So I'm meeting an old friend tomorrow and he said he introduce me to Magic (really I just want to meet up with him, I don't care for Magic) Now the only card game I play physically is Yu Gi Oh (I would play online but for some odd reason I enjoy playing for real better). Everyone at my collage plays Magic all the time (there are people who play Yu Gi Oh but Magic dominates the population), what do you guys think? What game is better? Magic or Yu Gi Oh? I say Yu Gi Oh (I've seen Magic played, it just doesn't appeal to me)

Alright. Objectively speaking, MTG is a better game. Now, what I mean by this is, it's got better card art, it's more carefully balanced, the mechanisms are more open to creativity, the lore is genuinely interesting and stands on its own outside of the game and the cards are standard sized. Those reasons are also pretty much why it's more popular than the shameless Konami knockoff. But let's put this in perspective for a bit. The aforementioned stuff does not mean that it's more fun, or that the community is all that much better, or that you should like it, or that people haven't been killed over MTG cards.

Fact is, I think all TCGs are pretty terrible since they're a pure money pit and they are addictive as crack for some people, a pretty bad combination. Still, just how I feel about it as someone who prefers to create in their freetime rather than consume.

At the end of the day, I don't like MTG because it took a lot of my friends away from me. I used to be able to have normal conversations with a lot of these people about video games, the weather, classes, random things that popped into their heads. No longer. Free time is Magic time. Chit chat is Magic chat. I don't like YGO because I've never met a good person who plays it and the show that it was based on was terribad in all ways.

I knew this would come up. I don't count online people because I don't consider interacting online equivalent to a meeting. So I've never met any of you. Let that much be clear.

I honestly know where you're coming from.
Mostly everyone at my University plays it, they never just want to talk, I can't make any "real friends" because all the time they just want to play ****ing Magic, like I said before there are people who play Yu Gi Oh there and they do agree to play with me but than when I say "alright I'm done" they just move onto Magic, its stupid. And I'm not the type of person who goes like "OH MY ****ING GOD I HAVE TO PLAY YU GI OH ALL THE TIME!" I only play it if someone is up to it or if I'm up to it.
Thankfully I'm with my best friend from high school still and I'm still in contact with other friends from high school, its not that I don't want to meet new people, I really do, but its more of "I can't". Beh that's off subject though, Yu Gi Oh VS Magic, Yu Gi Oh wins in my opinion.
And the show is kind of a guilty pleasure to me, Season 0 (a much much darker side of Yu Gi Oh), the Japanese dub (same thing as the US version but they removed stupid things 4kids censored like guns) hell I for some odd reason enjoy the 4kids dub, but only for Pegasus's voice and Kiaba and just how stupid it is overall, its like Kingdom Hearts to me, it overall is just stupid, but god dammit I love it!

I'm glad you clarified that. I would have assumed that you were lying if you hadn't added that sentence to your post.

Really? I think the worst thing about them is when they shit up my anime cons with their presence.

As one of the biggest YGO nerds on this site, I enjoy both the card game and all the series' of the anime unironically. I understand, however, the issues some people have with it.
But YGO was as big a part of my childhood as Pokemon was, so I will side with it every time.
PS; If anyone wants to have a go against me on DuelingNetwork, I run Crystal Beasts.

Also I am a huge fail at Magic. I have some cards, given to me by my sister, but I just never got into it.

and boy i just love how you guys hate on homestucks like i'm not even here.

You do realize that Homestuck is one of my favorite webcomics, right?

YGO was a huge part of my childhood and continues to be something I enjoy (thuogh admittedly I don't keep up with it at all and don't have any cards anymore.) I also know nothing about Magic so YGO of course

I did not know that, no. Although I was mostly talking to the other two.

I just get a little protective of it since people have a tendency to sh*t on it.

Well, now you know. Though, I still find almost all fandoms incredibly grating as I've mentioned in the past.

It happens. A few people can ruin it for everyone else.

That's why I hate Homesuckers too. The reason why I hate Homesuck itself is how most people who get into it seem to stop being into anything else. I feel like that's the reason why Homesuckers shit up so many cons. If weren't for a tiny minority of the fandom like you and that one girl at Matsuricon this year, I'd put all my resources (68 cents and some lint) toward getting that hellspawn of a webcomic off the internet for good.

But if you're a fan of something, doesn't that make you a part of the fandom? Whether or not you participate in it is another thing entirely, but as far as I'm concerned, "a fan" is the same as "part of the fandom."

The only reason why I dislike it is because it's not relevant to the convention and as such is a waste of a lot of space. A lot of the Homestuck people at conventions aren't really there for the actual subject of the con. They just wanna play dress up and hang out with other people that play the same dress up game as them. But that dress up game that they're playing is in no way related to animu or manga or being a con going weeb in general. Even the My Little Pony people decided to just make their own convention so they wouldn't shit up other peoples'. I think that was rather considerate of them and shows a lot of genuine love for their chosen interest, whereas people who just show up to other people's cons are lazy and wasting everyone's time. Not least of all, their own.

Fan is short for fanatic. Fanatics are characterized by taking something to excess. So I feel as though liking something doesn't make you a fan. It's how invested into it that makes you a fan. I don't consider myself a fan of many things at all. Even most of my favorite things, I can't really be a fan of, because I like them in a much cooler and less passionate way than a fan would.

Secondarily, I like to distinguish fan base from fandom just for me. Fan base would classify a more or less loose confederation of independent people who all like one thing a lot. A fandom is a vapid echo chamber where people join into a tempestuous swarm of others in their search for validation and commonality. I know no one else uses them this way, but it was only just a side note to begin with.
