your friends see how many cards you have and see if you can do a draft cube from what you have. That way there will always be variety in what's getting played and you want have a reason to buy too many more due to an arms race mentality developing as happens when people have their own decks and cards in a small community.

I was more of a yugioh fan. The most I know is that Magic hasn't changed nearly as much as Yugioh has over the years. That's about it. I've done a few games, and it's not terrible, but even with how Yugioh is, I'd still do Yugioh over Magic. Though I won't lie, some of the cards just cause me to do a double-take and stare in wonder

Magic is actually far better designed as a game than YuGiOh is though. I can't say either one is amazingly fun for me at this point, but just looking at them in terms of balance and forethought, Magic wins for sure. Sure some things like Jace the Mind Sculptor get through the future league because players are more creative with their decks than devs but almost everything that is in Magic is in there as it was intended and as such there are very few bans. YuGiOh on the other hand really isn't about maintaining balance or anything but more about constantly updating, which makes it a different kind of game entirely.

Secondly, Magic has changed a lot since we were children. They just are more consistent and work within their own rules more, it's not like they keep printing the same cards with different names over and over. They create new metas and news deck archetypes like they did with enchantment creatures and devotion decks. However, I do agree that YuGiOh is a more fluid game because they are less considerate of their past framework so it gives them the freedom to try new things that keep it fresh in its own way.

In the end, I don't really like ether, but I definitely prefer a game more rooted in a balanced framework than a volatile and unpredictable yet unbalanced system.

I don't know if it's because it's late and I'm just tired, but if feel like you mentioned a lot in there that I didn't even mention. Plus, I didn't even know about Magic till I was maybe around....14? Either way, I knew about way after Yugioh. But still, it's all opinionated, so oh well. And maybe I just feel the way I do because I never got into magic, but I don't really care enough to figure out the answer to that question

That's cool. I kinda expanded on the differences for the benefit of the thread as a whole so it did really get off track, but I've had recent contact with both in varying degrees so I think I have a decent handle on everything.

I've been playing now for just over a year, so I can hopefully answer any questions. I wasn't sure exactly what you meant by resources though.

To start off, the into decks are pretty good to start off as you have a ready made deck that can work quite well to get you used to it. Then when you want to start building your own, deck builder boxes are really helpful for giving you core cards to work around.

Gatherer is a useful resource to look up cards, see the rulings on them ect.

You can also get magic on steam, which has a decent tutorial and that would get you used to the 'upkeep->1st main phase->combat->2nd main phase->end step' format. You might not need that though if you've got people to play with who can explain it better to you.

Are you planning on going into Tournaments and stuff or just playing casually with friends? Is there a place close to you that you can go play?

My mate from uni is a big player, competes in a lot of London tournaments and won a few, and he's also written a few articles for a Magic site. I'll text em quick, sure there are beginners guides on there, can't remember the name of the place though.

EDIT: So he told me that the best place to see some articles on beginning, the best place is the Magic site itself. Type in Daily MTG to find it and then search some of the articles there.
He also recommended once you know the rules and such to buy an event deck which is the best way to get into it, but I suppose you have the cards covered.

I don't know if it was already linked because I am too lazy to read posts, but this can help.
