ok i know that Limewire is very popular and i do use it for music. but is it illegal downloading or file sharing? I know there's a topic similiar to this already but im talk specifically about the software, Limewire.

It in itself (i.e. having a copy on your computer isn't) but most of what you do with it is. As it is peer to peer software any file can be shared with anyone in the world, meaning that a law somewhere is bound to be broken (mainly copyright laws).

I'm not even sure talking about it is allowed on the site =/

"Technically" it should be piracy but milions of people use it and it is the fastest program for file sharing

they have a site and everything, it seems to be legal, yet piracy is involved.... man. this reminds me of Napster when it was illegal.

Eh, in some ways the downloading bit is considered illegal. File sharing, however, I don't know. Downloading a file off of someone's computer is something I never really thought of until a few years ago when I learned about limewire.

I myself don't use Limewire, it's full of virus' and it can get bad on your comp if you aren't careful about what you download.

I for one am careful of what I download in Limewire.

Technically it'd be illegal. Since Kazaa faced the same ****.

Well, I'll say that for File Sharing...it might not be. But I'm positive I am wrong. If you do not have the CD, movie, etc. It is illegal to have it. The only way to have is for backup if you OWN the movie, cd, etc.

Limewire is only illegal depending on what you're downloading from it. It's Peer to Peer, so if you're downloading some photo of someone and their Grandmother you're not going to get nailed for it.

However if you're downloading anything copyrighted that you didn't pay for (namely, music) it is illegal. Whatever is on your hard drive goes onto Limewire and people download those files.

Let's say you bought... Oh, let's say a Fergie CD and ripped it onto your computer. All of those music files will go into Limewire and others will be able to download them.

So, technically, someone had to pay for along the line, but if you're not paying it's most likely illegal.

I only use it for downloading songs because I don't want to spend money on iTunes. That's not considered illegal, but when you start downloading dangerous files it can get illegal. Another thing is that people have been getting Limewire Pro for free, THROUGH LIMEWIRE !! So I can imagine that that's illegal.

no, limewire is not illegal....wat people do with it is illegal....wen you first download the program the website even says "this program could be used to download copyrighted music" and then they ask you if you would use this program for such things....if you say yes, it doesnt let you download it.

so, no, the program is just for file sharing, but mostly, people (myself included) use it illegaly. but it is not illegal to download un-copyrighted files via limewire.

kazaa and limewire killed my comp. then we brought it back to life by deleting it from our harddrive and deleting the 12 highly dangerous virus' it gave us.

It almost reminds of the Napster debacle a few years ago. Everyone was using it and then it became illegal to use. (I found it funny that one of the bands proposing this issue was Metallica, who had enough money from previous albums to be set for life. But that's another discussion.)

Much the same with Limewire/Frostwire, both are really the same thing. People use it to download music and whathaveyou. I could see it going the same way as Napster, Kazaa, and any other similar program. (I never used Kazaa since it was a breeding ground for viruses.)
