That's an exponentially more ridiculous claim for different reasons pending your definition and perception of the word "art."

Yeah like if you define "art" as "not a video game"

He has a point. Have you seen Beyond: Two Souls?

Though I'm in the video games can be art crowd, personally. Beyond is really terrible.

Not sure what that has to do with anything, but why don't you elaborate instead of just saying it sucks

Does this post serve any purpose other than bashing Beyond?

That would take time. Time I'd rather spend talking about a better game.
    ...Huh. Looking back I think I may have misread Digital's post a bit, cause my post sounded better in my head when I first read it before I responded to your's. Sooo... no? ^^;

Edit: Upon retrospect, the point I was making was he said "your definition and perception of the word "art." " David "Game Overs Are a Failure of the Gamer Designer" Cage is an overly pretencious Frenchman (as if there is any other kind am I right?) is a rather big supporter of video games being an art form... and then making "games" that are more like interactive movies with his latest game, Beyond, being the biggest offender to this. I don't consider Beyond a game, so I don't consider it a piece of video game art. Now games like Journey, that's art.

I thiiiiink you saw my story in game's post and Beyond was how you decided to show that games need gameplay over story? That's how I interpreted it.

Some people feel art gives things a greater meaning that doesn't exist, or makes it timeless. That's dumb. That's a dumb definition. But a lot of people perceive art in that way, as if it justifies their hobby to people who shit on it by referring to it as a waste of time. And heck, I'll give it to those people; a lot of the games they list are forms of expression on a deeper level than the standard Shooty McBangBang.... but so are some really great films. Moviebuffs don't sit around and talk about how much art is in their film. They're willing to pop in Gremlins on the same day as Citizen Kane and just enjoy their hobby. Bookworms don't do that either. We're the only community that (1) can't agree on a definition of art and (2) feels the need to justify what we do. Sometimes I think it's that we try too hard to not be a counter-culture, but other times I think we're just really elitist and pretentious and a lot of the sub-communities really don't prove that wrong...

So yeah, if you feel the need to try to think of that implied one way to say that video games aren't art, then go for it. But if we're talking about expression, then we can't just say "video games are art" because that means ALL video games are art. Not just the ones we accept. Meaning Lightning Returns' ending is art. Do we really want to try and elevate the trash when we increase the value of that word just so we can either be better somehow or, more likely, prove our worth to people who will never accept it anyway?

I prefer just pressing B to zandatsu and not giving a FUCK who see's it as a good use of time or money.

...Pretty much, as I just edited something similar into my last post. Basically, Beyond has too little "gameplay" to be considered a game in my opinion.

Man Cage is a crappy designer. I was watching Two Best Friends Play 'Beyond: Two Souls Best Friends' and I can't believe the LAZINESS in a certain part.

Rule one about art: Everybody is wrong about what it means. If you were asked a question about what art means and you say "everyone is right" that gets you an F.

Yeah... you're wrong. Firstly, people who try to justify and legitimize art aren't hobbyists by any contortion of reality or stretch of the imagination. They're people with degrees who dedicate their lives to studying, bullshitting about, or making art. Hobbyists and commercial artists usually just say something ranging from, "It's fun", to "It's money and I like it." So you've got your community upside down and backwards for one thing. Also, did you know that no one in history has been able to agree on a definition for art, least of all artists and art theorists? Yeah, a lot of art thinkers spend most of their time historically telling people what is and isn't art and defending it. That's why we even have shit like futurism, modernism, post-modernism, impressionism, etc. They're different interpretations of what Art with the capital A is. Secondly, Movie buffs and enthusiasts are some of the most pretentious and scornfully elitist folk on the planet. They subscribe to the New Yorker and talk about foreign films and do not fucking well watch Gremlins unless they're trying to make the case that it's great. They don't enjoy watching dumb shit because it's fun, they enjoy feeling like they are elevating something to an art form and feeling like they're better than other people. The movies as art debate is as much a thing as the video games as art debate just transpose it by year of inception and think about it. Anyhow, point is movie folk are the same if not worse than the vidya community on this issue. Books? Same fucking thing. Charles Dickens was considered low brow garbage (partly because he hated on the overclass so much) and the furthest thing from art during his time. Look at the fucker now, classic fucking literature. So yeah, you made a really ignorant argument there and I'm borderline offended by the fact that you seem like you think art can only ever be a hobby and is nearly valueless to the world.

Long story short, even Plato and Aristotle were arguing about what art was and everyone is constantly trying to justify themselves, you're only seeing this shit about vidyas because they're newer and opinions are so much more public nowadays than they ever before could be. Jeez.

I stopped reading here because that blatantly ignores how youtuber xxDarkVegeta6969xx has probably even made a video about how video games are art, or at the very least a profane comment on the matter. So if we're going to live in a fantasy land and ignore all the discussions, youtube videos, blog posts, blip videos, and forum discussions on the matter then there's no point in having this discussion or reading the rest.

That's not legitimizing art, that's saying vidyas are art. Different things, you ass.

The out of order timeline doesn't help. Let's be honest, the game would be a lot more forgivable if it was in chronological order, and we would care more about Jodie as a character as we'd get to see her grow as a person.
How come Jodie can beat up three guys (one with a baseball bat) when a few hours ago she (could) almost get raped by a guy in an alley and Aiden has to bust her out?
How does Aiden let Jodie see memories from objects? Dead people I get, but an object? That just smacks of lazy convenience.
Why is this world so full of jerks? Like ridiculously full of jerks. It's like Fist of the North Star levels of evil people who rape and murder, but sadly not as awesome because Jodie isn't making people explode.
You know a discussion is going in the right direction when people start insulting one another! :D

You know I'm an ass, this should come as no surprise. But now I'm offended because apparently self-educated people without degrees have no say.....? There's no subjective view on the legitimacy? Boy, you're right. I should sit back and let the scholars tell me what to do because I'm a workin' class foo'.
