Ok, so I've been thinking about this for a while, and I just can't find an answer. In KHII, they changed the magic system that you would get it after beating a boss or something, that I can understand. What I don't understand is how they did it in the first KH. How can you find magic inside a box like Hook's ship? Or how do you get it as a prize for beating on of Olympus's cups? Does anyone understand this, because I just can't find an answer

    Magic Spell Locations:

    • Fire: Defeat the Guard Armor in Traverse Town.
    • Fira: Defeat Jafar (Genie) in Agrabah.
    • Firaga: Seal Hollow Bastion's Keyhole.
    • Blizzard: Collect Claw Marks evidence in Wonderland or seal Wonderland's Keyhole.
    • Blizzara: Defeat Jafar in Agrabah.
    • Blizzaga: Defeat Behemoth in the Hades Cup.
    • Thunder: Complete Barrel Challenge in Olympus Coliseum.
    • Thundara: Defeat Ursula (Second Battle) in Atlantica.
    • Thundaga: Defeat Cerberus in the Hades Cup.
    • Cure: Defeat Clayton in Deep Jungle.
    • Cura: Obtained on Ship Deck in Neverland. (Pretty sure you receive it right before you fight Captain Hook)
    • Curaga: Talk to Aerith in the Library three times in Hollow Bastion.
    • Gravity: Win Phil Cup.
    • Gravira: Seal Halloween Town's Keyhole.
    • Graviga: Defeat Hades in the Hades Cup.
    • Stop: Defeat Parasite Cage (Second Battle) in Monstro.
    • Stopra: Complete Pooh's Swing minigame.
    • Stopga: Defeat Phantom in Neverland.
    • Aero: Defeat Opposite Armor in Traverse Town.
    • Aerora: Use Yellow Trinity in the Ship's Hold in Neverland.
    • Aeroga: Rescue all 99 Dalmations.
Edit: Oh haha wow, I thought you were asking the locations. Either way though I'm unsure... it's a video game. Sometimes they are connected to events/people; for example, in FFVII, (if memory serves correctly) Aerith/Aeris is a White Mage. She is the one that gives you Curaga, so we could possibly assume she taught it to Sora.

I don't really understand your question/I don't understand why you don't understand. Kingdom Hearts is a video game after all, maybe at the time, the developers didn't think to set the magic as a level up or getting it after you've beaten a boss. They set it so you'd get it for beating a cup or finding it in a treasure because maybe they didn't think of other options at the time.

but, I just don't understand. How do you find magic inside a chest? I know it was just put like that, but how can you open a chest and find a spell? I mean, what would that actually be like? It just doesn't make sense to me

I think I understand what you're saying. Correct me if I'm wrong, though.

You think that, even though it's a video game, it's not realistic to just find a magic spell in a treasure chest? Also, you find it weird how Sora just instantly knows how to use a spell when he finds / discovers a new spell?

    Is that what you're saying?

Okay, now I understand your question. I've thought of 2 explanations.

1: Loophole, just because thats what seemed like a good way to earn it.

2: The spells you get are written spells that have to be chanted(why Sora yells, "FIRE!" a bazillion times when you cast fira). Donald could then teach the spells to Sora.

It's just a video game mechanic. Like why are you able to change your abilities at will? In real life it would be like saying "I can play the piano, but only if I forget how to do algebra for a bit"

There are some things that are supposed to be somewhat realistic (hey, we need a ship to travel in outer space) but there are others that are simply to make it enjoyable as a game.

if you ask me it's a plothole, I just don't see how you can make that work, no matter how you look at it. I can understand them using the Pirate shipe to travel, but magic in a box? Nope

It's the same as in many dungeon RPGs. Suppose you find the villain at end of a dungeon filled with traps and it's obvious that he didn't set them. He had to get through all the traps too, so why aren't they all undone? Or why does shooting yourself in the head in Persona 3 allow you to summon a demonic personification of your innermost feelings and desires? And, back to Kingdom Hearts, why does it make sense that you can only have three party members at any given time? Why does it make sense that chests would be scattered in a more or less random fashion around the worlds in the first place? It's just an Acceptable Break from Reality. If you want a realistic answer, they probably found instructions on how to use the spell and "Found instructions for Fire magic" doesn't sound very good, especially when you're a part of the audience to which Kingdom Hearts is directed.

suspension of disbelief works great in the game, but I just don't understand, no matter how many times someone would try to put something like This^, finding a spell in a game doesn't seem to make sense. And actually, I haven't played Persona 3, but that almost sounds like the Dying Will Bullet in Reborn!

Well again, if you want a realistic answer, they probably just found instructions and "Found: Magic" just looks better in a dialogue box. Besides, how did Donald give Sora Dodge Roll? Wouldn't that mean that Donald used to be able to dodge roll, but now can't because he gave away the ability?

It's just a game thing. I suppose I also wandered how some managed to give Sora a keychain as they can't wield one (unless the keychain is different).

My guess is maybe he just found the knowledge in the chest, but by any case this game is by far incredible unrealistic and so finding a spell in a chest is just part of that- they needed places to put them. How is it any different to randomly learning it after a boss fight, it's just the way the game works.

Well... I can't speak too much for KH1
but I think in KH2 he is remembering the magic he forgot from the first game...

as for finding the magic in the chest in KH1...
well... the entire concept of KH is based on magic and awesomeness right?
Maybe there is a way to actually store knowledge in treasure chests?
I mean, the same could be said for the high jump ability inside monstro.
Suddenly he opens a chest and starts jumping higher?
To be honest... I'm not even sure the chests themselves are canon (other than plot ones in Neverland XD). I mean... yeah Sora has a keyblade that can open things.
But what would stop other people from opening them? Or moving them?
Why are the chests even there? Who put them there?
    Who left items inside? etc
    I think it's purely a gameplay mechanic.
Canonically, I don't think the chests are actually even there completely.

actually, there's also the ablities in chest and giving them away that I don't get either, but that's getting off topic from this one.
Maybe they just didn't make it right for me, because most of the game I can go with, but this, I just can't get

I don't really think there is anything that can properly explain it, there are just some things that we can't explain in these games. If I'm to be honest, when do you find a magic spell in a chest? I don't remember a single occasion in KH1 where this happens.

As for getting it after a boss battle, it could just be something learnt from the battle. However, it could just symbolise Sora improving his magic as he keeps fighting or it's just something that you don't think too deeply about.

Well, umm, In the Final Fantasy Cyrstal Chronicals you can find magic in chests, but that I can go with just because there isn't too much stuff in that game. Well there is, just not too much that you usually find in chests

Gameplay wise it is so as to expand how you gain new stuff. It's more likely that Sora was able to learn the spells by witnessing the bosses or by something in the chests. Or it could be magic that he learns magic.

You really need to just take a deep breath and remind you that this is a video game forged by the minds of Disney and Square Enix. There's no real point worrying about and overthinking the things that are so trivial as this. Honetly, there is no reason for "why" other than that that's what the game designers decided they wanted. It's a minor detail, and really, if doesn't do anything to saturate the gameplay, so why bother fretting?

It's just basic game knowledge, really.
I mean, how does Sora "lock" the keyholes with the Keyblade?

Also, Goofy gave Sora Dodge Roll. Donald gave him Fire.
